5791154 No.5791154 [Reply] [Original]

Whole adventure set in Egypt makes a lot of sense - no more random jumps all around the world. There's less gunfight and much more exploration. Non-linear levels requiring backtracking and puzzle often based on Egyptian mythology give an unforgettable experience.

CORE Tomb Raider games in general are comfy as all hell. The one I legitimately don't like is TR5.
I don't even hate AoD come to think of it, because you can tell there is a really good game trying to get out and I respect CORE for what they were trying to do.

>especially anniversary, which i considered the best video game remake to date

Ewww really? I mark it as almost as bad as Twin Snakes, especially the QTE bits. Underworld is the only non retro one I thought did justice to the franchise.

>> No.5791570

>>5791154
Based. Also really nice graphically especially on dreamcast. I don't think it ever received the appreciation it deserves, possibly due in part to an abundance of great games around 1999/2000, and some started to take the Tomb Raider series for granted. An underrated game for sure.

Gee anon, it's like they literally decided to make the last Tomb Raider and go out in a bang... it's been 20 years, nigger. The fact you are somehow unaware of it, yet still play Core-era TRs is just fucking insulting.

>> No.5791745

Anniversary was everything wrong with modern remakes of old titles.
And like the other anon said, Underworld is so far the only TR not made by Core that got it all right, even if the plot is just plain annoying bullshit drama

Tomb Raider peaked with the Nude Raider mod.

With that said, however:
>play original TR
>run against a wall
>Lara stops herself with her hands
>technology.jpeg
>play Anniversary
>run against a wall
>Lara doesn't stop herself, the running animation just keeps looping like I'm playing Q3

It's little details like this that made the original TR so good that are completely lacking in the CR games.

Nigga, Anni is literally TR1 stripped of anything even resembling complexity, tucked-in QTEs and it's actively dumbing down everything from the original. The only bits of Anni that are good are the timed puzzles, but it's undermined by the fact most of the moves are automated anyway, so you can't fucking fail them, unless you have cerebral palsy

Original anon here and for me what went wrong was not enough time to develop those. Not in terms of crunch-time put into production (but this also was a problem, as they've did a rush job for both Anni and Underworld), but simply time spend with the series as such. Crystal Dynamics didn't really grasp what the fuck they should be doing until Underworld and when they finally did...
... reboot happend, while in the same time most of the "experienced" staff got fired from the company.
As for each game separately, first of all - not retro. Then:
>Legend
Too short, too simplified, too much (dull) combat, QTEs. I always give it a pass simply because I consider it to be a tech demo under new company
>Anniversary
How to NOT make a remake: 101. They just fucked up EVERYTHING there was to fuck up, streamlining levels, putting retarded boss fights (T-Rex was probably the worst offender) and fucking up Lara herself. The only non-bad part was acrobatics in Greece, but they are undermined by problematic controls
>Underworld
Camera is off the hook. Levels are either great (Thailand, Mexico) or dog-shit bad, with nothing in-between.

She drops down about waist deep, then begins to sink slowly, and eventually disappears under the surface completely, at which point her oxygen bar appears, as if she were diving. If it runs out, she drowns. You can extricate her, if you manage to find solid ground in time, but she cannot swim in the muck, it's too heavy. She can only walk around slowly at the floor, and if you can't find a shallow spot where she could plop her head out to catch her breath, she's kill.

> try to pretend these games aren't as janky and outdated as Syphon Filter

Bullshit, SF is far from being janky,it had some cool auto aiming mechanics for dynamic combat and manual aiming as well.

It had a few of technology moments, destructible and interactive environment and nice secrets that required you to spot and climb stuff.

That game hold up even today and if by outdated you mean there are games that improved on mechanics earlier 3D games were only starting to touch on, then yes but even then, SF is still great and have better stealth than many modern games despite being just as adequate a shooter and an action game.

Controls are also far from being janky even by today standards, I am pretty sure more people had issues playing GTA IV than they would have playing SF.

I could go on like this but I will just outline the main points of my arguments bellow.

1 Basically you just fucking retarded.
2 See the point above

Also, in case of TR, tank controls was part of the puzzle and the thing that allowed to take those long jumps from sprint confidently or those back/sideways jumps on slopped segments.

The whole game just very well thought out. Distance between jumps and traps and switches is measured carefully and length of the steps Lara take is part of the puzzle.

Same shit in Abe's Exodus/Odyssey, in Odyssey you can run the last level with your eyes closed just because you know how large a step Abe gonna take or where he jumps and lands.

The whole tank control in TR games is what allowed for precise navigation across all those puzzles and platforms.

See point one and two

A partial fix was posted ITT already. There are attempt to fix it more, and include unused animations and whatnot, but that is all WIP by very few people.

There's a patch that improves the controls and restores graphical features missing from the PS2 version, it's what I used when I played through it recently.

https://sites.google.com/site/tombraideraoddecompiling/modifications/executable-mods/fixed-controls

The biggest change is that it fixes the bug where Lara has to walk before she can run. It also increases her run speed, fixes the bug where she can't use any of her moves on stairs, restores some moves that were inexplicably cut from the PC port (like the ability to turn around in place or turn 180 degrees while running) and adds some new moves (like the ability to do quick 90 degree turns, which is something I wish could be patched into the PS1 era games)

I agree with you dude. The remake is easier to play. Sorry dudes but I never got good at oldschool Womb Raider, and I'm a 32 year old boomer. Though that was mostly because my mom confiscated the game from me because she was offended by Lara Croft's big tits on the cover.

Anyway, I can't get into the older games today, they're awkward to play now. Anniversary and that game just before it when Lara first came to the 360 gen, those were dope, fuck the other boomers.

You basically describe the arc of Tomb Raider and why it was doomed to die the horrible death it did. The first game is very much a puzzle-platformer and makes no bones about it. The core gameplay is surviving and figuring out the puzzles. The controls seem stiff and odd, but it's because of the way the platforming is designed. If the main character had been some generic dude it probably would have stayed the same but also obscure.

But because Lara was an icon due to marketing about how thrilling it was to play a hot busty Indiana Jones type the game got a lot of attention. But most people don't actually like the kind of game the original Tomb Raider was going for. So they make it less puzzle focused and more action trying to entice new players into the series. By the time they got to the remake they made it as much like an action game as possible and added a bunch of quicktime events.

It was a notable feature, but hardly integral to the overall experience. It makes sense to leave it out if it made no sense for the story but they should have made the tutorial level optional anyways. They also should have made the rest of the game better overall but we're already into dreamland.

>>5813420
The change in game content comes from the simple fact Core had to churm up another of those in 8 months, on yearly basis, four years in a row, while having (at the peak) half the manpower they needed.
So they were cutting corners, because they literally had to.

It always annoys me when people overthink the whole "why TR was dropping in quality", when it's a common fucking knowledge since the tail end of the 00s how fucking horrible it was to actually make those games for the various teams behind it.

>>5813657
>haha you're retarded don't you know it's supposed to be shit
>fuck off and actually read the thread before responding
The sheer level of irony of your post is pretty much lethal.
The point was this game was a send-off, you complete imbecile. They've killed Lara in it on the purpose of finally being free from making more of those games.
And yet here you are, illiterate, dense and aggressive about it.

>The change in game content comes from the simple fact Core had to churm up another of those in 8 months, on yearly basis, four years in a row

While that's also true, the change in focus still doomed the series even if they had had the time and manpower.

>> No.5817835

>>5816227
No it didn't. What happend was the original team quitting after TR2, doesn't mean every game was made by different people. And some of them came back later, too. In fact, people who were "Team B" working on TR2 were the people who made TR3, 4 and 5, while also observing first and second hand what working on those games does to you and your personal life. Like when you spend 18 hours/day in a house rented for offices and then sleep on your desk, so you won't waste time on commuting. All becauseof a contract signed before even the first game was made, perpetually keeping the series as "paid for commission" state, where they weren't given a single penny until the game was finished and then given just a shitty percentage of profit. Not sales, profit. Which we all know how can be easily manipulated.

>>5816468
The change of focus wouldn't fucking happen if they had the time and manpower, because they could still be toying around with puzzles and levels, aka what they were wanting to do with TR2. Guess what didn't happen, since they had 8 months to make it. Or rather 7, since they first were trying to baby-sit Gard through the process, so he would stick with the team. Guess what also failed.
Jesus, this is all open, common knowledge for years at this point. And from all places, /vr/ should be one of the most informed about this shit. I mean my fucking nephew, who is barely of legal age, knows all about this thanks to the 20th anniversary extensive interviews, despite, you know, being younger than the series.

And that assumption is based on... what exactly? I mean let's make a short mental check:
1) Gard is still in

4) ...
5) somehow shitty city raider areas full of combat still happen

Yeah because everything you described comes down to how well the game would have been put together, not design choices like urban environments and more action. With more manpower and time it would have been a better version of what we got but it still would have been the same basic shit.

Installed and played through The Lost Artifact today. I only had played the first maps demo before.
The whole thing took some 8 hours with all reloads and secrets searching.

Maps were pretty interesting and cool. Scotland was super comfy and the secret areas were worth looking for. The sword wielding scots and rusty submarine were awesome to find.

The lack of /any/ story telling at all was odd. Yeah you could follow the plot somewhat, but it gets confusing towards the end.

Plot summary how I remember it
>Lara breaks into private property, kills guards and dogs, while searching for artifact.
>artifact is gone already, only radioactive goo that it makes is left behind

>In London Lara heads to the metro construction area, slaughtering workers and guards on her way to find goo spewing artifact.
>walks on, and later swims in middle of radioactive cancer goo
>sees once again human experiments, this time, cancer goo is used on humans to turn them into fish-people things?
>proceed to stuff the radioactive, cancer goo artifact in her swimsuit

>time to visit zoo in middle of night and murder all the animals
>the fuck Lara?

>gets bad trip from all the cancer goo and proceeds to lay on a beach
>has lovecraft tier hallucination dream where she fights tribals and her dead nemesis in another dimension
>wakes up to random old guy landing hot air balloon on the beach.
>The End

I need to try Revelation again, for some reason I stopped playing during the first map.

How's Chronicles compared to T1,2 and 3?
And do I miss anything if I skip AoD?
