I had two instances of fucked up saved files that left me scarred for life.
One time was with OoT, I saved right after getting the Master Sword for the first time, and had to turn off the game. When I returned later that day excited to play, something had gone wrong with saving because when I resumed the file I didnt have the Master Sword, and actually ended up having to do Jabu Jabu again.

The other time was with Pokemon Crystal. I had autistically caught and leveled up all the pokemons in the game to level 100. I have no idea how many hours that took, but one day I turned the game on, and only had the "New Game" option on the menu. Like a retarded kid I tried turning the gameboy on and off multiple times, blowing in the cartridge, even fucking changing gameboy batteries, but nope file was lost forever. I later decided it was something wrong with the cart, since it stopped registering saves. Everytime I saved and turned off, when I turned the gameboy on again the saved file wouldve been erased.

Now in every game that has a save mechanic I usually save multiple times, even in multiple files at once.

In FF6 it really doesn't matter since at the end of the game everyone is a copy and paste magic-wielding mannequin. Unless you're min-maxing through maintaining a low-level to fully exploit the Esper stat increases then it's just a matter of getting back to where you were so you won't miss out on the plot.

Compare that to FF5 or FF8 or FFX with your younger sibling blindly going through the Sphere Grid.

Old cartridges had batteries inside them that were used to maintain saves. If your copy of Crystal stopped saving, that means the battery is dead. Replace it, and it will work fine again (for several years at least, until the battery runs out again).

My older brother had been trying to get every emblem in Sonic Adventure 2 for weeks, and he was really close, only like 12 away.
I started playing before school one morning and started saving over his file on accident. I leapt up and unplugged the gamecube when it gives the warning about not turning the power off.
Too scared to check what had happened, I went to school and felt sick most of the day. When I got home, my brother was playing his file and all was well.
Looking back, I'm lucky I didn't corrupt the whole memory card.
