So, fucking VIS, how does it work? I am still doing the space station, which has windows.
I put the whole thing in a box made from sky brushes. Ofc VIS now takes forever. I heard you can use detail brushes to alleviate vis computing - does that mean I should make all non-function brushes details inside the box? E.g. even the outer walls of the station and such? I mean, it's still not even a minute or so, but it's kind annoying when testing.

The amount of detail and work put into the maps is just astonishing, I highly recommend anyone that has even a shred of interest for Quake to give it a shot. I played the first versions of the mod so I don't know if certain things are changed.
IIRC you can change the sound effects but those features like Tilt++ are there.

It's because he's part of the newer modders, their approach to doom modding is "How much shit can I humanly cram into my mod?" Without stopping to consider what actually benefits what they're trying to do.

Nah. Eternal's going for a bright garish HUD and more arcade style gameplay, they've streamlined some of the shit from Doom 4, like removing some of the equipment items and just giving you two of them which are bound to their own buttons. Doom Eternal EXP is just as much random shit they can cram in, along with extra addon mods people have made over the years, thrown in just because obviously more shit is better

It isn't bad but it's just not that memorable,it feels quite generic. Nothing about it stands out.

Eternal DoomSlayer is like a modern remake of Classic Doomguy armour,which is exactly what it should've been from the start.
It's more detailed and more "loud" but it fits far more with the tone and atmosphere of the game.
What if they did it on purpose to see the audience reaction and see their feedback kinda like asking "which one is better?"

It's too safe. Superficially, the only things separating it from Spartan armor is the visor color, the specks of orange on the body, and the red nipple light. Eternal still looks a bit Halo-ey since it's just a redesign of 2016, but it's got Predator gear and a bit more crazy.

When you put them side by side. 2016 Doomslayer really looks weak.
He seems so small,while Eternal Slayer is like a bodybuilder,kinda like Duke Nukem.
It feels far more recognizable, 2016 Slayer,you could slap it on something like Destiny or Halo and no one would notice the difference.

Yes, but Halo became immensely more popular and stayed that way for many years, thanks to sequels, prequels and spinoffs. So when the average person (average relative to vidya) thinks of a green space marine, they think of Master Chief, and when they see reboot Doomguy, they'll call him a ripoff.
I think they should've made him just a dude in a vest and leather instead of power armor, and keep the general color scheme to make him stand out.

Maybe it's because I think of Doomguy and Doomslayer as different characters.

One's a guy in normal combat gear and he just happens to be the baddest warrior in the world, the other is some kind of demi-god that exists to Kill The Demons, and I kind of liked how the 2016 armor made him look far more anonymous, and in a way, almost like a knight in full armor.
The bare arms and midriff suits classic Doomguy more IMO.

Black gloves in the cover and ending of Thy Flesh Consumed
Brown during gameplay and takes his glove during a melee attack for some reason.
He has a short haircut in the mugshot but he's shaved in that ending.

the idea of doom copying halo despite halo having any bit of inspiration from doom (same kinda for marathon) reminds me of how uncharted was said to be a rip off of tomb raider before that series became an uncharted clone
the point of the new hud and pick ups is because of "feedback" so players get to be more aware of shit during the gameplay, since that's a lesson they learned from older designs like the blue bottles
problem is that making them glow like that feels weird even by doom standards
i think the worst one is the question mark
it doesn't fit in anything doom related and feels so lazy

I mean mechanically the shoulder cannon is just a new way to contextualize the subweapons from Doom 4, and that got streamlined as we only have two now: The flamethrower and grenades, at least from what we've seen so far. As for the hookshot on the SSG, I think that's a great addition to the roster of abilities seeing as it turns enemies into points for more mobility.
I'm also fine with the big floating powerups and shit. I mean fuck all of the items in Doom 4 had a neon glow to them. Ultimately it shouldn't matter as long the gameplay keeps the same flow as it in Doom 4, though hopefully better this time around. It looks like we'll be dealing with the arena shit again, which is bit of a downer but I guess that's to be expect at this point, and really if I need a fix for traditional Doom gameplay, I got a gorillion user WADs to choose from.

Apparently the creator of Doom Slayer Chonicles and The Cult Hunter made a mapset for Blood called simply The Cult. Those other projects seem pretty vasyan-y but this is actually not bad. It's just some really solid Blood levels. Beware though, he really likes the Blood E1 philosophy of "cultist around every corner".

Years ago I had a flashlight mod for Doom 3. It wasn't the shoulder lamp or the ducttape mod. It gave every weapon a unique light. For instance the shotgun had a big and shallow light and the MG a narrow and focused light while the pistol only had a tiny red laser pointer and the plasma gun had a dull, big, blue light. I know everyone just says to play the BFG edition, but the different gun lights really made a subtle and nice difference to the game. I can't find it anywhere because all that ever comes up when you search for Doom 3 and "gun light" or "flashlight" is the duct tape mod.

Hideous Destructor is my favorite Doom mod, bar-none. Nothing else even comes close.

Sure, I like me some fun OP mods like High Noon Drifter or Final Doomer, but the novelty wears off quick since the challenge is rather watered down.

But Hideous Destructor? It's basically a completely different game to me, just with the Doom skin on. Every map completed feels like a conquest. You definitely feel like the underdog, and the struggle is harsh but doable. You have the tools and get-out-of-jail-for-free cards to deal with many seemingly unwinnable situations. I love what stark a contrast it is going from a vanilla Doom session to going to a HD Doom session. Not that either is better or worse, they're just totally different beasts.

so okay I'm playing Doom 3 and I like it, especially with my stupid meme varilight mod. It's my guilty pleasure. But holy fuck why are the numbers so messed up in the difficulties? There has to be a way to change it. Normal and Veteran have 0 changes in monster behaviors or numbers. But in Veteran you take 70% more damage. That's fucking nuts. Normal is way too easy in comparison, you take 10% less damage. I haven't died yet in Veteran but a single zombie marine with a shotgun can take me down from 100 health to 30 health before I kill him, if I don't have a nice spot to peak around and take potshots at him, and that's with armor. It's fucking ridiculous. If anyone knows how to tweak damage numbers I'd really appreciate it, because taking almost 3/4ths more damage is just absurd. Even 50% extra damage taken would be much better.

And honestly if the shotgun spread wasn't so abysmal it probably wouldn't be an issue so far, if I'm a full body length away from a guy most of the pellets miss.

So, going through a Lithtech shooters binge. Finished Blood 2 and Shogo. Here are my thoughts.

>Blood 2
"You'll die a slow, slow death", the biggest sack of bullshit in the universe, because you die very, very quick on this game. Hitscan enemies have perfect accuracy and zero reaction time, it's much worse than in Blood 1, and unlike that game, crouching does nothing. The cultists abandoned their robes and dress in modern military gear, and seen to have adapted to your tactics from the first game. Their behavior is like the Monolith faction (no pun intended) in Stalker. Enemies with explosives are horribly broken, because the blast radius is huge and goes through walls, the only possible cover is staying far away, which is not always possible because the game loves to spawn these enemies in tight corners. But when YOU gain possession of explosive weapons, they're piss weak, won't even gib a basic enemy in one shot. There's also these insectoid enemies that spit acid on you, they weren't a problem at first, but then the game starting spamming them just behind you when you're already busy fighting something else, fuck that shit. Finally, there's a serious problem with utter lack of health, had to use cheats sometimes for getting stuck with 2hp just before a fight with unavoidable damage. It's odd because there is a solution for the problem, the life leech, but the game only gives it very late.

It's amazing, despite being release before Blood 2, and running an earlier version of the same engine, it runs much better, requiring no fix, while I had to spend a few hours fixing Blood 2. Still crashed a few times. It's a pretty short game, and you also die very quick, but it's not nearly as bad as Blood 2. Just quick save before turning every corner and start shooting before you even see anything and you're good. The mech sections work exactly like the on foot sections, it doesn't really feel you're piloting anything. Hot anime girls images everywhere, I would have got some interesting faps if I played this game back in the day. Despite being set in the future, it doesn't feel much futuristic at all, no crazy technology at all other than the mechs.

Now, I'm off to play Kiss Psycho Circus The Nightmare Child. A licensed game about a rock band, a FPS game about a band, go figure. My expectations are low, but I'm going through anyway.

Blood 2 is generally renowned as an absolutely awful game. I think it's actually worse than Duke Nukem Forever.
The reason weapons feel so weak is because the damage scales on random, from an arbitrarily low to eh, high-ish, meaning more often than not you will do below average damage for the weapon, hence an axe zombie may take anywhere from 2 to 6 shells from the shotgun, and this was by design.

It's fundamentally just a really bad game, and in my opinion a lot worse than some games which gets touted as the worst ever (such as E.T for the Atari 2600). It's particularly shocking as it's a sequel to a game that's actually pretty good, so it's very jarring to go from one to the other.

Goddamn Amid Evil was fucking mint. Liked it way more than Dusk. Unlike Dusk which got worse as it went along Amid Evil got better for the most part. (3 is definitely the worst episode) Ep. 4 was when they finally got a handle on how to design challenging enemies that are actually fun to fight and Ep. 6 was when they figured out how to make the boss fights interesting. Really hope those devs do another FPS game because I think with another attempt they could make something that rivals the classics.

incidentally at least one qstyle version caused certain monsters to be so constantly changing that they infinitely stacked all champions forms, crippled the framerate and became gods

Bringing this up again, but I gotta say, promoting a game like Doom Eternal by having a speedrun of one of the levels is a genius idea marketing wise.

For one, obviously, it shows off what the game has to offer. Also, judging by the fact that it's a speedrun it'll be done in a completely non-conventional and interesting way compared to scripted gameplay you'd see in E3. I imagine it'll be somewhat similar to back when the game was fully revealed and it showed gameplay of PC with an increased FOV. It wouldn't be just some business dude telling the player to play a specific way, it would be someone who clearly has knowledge of the ins and outs of the game, which by extension would mean they'd show off new and interesting ways to play the game and move around compared to just an E3 demo. Finally, it's probably one of the least "corporate" forms of advertising for any game because ID's basically saying that they wholeheartedly respect the Doom community and its legacy so much, they are willing to let someone not only speedrun the game when it's not even out yet, but also study it in depth to figure out the best strats and such.

In all honesty, more game devs should do something similar to this. It's one of the absolute best ways Eternal could be marketed and its mechanics shown off to the public, and I'm somewhat surprised no one else has said anything about it.

Now if it is to maintain even token backward compatibility, it must remain linear non-multi-threadable, and thus reliant on CPU single-core speed.

It's fun and full of creative ideas, like a time travel puzzle, a level that you expect jumpscares in, but transforms into a hellpit instead, or level that requires you to shoot a giant demon head in the eyes, find ufo, battle in a literal colloseum for hell noble spectators, fondle all of devils balls or just flush a toilet.
You should definitely play it in full.

He has shot down a LOT of reasonable ideas that would've improved GZDoom for either arbitrary reasons or "just because", thus the "NO" meme.
Also did a lot of questionable decisions and one of the latest (resolution saga) revealed that he does not care about many things people take for granted, such as consistency and precise resolutions. Also requests for disabling bilinear filter by default were met with "NO, this is the modern way to play and I like it, so you should too".
Another thing he did was "fix" some angle commands that worked just fine for last 8 years, but apparently should've been working differently according to Graf, which made all mods that used those commands (there are not many, but still a few) to bug out.
Every time Graf breaks or "fixes" some feature or the other, he expects modders to fix their mods, even if those moders are no longer in the community.
Also notoriously gets pissy when modders tell people to use specific (not newest) version of GZDoom.

Also all of the features of BD including finishers were already a thing in: Battlefield, Crysis, Serious sam 3, Duke Nukem Forever etc. before they were added by MarkyMark
And the gore system was done before (and done better) by Soldier of Fortune 1/2 and Vivisector.

And melee finishers were already in that godawful CoD Doom that got scrapped, way before BD gained any sort of notoriety.

And the method he used for hitboxes was first conceived in the ZDoom forums, but nobody wanted to use it since its too resource intensive and involves spamming 2 additional actors every couple of frames for every enemy in the map. And that's was exactly the thing that inspired Marky.

There is no original bone in BD, and it never influenced any actual game dev. That one is just sweet lies Marky tells himself when he cries himself to sleep at night, mourning all those nonexistent bucks he couldve got if he had talent to make his own brutal game.

Finishing blows to kill enemies and get rewards sounds like a nice mechanic, but it's a bit drawn out in this and Doom 4. Just a good, solid gibbing punch or chainsaw slice should do it. Add bit more flair than just hitting someone with a berserk fist, but it should still be quick and concise.

Remember to cap your frames to whatever your display refresh rate is. GZDoom gets no advantage from 400+fps overhead in less complex areas, since all its logic is at 35 fps, but it will still use 100% CPU no matter what, unless you limit it.

Because nobody of the core fanbase wanted those features in Doom. And even if they wanted to mod some of those into a retro FPS, they'd be modding for some other engine that would take those features better - like Half Life.

try running it on a map with 1000+ monsters. I have i7 3770 (not new, i know, but still) and on some maps it gets down to 10-15 fps, while with other mods it pushes ~100 fps in same places just fine.

IIRC some ZScript wizard did the proper math version of the hitbox definition, but defining hitboxes with it takes a lot of math, and would require to re-do all the monsters from scratch. And at that point you might as well re-do everything from scratch proper, and people who have skill and time to do so would most probably rather do their own thing than fixing someone else's shit.
BDLite that was supposed to be "BD but fixed" opted to just remove hitboxes and everything associated with them outright.

GZDoom is indeed a clusterfuck that can create a lot of issues but when used properly by people who know what they're doing it can do wonders.
A prime example is Samsara,an ambitious mod with several sprites and animations from different games. Incredible at the time and still is but it clearly shows its limits due to the lack of other resources.

BD could be reworked with ZScript but for obvious reasons we mentioned before it didn't happen.

On MODDB there's a Half Life mod that adds CS guns. So you can play HL1 campaign with those. Closest you can get. Oh there's also the add-on you can buy on Steam, condition zero or whatever but it sucks.
