I just want to know how much money Valve bribed journos with to shill their mediocre game.

I wasn't surprised it was boring, since I played the leaked version a year before release. But I was surprised how much hype it got.

>> No.5812745

Half life 2 had the worst fucking weapons roster the first game had such great and imaginative guns and 2 also had the most boring enemies, combine I can forgive cause that replaces the soldiers, but the fucking antlions were boring and gay as hell. The only thing half life 2 did well was make me appreciate the first game more

Incorrect. People were wanking off to Havok ragdolls way before Half-Life 2 in Max Payne 2 and Unreal Tournament 2003. The big deal that Valve made about Half-Life 2 was that every material type like wood and concrete were assigned values in weight, friction, and buoyancy. It's right on the game's box.

Yeah, and those games were never hyped or remembered the same way as HL2. The hype train for HL2 was fucking huge back then, and drowned out lots of other for games for YEARS before HL2 even came out.

>> No.5812840

>>5812707
HL2 was great when it first released, the physics and face animations were fantastic. But HL2 also had a bit too much updated technology to show off, which hurt it as a game. HL2 should still be appreciated for what it allowed other games to do, VtMB is still my favorite game and I'm still playing HL2 multiplayer mods.

Just good old fashioned vidya gore.

>>5812592
Half-Life 2 is ok, the level design just isn't as strong as in the first game, and there's less variety in enemy types.

>>5812724
It was the first time I had seen ragdoll physics, and I was pretty impressed by them, but I was also *greatly* disappointed that explosions didn't gib enemies anymore, I was hoping for some radical gore with the help of the physics engine but there's no such thing, the enemies just go flopping, which has some novelty, but not as much as gibs have.

>> No.5813550

>>5813429
>It was the first time I had seen ragdoll physics, and I was pretty impressed by them
Were ragdoll physics meant to be impressive? When I was a kid I thought they were goofy and lame, only done by developers who were too lazy to properly animate shit. Any time I heard someone praise them I assumed it was in an ironic "so bad it's good" kind of campy way. Was it genuinely seen as an impressive thing by some people?

There's a reason mustards HATE Goldeneye and that's because it completely explodes their entire mythology about Half-Life. Unlike others like Strife, they can't even say it was an obscure game.

That anon is right though. Despite the good physics, HL, both 1 & 2, really shine in the sections where youre trying to escape closed spaces in an apocalyptic setting. Taking it to the open world really makes the games lose some of its charm.
