I may be going full retard here but bear with me.

When I change the resolution in GZDoom it says in the console..

>Emulated resolution 960x540p (resolution I want it to be)

What's going on here? It certainly doesn't look 60fps despite it saying in the FPS counter it's 100+. I think it's rendering 1080p but scaling the aspect ratio down to 540p or some shit. The actual graphical quality is not reducing from 1080p to 480p. How do I change the "real" resolution not the emulated?

I just randomly came across a way to make a skyboxy skybox in Quake. It's so easy it hurts, and I hope that spacemap anon will see this.
Basicly, you need a field "sky" in your worldspawn and put the name of your skybox in it. Then you need to put the skybox files in [quakespasm installation]/gfx/env/ directory. For a sky value of "mysky" these files should be:
myskyup.tga for top plane
myskydn.tga for bottom plane
myskyft.tga for front plane
myskybk.tga for back plane
myskylf.tga for left plane
myskyrt.tga for right plane
Then use any sky texture. I found this out by digging into a map posted on quaddicted, and I have no idea in the slightest why it's so obscure and never explained anywhere on any wiki. I hope this'll help with your non-warped sky. Pic related is my result with a skybox I've made for another project I'm working on.

Just Googling 'quake 1 skybox' gives similar results, and at least 70% of all new Q1SP maps use skyboxes like that. The issue is that it's a completely non-vanilla feature as it requires both loading loose external files and the skybox functionality itself, so it'll break in basically anything that isn't Fitzquake or Darkplaces derived. Granted, that's what 99% of people use these days, but still.

Also, some people just prefer using the default animated sky style. I like it a lot, it adds some fun limitations like sticking to the Quake palette and figuring out how to orient the texture so it still looks good at the distorted areas of the 'sky tube,' but isn't too annoyingly obviously tiling when the player looks up. The cuboid skyboxes are just so damn still and lifeless.

If you want to play borderless, lower your screen resolution at the window's control panel, the lower the res the highter the fps for borderless FS.

If you want non borderless true fullscreen, you'll have to ditch 4.x thinkso. I had to go back to use the 3.x branch instead of the newest 4.x branch. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong and if true fullscreen could be still done by some .ini or command line tweak, but when I tried it it wasn't possible, and I suspected Graf Z just killed from the 4.x code branch.

Also the GZDoom vintage thing still supports down to true 640x480 fullscreen, and can emulate 320x200 5:4 with some performance gains, if you want to go down that low-fi rabbit hole.

So, after finishing Blood 2 and Shogo, I started playing Kiss Psycho Circus. In the end of the first "episode" right now. My expectations were low, due to being a licensed game about a rock band, but so far it has been pretty decent.

>You can choose between 4 characters, they all have their unique campaign and weapon set
>You start as random dudes, not as Kiss members, and has to collect pieces of clothing of a band member on each character's episode, so you can impersonate them and gain their powers
>The gameplay follows the Serious Sam school of design, throwing hordes of enemies which you get to dodge and blast them with powerful guns, except that the play area is much more cramped than SS, which can make things frustrating, especially on harder difficulties
>Pure old-school, carry all you want, get health items, find secret areas and keys
>The graphics look nice, for the time, but the soundtrack is oddly not "metal" enough. It's based on a heavy metal band, for god's sake!!
>There's little explanation for everything, I still don't know who are the guys I'm playing with, nor what are the enemies, not to mention the explanations of game items is only given on "pamphlet" items hidden on secret areas. It didn't, Doom engine have a hardlock of making the player's pawn wait 7 tics (around 0.2 sec) on floor before jumping again, disallowing bhop, the only trick possible was SR40.

Bhop in GZDoom is nothing new for sure because ZScript allows overriding that 7 tic delay and stuff, problem is that Zandro WON'T DO SHIT if stuff is Zscript, so i had to smash my head against the wall to figure out a way through ACS to achieve it.

If you're asking if you can use other external programs to make your lightmap, no. Quake has a set lightmap resolution (1/4 texture scale, IIRC). ericw's tools support baked in ambient occlusion and bounce lighting, if you want those.

There's a bunch of great maps immediately following Dead Simple, like Tricks & Traps, Donut Of Decimation, and Refueling Base.

It's more the city levels I think is a long string of weak maps, Factory, Downtown, Tenements, these maps are so dull, some people like Inmost Dens, but I don't. After these, we start seeing some better maps, like The Citadel, Barrels O' Fun, then the aforementioned The Spirit World, with Monster Condo and The Living End following, though I think these maps are great, they tend to intermingle with some pretty meh levels.

I remember when I first read that Id's getting rid of a traditional DM multiplayer mode I was slightly disappointed. Battlemode looks great and a huge step up from 2016's MP, but what irks me is that Id's having this instead of a proper MP in the first place because they said it was supposed to go against 2016's MP and how "non-Doom" it was. Although to be frank, 2016's MP had potential to be good if it was just a little faster, didn't have a weapon limit/loadout, maybe some tweaks with the movement physics somehow, etc. Hell, Id's done that with pretty much every other game before Rage. It could've been THAT simple, but they decided to ditch it for Battlemode. The way Machine Games fucked up the Wolfenstein franchise is unforgivable.

They've made 2 great games in a row,New Order and Old Blood and then The New Colossus happened which was inferior in pretty much everything.
Level design that makes no sense,No boss fights,the story is inferior,cutscenes that keep getting in the way,less weapons and a overall worse story.

Now Youngblood is coming out and it's like the ultimate fuck you to this franchise. Not only is co-op which equals worse level design most likely but it doesn't feel like a hopeless world dominated by a powerful regime.
Also that big discourse at the end of TNC where they say the nazi regime will fall and then you see YB where BJ gets kidnapped and nazis are still going strong.....in the 80s.
So basically not only it's been 20 years but also means everything you went through was futile.

Making a Quake 1 remake is a difficult task.
They've made a good new episode but that's it.
It wasn't more impressive than other vanilla projects made by the fanbase.

I find myself more likely to play doom multiplayer if someone tells me they are on a server, even if that server is 1/20 players. However, I don't join servers that only have one player on them otherwise. I feel like I'm not the only one who does this and it is probably the reason for doom multiplayer's inactivity despite the fact I constantly see people wanting to play it. If we had some sort of system that garuntees certainty that other players want to play without blindly joining a server I feel like it would fix that issue. Why don't we have some sort of /vrdoom/ irc server specifically for people seeking to play multiplayer doom. Once a server reaches above 2 players, that greatly raises the chance of others joining. Wolfenstein was barely political at all until TNO, before then it was just a pretext for action adventures with politically acceptable targets; nobody that matters objects to Wehrmacht and Schutzstaffel troopers being gunned down en masse, or shooting Adolf Hitler in the mouth with a machinegun.
They didn't ever show much of the actual atrocity side of Nazi Germany, because a lot of that shit is fucking dark, disturbing, haunting, and depressing (which also requires being able to handle and convey it with certain grace and tact), and previous devs figured that would be too much of a bummer in what's supposed to be action adventure games.

TNO handled it really quite well, it genuinely managed to fit into the overall style and tone of the game. I'm rather impressed at it actually.
Then TNC handled it absolutely fucking abysmally and ham-handedly, with extremely cringy references to current events and memes, which will date the game in the worst of fucking ways.

Political themes in games aren't inherently bad, but the question is if you can make a poignant observation or likeness, or if you can even tell a decent joke about it, and without it coming across as shallow, cheap, and heavy handed. The New Colossus could not do this.
Comparing the 2016 American election and the climate at that time to an actual warmongering and genocidal regime that murdered millions is frankly extremely dishonest and comes across as incredibly cheap and crass, and not in a fun way.

All of this doesn't even get into how the game was not even close to as good, which is an even bigger concern still as to why they shouldn't touch Quake.

I played through nuDoom whole lot of 4 times over the course of 3 years, last time on Ultra Nightmare, and don't plan on ever replaying it again.

I tested this first on a grenade throw animation and I literally just changed the arm's color and shading, no changes to the size, filenames, position or anything else, unless Clip Studio rewrote some particular .png settings when I saved them. Slade's map editor is actually pretty robust, it's almost like Doombuilder but with some weird quirks it'll take you an afternoon to learn. Its biggest downside for me is that the 2D edit mode, (yes, not the 3D mode, 2D mode) is really choppy for me for some reason, and I've not idea if that's xfce's fault, or my graphics card's, or someone else's. I've been running into a particular bug when running Duke3D with DukePlus and the HRP mod. Namely, the Devastator is invisible, and I looked around a bit over on the Duke4 forums and did a quick search for information about this bug and apparently this is fixed by some bugfix mod called "Nixx Fix". The problem is though, that when I search for this mod I get all of jack and shit, no download link, no mention on the Duke4 forums on where to find the download link, etc.

At first I wanted to put it in a very cramped city area, kind of like the Haunted Cathedral level in Thief. This space look is kinda serviceable, but then there actually isn't much space around the building before running into this position overflow thing where your camera ends up on the other end of the map, so there isn't much space for going into space.

The inside is almost fully mapped, the point is going to be slowly making your way inside. I might even finish it in time, given that the deadline has been made eternal.
I'll try to opt for the cramped city look in the end, iteratively adding more stuff now that I know what func_detail is.

Good news, an experienced Quake mapper has approached me and offered to make the hub, he says he can whip one relatively quickly since he doesn't have to take things like enemy design into account, so HUH may not take forever after all.

Again, I will take any tardies in the meantime since I have still to finish my own shit, the mapper told me he could leave space for extra portals so that wont be an issue.

Probably because the approach to making Doom's graphics was pretty experimental and they made them in a mix of ways, digitized toys, digitized models sculpted from clay, later steel models with latex skins, stuff made from stock or library photos, some textures drawn by hand with pencil then scanned in and processed, some painted from scratch on computers.

The Neural Upscale kind of takes away that feel from it.
