>> No.5785190

>>5785164
I don't mind the cord, but it bothers me that if the hard plastic to make it go upwards leaves marks on the cord itself. I would rather use it as God intended.

>>5785176
It wasn't that bad. I've been wondering something though. I only have one controller and this one controller, the joystick can move ever so slightly to each side, and by move I mean the thing spins on itself. I already opened the controller and inspected the joystick and it appears that the star-shaped plastic doesn't exactly match the spaces it goes in, making it have some free space to spin either left or right. Are all controllers like this? It's specially annoying when playing Jet Grind Radio and trying to make the graffiti as far as possible.
I probably butchered this fucking post. I'm not native English and I feel my fucking brain melting. Sorry.

It's not good, it's an over-engineered gimmick. You can't use every button without completely shifting your hands, and your hands are too close together with the default grip. They were clearly focused more on how the controller looked compared rather than how it actually felt. This is how you make a proper n64 controller, and this is why controllers and control schemes are the only thing vidya related that can truly age.

That controller is a goddamn nightmare for all the Naomi fighting game ports on the system. I got actual, throbbing blisters from the jagged corners on that thing's pad playing CvS. On that note it's a shame that game was so overshadowed by the sequel. The music and matte 2D artwork for the stages were cooler, and the pre-set ratio system was a neat idea if not horribly implemented.

Then you must never have played your N64, because your complaints about its controller and how it actually worked out don't add up. He is right, the earliest memory i have of someone complaining about "muh whats with the n64 controller, me head can´t understand" is some younger youtuber making jokes, no one sperged about it back then, i collected several magazines and not a single comment about it for the whole generation, even ones that featured a lot of banter never shat on the controller, it wasn´t a thing until youtube retro reviewers came along to masturbate each other and repeat the same tired jokes and low tier opinions you are parroting.

>> No.5785762

Funny, because your hands are cramped closer together with the standard grip on the 64.
>shitty D-pad

Because they aren't handles. They weren't handles until the DS4. You hold pre-DS4 playstation controllers by floating it on your middle fingers.

>Funny, because your hands are cramped closer together with the standard grip on the 64.
I don't know when the last time you used an N64 pad was, but my fingers never touched with the N64 pad like what can happen when you're controlling both sticks on a Dualshock.
>It's fine.
Why settle for "fine" when you could have a good D-pad like what Nintendo and Sega made?
>Because they aren't handles. They weren't handles until the DS4. You hold pre-DS4 playstation controllers by floating it on your middle fingers.
They still get in the way. N64's handles point straight down which his how it should be.

>> No.5785813

>>5785802
If your thumbs are touching, they're positioned improperly. Either rest the ball of your thumb on the bottom left and bottom right of each stick, or the center of the pad on the center of the stick.
>Why settle for "fine" when you could have a good D-pad like what Nintendo and Sega made?
"good" like the n64's trash dpad, or the dreamcast's trash dpad? Or the gamecube's trash dpad? None of these companies have a particularly good track record with dpads outside of one standout example (snes/md 6 button). For gen 5 consoles, the playstation's dpad is solidly middle of the pack, thus "fine".
>They still get in the way
I assure you they don't if you're holding the controller properly. I've had this conversation so many times and when people aren't arguing in bad faith and actually try to hold it properly as instructed, they find it very comfortable.

Lately I've been looking at service manuals for late 90s/early 2000s Roland & Yamaha grooveboxes. Noticed at first glance the DC's specs on paper seem to make for a high end groovebox/music production tool along the lines of the Roland & Yamaha machines. 200 MHz SH family processor & 64 voice MIDI-capable Yamaha sound subsystem with dedicated ARM processor. I believe there is a MIDI interface cable but I think there is only one music creation Japan only release.

Yes and no. The GC version has tons of audio issues that a casual might not mind, but if you enjoy good sound and have a setup for it, all the extra content in the world can't make up for how much better the Dreamcast version sounds. The sound design in this game is downright amazing. And as cool as all the extra content is, it's not like the original is lacking in shit to do. People will try to make a point about the encounter rate being lower, but it honestly isn't lower to a point where it's easy to notice. I played the first dungeon of both versions back to back recently, and the Dreamcast version only stuck me with ONE more random battle than the GC version did. My biggest complaint is how much slower the load times are for the battles. I do miss the challenge of the extra content in the GC version, too. Some of those bounty battles were a fucking nightmare, and the longer you put them off, the stronger they get. I recall one I could only beat by spending an Aura of Valor.

Just finished disc 1 on the Dreamcast for the first time since the original release. DC didn't freeze once, which is pretty funny considering that almost 20 years ago, the very same Dreamcast copped an attitude during several load times and random battles. Looking forward to playing some more this weekend.

Pretty reliable if you get a model made in Japan and not China or Vietnam or whatever. Earlier models are better. Look on the decal on the bottom and you should see a little number in a circle. 0 or 1 are good models, I think. Avoid 2. My first Dreamcast was a brand new model 2 and it failed in 6 months. It's like...you know how games like the original Shenmue, MGS2--early games from when consoles were really going whole hog toward "photorealistic" realtime 3D--how they'd exaggerate certain features and confine the points of articulation only to what emphasized specific expressions, and created something that was both an attempt at photorealism and ultimately its own aesthetic? Shenmue 3 is like that, but with HD assets. It's sort of uncanny.

Pizza and drinks.... putting cd's into the dreamcast to play music thru the speakers. Messing with vmu games and trying to raise chao and experiences power stone 1 with friends. getting a vga box later and hooking it up so it was uber crisp and you could read the fonts in gauntlet legends clear as day and so you and friends would play that game for hours on end. Oh yeah it dying still hurts when I think about it. I have almost all my dreamcast goodies from years ago nicely packed up or proudly hooked up on display. Probably one of the only consoles dying that truely still bothers me to this day. Luckily there's alot of games to enjoy and explore (japan games still are alot of mystery to me for the most) and replay thru or beat or finally check goals off the list with . Vampire (Darkstalkers) Chronicles FMS

That's... actually a nice roster. Never have I seen a home console have so many games from one single third party company (only other one I can think of is the SNES having a bunch of Konami games on that console).

Too bad about PS2 god awful video quality though. Dreamcast with VGA was way sharper than anything PS2 could do. But because most people gamed on shitty small low market CRT televisions so everything looked fuzzy anyway, but looking back and with comparison games on Dreamcast just look better despite the weaker hardware.

>> No.5813770

>>5813757
Dreamcast looks sharper because it can frequently output a 640x480p image. The PS2 is stuck with crappier output not due to a lack of power but because it has trouble fitting a framebuffer that large into its 4 MB of VRAM.

BTW people really need to stop comparing the Japan PS2 version of DOA2 with the Dreamcast version. Itagaki said the Japan PS2 version is literally an alpha version that was forcibly sent to the disk presses by the publisher.

DOA2 Hardcore makes up for the lower resolution by having improved lighting, particle and weather effects over the Dreamcast version.

I didn't 1CC it my first time and never claimed I did. Zoomer get a massive hate boner every time they hear the term. The first time I played I just pressed A until I got into the gameplay and fucked around until I had a rough idea of how it worked. My objective was testing the ODE so I just kept playing until it was over. Easy as fuck. I didn't even realize the grappling thing was a thing until well into the game. After that I did two "training" rounds and then 1CCd it. Not even proud of that. I died once and a better man, or me with a few more tries, wouldn't have.
I haven't tried the arrange mode or anything else. I was just playing on the defaults. arcade/normal/wherever. I'll give it a try at some point. I like the game, the mechnics, even the verboten anime girls. But the default settings are just too fucking easy.

>> No.5813938

A better comparison would be something like Silent Hill 2 vs Illbleed. I don't even think Illbleed looks better than Silent Hill 1. PS2 could output to component for crispy 480p or even 1080i on a couple of games.

Yeah both those are great, but like you said the DC is my favorite console mainly for the amazing arcade games. And I assume the "rpg" anon was talking about that everyone hates now is Shenmue. Maybe I'm just delusional, but I don't even think that's true. I think what people hate is it's association with Epic store now.

And while we're sort of on the subject, L.O.L. is a really good game if you're looking for the more laid back experience that RPGs provide. Time Stalkers got a lot of shit back in the day because a lot of journos and players didn't understand the concept of a roguelite, but I quite like it.

Ah. "grabbing" is the key. Even if you don't master manipulating what you grab you can still easily beat the game. For example, it locks your shots to the grabbed point on a boss letting you finish it in seconds. And once you learn how to swing shit around you literally mop the floor with that shit. Also, it seems holding something gives you a free hit against projectiles so just grabbing any random flying shit will keep you alive forever. That's about all I know. I've only played it a couple times.
