It's time to discuss the greatest video game trilogy of all time.

Which of the original three numbered games is /vr/'s favourite? Which game had the most convincing atmosphere? The best map design? Which had the best protagonist? The best soundtrack?

I'll detail my own opinions in the next post.

For me, the original Resident Evil had the best atmosphere of the bunch. While the voice acting was arguably at its worst in RE1, the real magic of it came from it being the first game in the series. You didn't know the rules of the game's world yet. Playing the game for the first time, for all I knew a vampire or ghost could have popped in from around a corner. That lack of knowing the game's limits is what fueled the game's atmosphere for me, the uncertainty.

I will say though, in terms of the technical elements of the games, such as music and lighting, Resident Evil 2 was the one that felt the most real to me. I think it had the best soundtrack of the bunch too.

Resident Evil 3 was another excellent game, but a huge tonal shift. Starting outdoors, following such a high octane action scene, made RE3 feel more like an action game than a horror game for me. I actually appreciate it for how different it feels in that respect, it stands out for trying something a little different.

Imagine if Resident Evil 2 was a triple disc game, and you unlocked Jill's campaign from RE3 after beating the game with both Claire and Leon. Would have gone down as the single greatest game of all time.

1 > 3 > 2

And don't you forget it

>> No.5752207

Besides Nemesis being able to follow you around I didn't care for 3. The minigame was better than the actual game.

1 and 2 kind of go hand in hand in my opinion. 2 improved a lot on what the original did. But the original just had classic moments and a great atmosphere (music changing when the hunters are around.)

I wonder what ever happened to nesfag. We would really argue in this thread.

>> No.5752235

I think they're all the best in certain ways
RE1 had the best atmosphere, RE2 had the best story since it was just a fun 80s action movie, and RE3 had the best controls and settings since it took place mostly in the streets

if they had given the deadly silence treatment to RE2 and 3, it'd be the perfect trilogy

Nah, it's the layout, final boss, story presentation, and less memorable parts.
2 is still one of the best games ever made and ranks fairly high in my top 50, with 1 being the best game ever made.

RE2 started off outside with a gas truck exploding and setting everything on fire, and 5x as many zombies

with RE3, I'm never good enough with ammo to beat Nemesis every single time on hard mode so I never get the correct reward item when I want, I've read various guides on this but they all contradict each other. Combine that with the branching story paths and it triggers my autism too much. Never finished it

Resident Evil 2 was/is my favorite. Rented it back for my borrowed PlayStation and just had to own both. If it wasn’t for that game, I’d probably still be a Nintendo fanboy instead of heading down the PlayStation timeline.

Resident Evil 1 the best, most comfy and charismatic entry, and I didn't even play it when it came out so it's not nostalgia, it's just that good.

2 is also great, though I didn't care for 3 (CV is much better).

I've played RE2 most of all of them at the time. It just made RE(1) feel like a smaller, less polished game.

The feeling of the handguns in all of the three games was something me and my friends always found awesome.

As for RE3, none of my friends liked it too much back then. I, on the other hand, loved it, it was one of my best speedrun games ever, I loved to plough through it without saving. RE2 has never let me do that so easily.

I still favor 2 because of the cool ambience, the bigger experience having 4 quests to play and the overall better experience. But I know a lot of people who will say 1 is the best.

I can sympathize with this. RE1 feels so small and intimate compared to the other games taking place in big cities and the like. My main console growing up was the PS1, so even stuff like the menus in RE1 invoke that warm feeling for me.

It reminds me of back when horror games were genuinely terrifying to me. Even looking at the box art for an M rated horror game made me shiver.

>Which of the original three numbered games is /vr/'s favourite?
Resident Evil 2 because it felt the most well made to me of the games thanks to the A and B scenarios. Gave the game so much replayability. The map design, story, enemies, etc, all amazing for this game.

>Which game had the most convincing atmosphere?
Easily the first game. Had the best horror atmosphere and I am talking about the true original here btw not the remake. Remake was great but this thread is about those original three RE games I assume.

>The best map design?
Again I would think the first game had the best map design due to how iconic that mansion is.

> Which had the best protagonist?
I still think Leon is the best RE protagonist. From RE2 to RE4 he had a good character change/growth imo.

>The best soundtrack?
Resident Evil 3, I like to listen to the soundtrack at times and I have come to eventually like it the best of the games.

All three of these games are fantastic and should be must plays. I wish RE3 had another character to use but it did have the best controls of the three games. All games got pros and cons but mostly strengths with few weaknesses.

I own RE1-3 on PS since the time they came out and finished them together with a few school buddies back then. I never really liked RE desu. Everything is just dark, I fucking hate zombies and their retarded moaning and jump scares. Call me a pussyfag but I just don‘t enjoy the survival horror genre.

To be fair, he's honestly also the only RE character who's personality actually changed over the course of the series.
