At least I actually made it to the final lap this time...

Also I seriously have never been able to do that last big drift properly. In pic it's especially fucked because I knew I was about to run out of time anyways, but usually I still end up drifting out into the grass and tapping the wall at the part where I should be straightening back out.

You should drive the Manual Hornet. Are you doing so? The only way to be really good at this game is to drive Manual. Drifts are much easier by using the gearbox. For instance, for the final turn in Dinosaur Canyon you should be going around 320km/h (that's about 198 mph if you're from burgerland) and from the outside of the turn, steer sharply inwards while letting go of the gas and quickly shift into 1st gear. This will cause you to start drifting immediately. Don't touch the gas and once you're going sideways, shift into 3rd and watch the speedometer. When you're going around 280/290km/h (again, that would be about 175mph) you can gradually start stepping on the gas, all the while watching that you're recovering traction adequately instead of skidding more towards the outside of the turn. You should never go slower than 275/280km/h (170mph) and you should be fine. By the way, proper performance in Dinosaur Canyon means 1st place by the end of the 2nd lap, even in the hardest setting. Daytona USA is a hell of a game. Good luck.

thats not what i meant
i was trying to point out how ridiculous that sounds

what im getting from the text is that you shift into first between 320 and 290 km/h which seems absolutely absurd

It’s all about 4th to 1st to 4th! You can go at least 170 through every turn in that course / don’t use the brake

Well fug, I don't think I would've ever figured that out, thanks anons. It sounds like I was jumping back on the gas way too soon, too (pretty much right after switching from 2 to 3). I agree though, this is such cool and unique game compared to everything else in the genre.

what's the best way to play this game outside of outright buying the damn cabinet? I'm apparently too retarded to get it working on a Saturn emulator and the Model 2 emulator I'm using maps the controls awkwardly and won't let me alter it (i.e. insists on both turning and acceleration being controlled by the left analog stick)

Anon pls, just follow this guide for standalone mednafen. You can't fuck it up.

Also the method listed in the video description here for "fixing" the DC versions controls for controllers is working good for me.

>if you play the game on an emulator, you can use a program called XInput Plus to address the issue. Just tweak "linearity" to around +0.25

Though I'm not using Xinput Plus, I'm using DS4Windows to apply the same solution and it works great.

whoa thanks so much for the linked video, this is the first time I've ever gotten a Saturn emulator to work without it constantly shitting itself to death. I think I've got everything working about right now, button mapping's admittedly a bit awkward on the DS4. the analog steering seems to kind of *stick* sometimes even after applying the dead zone fix--not sure if this is just me being shitty at Daytona and misunderstanding the drift mechanics though.

It's okay, I had to glue myself to Daytona 2 for hours (for arcade that is fucking long) before getting 1st. But man it felt so good.

It's a mixed bag. It plays well on a controller but runs at 20fps and has bad pop-in.
