Pacmania was a legit phenomenon and a decade later the pac man machines would still be fed quarters in most arcades, and it would remain this way through the 90s.
By 1995 there would always be a beloved pac man machine at the back of the arcade, alongside an old sf2 champion edition machine. An arcade just didnt feel like an arcade if there were not pacman sounds mixed in with the background noise.

There is a bar in town that never got rid of their old tabletop pac man machine and drunk boomers still feed it. The game is timeless.

all I ever saw while growing up in the 90s was Ms. Pac-man. I think I've only seen a legitimate original Pac-Man machine once in my life.

This is true, ms pacman was far more common that original pacman. Every arcade had one or the other, and many arcades did convert their old pacman machines to ms pacman (it's an addon board to the normal pacman).

Ms pacman is also the more polished game.

ms and jr over original and plus all day, but they're still super fun games and it's hard to deny that the original revolutionized arcade games by being one of the first successful non-space-shooters

also, in the late 90s/early 2000s, when the machines were starting to wear out, namco released pic related so pac-man had another slight surge in popularity
i still see them in a bunch of places
