>Nintendo saved the video game industry!

Sweetie, please.

a) 32 million arcade units sold.

b) Took in over $100 million in quarters in 1983.

Who here is old enough to remember when Dragon's Lair saved video games?

Fuck I hated this game. I didn't have the reaction time or the memorization necessary to get anywhere in it. It was cool as shit to watch, though, since it was something totally different from everything around it.

I can't wait to play this and games like it in the thriving home console market Atari is providing!

Literally gay redditfag, please.
I don't know where you're getting those numbers that you're pulling out of your rekt anus they're as ridiculous as your interpretation of what they mean. It didn't sell 32 million units. Not even 32 million replacement LD players. Not even close. And $100M is fucking nothing. Shit like pacman took in billions. The only people who "remember" such bullshit are zoomers who heard it on youtube.

Oh its gonna be one of THESE threads huh? My current theory is that the European economy is in a constant state of crash so they don't even realize what one is. The Japanese video game industry didn't even get started until our "crash" opened up the market and we've consistently maintained about 2/3 of their revenues ever since then even during 1983-1987. It would be more accurate to talk about it in terms of a 1980-1982 American video game BOOM but of course that would never do.

Objectively incorrect. You might try to argue in hindsight that Space Invaders > Breakout or Galaxian > Asteroids but Japan's production output was nowhere near America's at the time

>>5733646
The numbers count Japanese exports as Japanese revenue. The arcade market was extremely competitive between the US and Japan up until Japan decisively pulled ahead with the fighting game bubble in the 90s (although we had MK too).

Not retro but we're currently in another period where the US has managed to regain its market share. It'll be interesting to see if it's another profound mistake on our part like in the 80s or a major opportunity properly capitalized on by Japan like in the 90s (mobile gaming?) that sees them pulling ahead again.

I'm not really trying to argue US vs Japan, I think that those markets coexist and rival one another in a productive way that we all benefit from. My point is that Europe sucks.

PC game market was doing fine in the US. It was only the home console market that was doing poorly.

Compare the US market for PC games which kept growing, where in places like the UK people just settled for cheap piece of shit computers which couldn't do any good games.
