Explain what's so great about Nights Into Dreams's gameplay without using graphics, the state of contemporary titles on the Saturn, or "you had to be there".

>> No.5805420

The graphics, and it's especially good compared to the state of contemporary titles on the Saturn. You had to be there really.

It's been explained a million times, literally go read any review of it.

>but I disagree
Great, your opinion really isn't that relevant, many many people love it and you're free not to

Pretty much this. The graphics blew you away if you saw it in motion at launch. Just breathtaking, and it makes the gameplay so compelling.

Perfect score attack game. With the exception of the acrobatic time exploit, high level play of NiGHTS looks cool and stylish, not riddled with glitching and exploiting the system.

NiGHTS is "flying Sonic", the same feeling of high-speed freedom now in the air. Excellent music with several different variations per stage.

The music and the system that altered the music is still amazing.

The score attack thing is confusing in this day and age of tutorials, but it works great since it makes it easier to experience the game multiple times, also, there's nothing wrong with a game that's more an experience than pure graphics/gameplay.

A penalty for not getting back to the tower fast enough. Although you can grab some chips as the kids for a shortcut to bonus time on the first lap.

It's smooth.
I have a few issues with the hyper-zoomed in camera (that just disguises the fact that the Saturn can't draw that much shit on screen), but otherwise, you're zipping around in 360 degrees through these crazy stages trying to keep your perfect line through the level and rack up points.
I do wish the bosses were less... annoying. Nothing like a perfect run killed because of some dumb bullshit on the boss giving you a low multiplier.

Not mentioning graphics is retarded too, because the game is pretty.
It's pretty for a Saturn game, but it's also pretty for a 1996 3D console game in general. Cool lighting effects, funky looking environments, and the game keeps a reasonable framerate (and just gives up on continuing to draw instead of dropping frames).

>>5805796
>By the way what was the point of playing as the kids?
It's how you get to walk around the levels in 3D, as kinda shitty as it is. Just being able to muck about and walk around in three dimensions was a selling point.

took a creative risk & development of their "killer app"

i was completely floored playing this as a child @ the retail demo kiosk

you have no heart if you can't play this game to the final boss at least - its wonderful

few gaming systems invoke true happiness for me like the saturn did - i will never resell.

didnt pick up a saturn until adulthood +
researching & verifying the plethora of great shootemups available on the system

Why don't you just play the game in 16:9? It supports it and looks great on a CRT or even a modern widescreen screen via an emulator.

Analog controls literally had to be patched in after steam users exposed the fact that it didn't ship with analog movement of any kind. It feels markedly different to the Saturn game and movement isn't as weighty or smooth feeling.

There's thousands of hours of youtube videos on it, so really there's nothing especially enriching you could find here than elsewhere. Pirate it and play it yourself, if you have first world internet you could have downloaded it and been playing it right now in a fraction of the space between your two posts.

I like the music. The locales are pretty imaginative. The game controls very nice with the analog dome fitting the teme of an aerial acrobat within a dream. The game doesn't overstay its welcome and has a scoring system to encourage scoring runs or speeding through, however the player chooses to play. The two kids have slight variations on stages, which gives a bit of variety. In the end, like most Sega games, most may not like them, but I think they are pretty cool.

It's by Sonic Team, so it is automatically defended by a horde of autists despite being a painfully mediocre game.

The score attack concept is fun, but it falls apart when you realize all you have to do is to fly over the goalpost to do another loop for more scores.

This is the entire point. There's a reason everything gets put back when you loop around again.

A lot of people did.

Sega has a bad habit of fucking this up.
Crazy Taxi on Steam needs a separate patch for analog control too.

I like the Wii version quite a bit, mostly because all of the new sub-games retain the scoring system, which adds some good replay value. However, I think the base "Chase Mission" levels are a lot weaker than the Saturn NiGHTS. The "line" for keeping the link chain going is a lot more straightforwards and simple.

Rodea on Wii is good fun too, although the last boss is currently making me want to fucking kill myself.
