I'm still so mixed on Blood upon revisiting it. Its like half of the game is terrible and the other half is incredible. Fighting cultists can sometimes be exhilarating but at others it can be annoying and frustrating. The other problem is that Blood's other enemies are mostly just annoyances rather than enemies that add to its core combat experience. The ghosts and the smaller flying golems might as well not even be there. I think they both could have served as some projectile based ranged enemies but both of their ranged attacks deal almost no damage to you. Also the larger stone golems literally cannot it you if you are crouching. I don't understand how that got past testing. Episodes 1 and 2 are both fantastic but 3 and 4 are mixed bags AT BEST. If there was one game that I wish could get a quality remake, it would be Blood. There is a truly GOAT game buried in there somewhere.

I decided to keep playing Obituary despite hating the rocket launcher zombies, and I have to say their "Hightech Guy" custom monster is actually neat. Nearly invisible, extremely fast, doesn't do a ton of damage but it's hitscan and a decent RoF, while also being about as frail as a zombieman and making constant noise while moving so you know when one is near (unless they just became alert and get the jump on you). Overall I approve of the enemy and think it adds something to DOOM's bestiary, though I don't know if I'd want it in every wad.

So, what if I told you a friend of mine managed to create a fusion of Starfox 64 and Ace Combat...

in GZDoom?
I've been helping him here and there with various things, but he's really doing the work because every time he updates it, it becomes almost an order of magnitude better than the previous version and he's just cranking these out every couple of days.

What do you guys think? Normally you'd think this would be better suited to /aceg/ but considering what it's running in, I figured I'd try here first.

Oh, and it's an IWAD with all original materials so it's standalone. We're hoping you guys can find some of the weirder bugs that might be buried in there, especially with all the new AI we're trying.

My personal favorite is this guy, the Condor. Secondary weapon is a high damage high ROF autocannon, and with the rate of fire upgraded to max it becomes a GAU-8 and is oh so satisfying. Need better sound effects for it.

Anyway, what >>5731961 said already hits the mark. Slaughter is largely made by mappers who have played Doom ad nauseam, to the point where the traditional mechanics bore them and the only entertainment value they can get out of the game is by exploiting the system in an extreme manner. At that point what you're playing becomes a separate "meta" game (could almost be considered bullet hell), and that's not the genre most people came for.
I think that's why so many folks chafe at Hideous Destructor--aside from the steep (and arguably unintuitive) learning curve, the mod is a super sharp departure from Doom's simple-to-control high-speed power-fantasy thrill ride.

Personally, I also think slaughter has a bad habit of detracting from the importance of level design, the usefulness of the entire arsenal, and enemy prioritization.
Slaughter combat requires you to constantly stay on the move, and combined with the large enemy numbers this means slaughter maps are rather large and open. It's constant strafing combat with no time for level exploration and no place for using the map itself as an obstacle. Many slaughterwads are quite beautiful, but their arenas are reduced in function to eye candy.
The arsenal issue comes down to the fact that most slaughtwads are reduced to BFG and rocket launcher spamfests. That's what happens when every enemy encounter is a gigantic crowd, and you can't afford to waste energy cells on the plasma rifle; any other weapon (usually the SSG) becomes a cleanup tool.
And lastly there's enemy encounter prioritization, or the reduced importance of it. Part of the issue stems from the reliance upon area-of-effect weapons in slaughter combat, making every shot a "two birds, one stone" situation where any kind of precision targeting is inefficient. The other part of the issue is the inevitability of, and even reliance upon, infighting. It is insanely easy to initiate with such high monster counts, and this means huge parts of the crowd will be distracted by others--which in turn reduces threat levels and does much of the work for you. Monster crowds are reduced to large blobs for you to fire rockets into, and even the one threat that stands out above this (the Archvile) is not immune to such large-scale infighting.

I saw Ranger at a home improvement store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “HUH? HUH? HUH?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen boxes of nails in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the boxes and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Ehh, the problem with sequential order is that it has to be done one of two ways- either carry over the weapons and armor from the previous map, which will make every map past the first much easier than intended as so far they're all meant to be shotgun-started, or wipe the player's inventory anyway, which gives no advantages other than not going back to a hub map. A lot of people like hub maps- myself included so I'm biased as fuck here- as they're universally neat and give a nice way for players to wander around and play what they think looks good or interesting in whatever order they want, with no back-end debates about whose map should go where in the order.

If the maps had all been designed with a specific, universal setpiece as the start and finish for each so they were all visually (if not gameplay-wise) interconnected, it'd be one thing, but I think most everyone went in wildly different directions with their maps theme-wise.

Start map is just 'start,' you don't include the .bsp part when entering the name in the changelevel trigger. IIRC the showrunner wants both; most of the time it's common courtesy to supply the .map along with the .bsp for any map releases in case someone wants to see how something was done in a map, but it's not a necessity.

YOu have to choose the theme in the worldspawn entity. You can have medieval, runic or techbase, so you can only have keys, runes or keycards, but not mixed afaik.

Just use google. Vis basically computes WHEN you can see stuff, so it won't be rendered unnecessarily. I don't know how relevant this it today, but my autism would never allow me to have leaks or anything.

Your map has a leak the moment an entity can view the void. That also includes placing triggers and relays in the void.

I love the new 5th episode. The amount of detail they could cram in was wonderful. And we see that even more so with Ion Fury. They even talk about they're original scope and plans for Duke 3D with maps but had to keep scaling back and scaling back as the game had to run at a minimum of 20fps on a commercial rig they had.

They said Hollywood holocaust had clothes and jewelry stores you could go into and palm trees and a large bridge and it all had to just get kept peeled back. When you play it now it's so empty and it's such a shame. A full remake of Duke 3D even in a current build engine would be so interesting. Even just the first episode even. To see it flooded with detail what they would have done had they the tech back then.

I played the first episode and I enjoyed it.
Some parts are really good,the weapons are satisfying and the enviroments are comfy and beautiful.
But it goes hard on the backtracking and puzzles,not Hexen-tier but it can be frustrating.

The enemy roster is good too,same for the soundtrack,it uses a bunch of Unreal Tournament unused tracks(the creator got the permission from the composer).

Hey guys. There's one idiot from 2ch/v/doom trying to argue that Doom was never a funny colourful arcade game as we all know and was actually a dark horror like Doom 3 which according to him was not a spin-off but a natural development of the franchise in the direction of horror as well as PSXDoom/D64. As part of arguing he posted this screenshot stating that he added some "CRT filter" to it which he claims is the way Doom is meant to play with, because "LCD monitors and default GZDoom settings broke the original dark style and turned the game into some mario colourful bright shit".

This schizo is also a dumb hater of mods (Brutal Doom) and Nu-Doom games and says that the franchise went on a wrong direction because of "crappy mods". He praises Doom 3 though.

Don't make everything 90 degree walls and then say it's inspired by Doom and Heretic, these games had walls at many angles, their actual limitation was not rendering room over room sectors. If you want to make a shooter like that, fine, but don't say it's like Doom. Optionally, you could take some pages from Rise Of The Triad, which did 90 degree walls, but played around a lot with height.

Don't make sprites shit-ass stick figures with single shade colors, that will just make shit look like an Atari 2600 sprite except someone forgot they were generally only one color. Nobody drew characters as stick figures for shooters back then, nobody who made an actual good game at any rate. This isn't to say you can't have some kind of stylized look to your game, but pic related just doesn't look fucking good.
You will have to actually draw sprites with some detail on them, optionally pre-render 3D models, or digitize physical models or live actors, you'll likely have to edit these in post.

Don't make sprites and textures around 16x16 pixels, even Wolfenstein 3D was doing 128x128 textures for its walls in 1993.

Don't make it generate levels procedurally, this is an enormously unsuitable mechanic for a first person shooter, it will make everything feel lifeless and stale. You will have to sit down and actually make levels for your game, which means you will have to take a look at and get some ideas about level design theory, like how to do level progression, how to craft encounters, and making your level so that it's not difficult for the player to orient in.

Blood's problem is that the levels have a ton of, as they say, conceptual grandness, and are very impressive for the Build engine. However. the rest of the game doesn't match the quality of Episode 1 and 2's levels. The enemies are either a pain to deal with (the cultists at some points and the Evil Dead hands) or a bore (everything else). The weapons aren't as punchy as people say they are. Explosions turn enemies into generic gib fountains instead of actually tearing them into pieces like you'd expect. I'd fall in love with the game if enemies and weapons were replaced with Duke 3D's or even Shadow Warrior's.

The cultists can be fun, but their presence can slow the game down to SOFII-levels of speed, which isn't really appropriate considering how the game is set up.

Okay, I managed to finish it. What a ride. I really like your style, it reminds me of Turok/Turok 2. The graves in the caves and the boiler room were pretty cool. The statue was awesome, how long did it take you?

As before, it was way too dark for me in many, many parts. You can't see where you're supposed to be going, you can't see enemies, zombies are more annoying than anything else and I FUCKING HATE ZOMBIE SEWERS, I already hated them in the id levels, seriously, fuck that shit.

You might consider putting clip textures onto the stairs, because it's often janky moving around them. Especially in the beginning, during the descent - why actually should I do that at all instead of just jumping down? It's not like the Nailgun is good enough to warrant dealing with the death knights. That said, apprehending death knights with only a shotgun is mean. Consider maybe making the descending stairs larger.

The shambler didn't have any health packs lying around, I only won it by cheesing through the stairs and playing peekaboo. And fighting a shambler with just grenades, buckshot and a handful of regular nails is not fun, remember they are resistant to explosives.

I didn't find a single secret and couldn't figure out for the love of me how to get the yellow armor and superhealth in the room before the shambler. Jumping didn't work and shooting anything didn't work either. And what was the bottom of the pit in the round room for? There wasn't anything but a teleporter bringing me back.

This was a lot of nitpicking now, but I really, really liked your detailing and the verticality and seeing stuff I could visit later and such. Put some more health and fine tune a bit and I will love it.

Thanks for trying it out. I've started on Monday, though I put a lot of my free time into it, I'm guessing around 25-30 hours, the statue was maybe 10-20 minutes. As for your crits, I've intended the pillars in the shambler's arena to be the cover for player; I don't think it makes the fight much more fun than peeking the corner, but then I think it's hard to make a good shambler fight. It's the same deal with archviles, for the same reasons.
The yellow armor one is both the most basic and worst secret idea I had; you're supposed to grenade jump up there. That's why there is a megahealth there too.
The secret in the pit might be equally awful now that I think of it. One of the walls there is non-solid.
Other secrets are a more classic deal. In the newest version there is something even better than that statue in one of the secrets.

Is Heretic really not great or I don't get something about it? Barely made myself to complete first episode, and that's using Wayfarer's Tome because default weapons suck. Alright, overall I like it.

Right at the start, the fire thingies are still kinda dark, maybe put some light there.

Consider moving the platforms closer together, as I was falling down a few times when trying to jump, because they are pretty far away and then you just barely hit the edge.

At the first beam with the health and such, consider making those wider, as on my way to the health I got stuck, probably because the player box hit the diagonal beam because the walking one wasn't wide enough.

I really liked the floating platform thingy, that looked insanely cool.

The demon at the lightning gun is stuck, they need lots of space for some reason. Lightning gun itself is borderline useless because it eats ammo like you mom eats twinkies and just the initial 20 or 30 or what aren't nearly enough to do anything of importance in the end fight (which I liked, despite it being a huge FUCK YOU).

I had more, but I accidentally deleted my already finished post.

And something to everyone having lots of stairs and such: PLEASE use Clip or make the stairs lowe, because getting stuck all the time is not fun at all.

That's like comparing apples and oranges.
Two different games serving two vastly different purposes.

Quake is about a more medieval and otherworldly setting. It's a world changing event, the hero is almost unimportant.

Blood is about a horror fantasy taking place in about the 1920-30s. The hero is the main focus.

gameplay is very different too. Blood is more about using different kinds of attacks on certain enemies in a certain way. Quake's enemies (usually) dont have resistance or susceptibility to certain types of damage, so you can combo whatever weapons you want to kill enemies. Where Blood locks you into a pattern, Quake is more freeform, allowing you to fight in the way that you see fit.

Blood is also much slower than Quake. Quake has bunnyhopping and instant weapon switch, and it just rewards you for moving and attacking quickly. Blood makes you be patient.

Basically, why are you even comparing two games that do two completely different things?
