do we know who. or have any leads?

Chinese bootlegging back then was cashing in on the popularity of Super Mario Bros., and falsifying their own sequels by taking various random games and doing sprite swaps and altered title screens.
There's like 20+ Super Mario Bros bootlegs on the NES/Famicom to my recollection.

The 7 was because it was the 7th such Super Mario Bros game, no clue if it was a single bootlegging group or if there were many competing.
