when does this get good? I loved Planescape and Fallout, but oh man this doesn't have half of the atmosphere, writing, and originality that made those so good.

second game

once you get to the Nashkel Mines it steps up quite a bit. Once you get to the actual city of Baldur's Gate it steps up once again. The expansion pack Durlag's Tower and Werewolf Island are also wonderful

Baldur's Gate never had writing as good as Planescape or Fallout, if you are going into BG1 with that expectation it's going to be ruined.

Baldur's Gate 2 is where the writing actually takes off, the atmosphere gets way better, and the combat stops being "hard" and actually becomes difficult because you have to plan out your fights.

Never. Baldur's Gate 2 is the first and last good game Bioware ever made.

>> No.5825126

I prefered BG over BG2. In the second my character felt overwhelmingly powerful from the very start and it was difficult to gauge progress. I usually get about halfway through before giving up - usually after siding with/against Bhodi.
At least in thefirst you can playtest character ideas easily and actually tell if they're viable from the start.

Anon, virtually anything in BG is viable.

>I loved Planescape and Fallout
Black Isle games.
>Baldur's Gate
Bioware game.

You can't expect the same with different developers just because they share infinity engine or ruleset.

So play Mask of the Betrayer instead.

True, I remember some guy was doing runs of all the saga, solo and trying all clases with characters with all stats at 3 or the minimum possible. And he was succeeding.

The writing is the western equivalent of JRPG writing, i.e. dogshit aimed at teenagers with "lol humor" that can only be found funny by literal 12-year olds.

Icewind Dale beats the shit out of Baldur's Gate when it comes to the writing.

There's not too much humor in Baldur's Gate, I don't really get what you're talking about.

But the engagements seemed little more than a hack and slash fest.

Baldur's Gate is a low-level D&D campaign if you don't know what that is or what the appeal might be it's not surprising you don't like BG1. BG2 has a more videogame feel.

Durlag's Tower.

the game is OK on the whole but nowhere near as fun as importing your char from BG`1 to BG`2
