I will assume that most people know about the mythical FPS Arcade game "The house of the dead" But my question is if any of you could share a forum, information about the development of this game.

Thank you very much for your help.

I know it was one of the first non-fighting games to use 3D motion capture. Except they felt the motion capture made the zombies move too much like normal people, so they had to tweak the mocap animations very slightly to make them look "off".

Sad this never got a proper home release. Recently played it at an arcade, was able to clear it with 5 credits. Hope to do better next time.

It has an internal switch that changes the blood color from red or green. Depending on which color is used, the look of the game's first boss with change.

It had a port on the Sega Saturn and a PC release, neither of which were even close to the standard of quality set by the arcade version. For whatever reason, the game hasn't gotten a port since, unlike House of the Dead 2 and onwards.

In fact, I thought it was widely accepted as being of poor quality, and the only reason that people want it is because there's basically no good options for playing an official home release of the game. I don't know how much of that is due to it being poorly made, or if it is just that the Saturn couldn't hold a candle to the power of the Model 2 hardware.

I reckon the conversion could've been a lot better. Compare out to other games at the time... A lot of wasted potential.
I remember Sega Saturn magazine really taking this up before it came out and saying it's looking ok for a mid development game. Then when it came out they were like, oh it still looks a mid development game. Sorry...

I always preferred#2 and played the crap out of the DC version

It's slightly more playable than the PC port, that's about it.

Thankfully, emulation of HotD has been great for years. The hard part is getting a light gun setup at home.

Just looked it up and read some about it. It was built with Virtua Cop as a base and inspired by Resident Evil and the movie 'Seven'. Never knew about it being influenced by Seven. Also compared to SNK's Beast Busters which came before it and then later Time Crisis.

I've only played the first one on Saturn. Is it that bad of a port? My friends and I loved it, but we had nothing to compare it to. The movie theater by me would get a HotD 2 machine at some point, but I don't think I ever saw the first one in the wild.

I mean obviously it couldn't, but that's not even the issue here. Virtua Cop 1+2, Dynamite Cop, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, etc all got amazing conversions with a little bit of compromise and elbow-grease. The devs were very vocal about the Saturn version of HotD being rushed out the door before it was ready.

Since I'm a huge Death Crimsom Sega Saturn and Death Crimsom OX fan I decided to look up Death Crimsom 2, but I didn't know that game was a full Resident Evil clone.

You guys should check that series out if you like hilariously campy awkward early 3D direction with decent light gun gameplay.

Yeah, it was one of my top desires. If you do ever get one, Suzo Happ used to sell (and still might) new replacement stickers for the pedestal, the ones with the Agent stats. I bought a set but wasn't able to bring myself to tear off the remnants of the old ones. They also sold new replacement gun shells.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the Eater stickers that are supposed to go on the guns. Oh well, maybe someone will make repros at some point.

Not like I'd turn down a cab of any game in those series, but those especially I'd enjoy.

I wouldn't be able to replace the art. It's slightly damaged, but so be it. It's a product of its time and adds to the charm. Reproduction stuff ruins it for me, I want it to be as original as possible. My main concern is there is some burn in on the screen. Any tips for replacing that?

I mostly go the PCB in a candy cab route, but some dedicated lightgun games were worth getting. I have HotD, Lost World (the standup cab, not the huge sitdown one), and Area 51 Site 4. They're fun to have, but to be honest they take up a lot of space and no matter how awesome they are at first, they will inevitably go for long periods of time without use. I also picked up a Virtua Cop 2 board which is a direct drop in with a HotD cab, so at least I can use that for more than one game.

Suzo Happ is an actual arcade dealer, so they could well have been official decals. Either way I never put them on. As for screenburn, not much you can do beyond getting a new monitor or finding a compatible, gun-free tube and doing a tube swap. Mine had some Insert Coin turn-in, which definitely isn't ideal, but I've learned to live with it.

What isn't fine, as you can tell just by looking, are the graphics. The arcade itself isn't a great looking game, but the Saturn version appears to have 1/2 the texture resolution. It is a pixelated mess.
