Just wondering, how would you explain the niche/role of a rail gun and lighting gun/thunderbolt compared to a shotgun and a machine/chaingun?
Like, what's the differences and how they could work?

>> No.5727353

>>5727335
rail gun should be stronger per shot and used as a replacement for any other weapon used for sniping, the lightning gun should be the worse of 2 superweapons, essentially it should be handled how quake 3 does it but buff the lightning a little bit more and make it eat ammo

>> No.5727357

I always thought LG's were like a hybrid of chainguns and plasma guns in the sense they could be usefull at close and strong but worse at accuracy and ammo management.
I wonder if the Telsa Gun from RTCW is a good example and also how could flamethrowers compare.

Genuinely difficult question, the ZM is lighter and ammo is common, but the fucking thing will jam and overheat on you. Whereas the Lib is powerful and reliable, but it's heavy and ammo is more scarce so you'll find yourself collecting brass and converting 4.26 ammo frequently.

I just use the ZM, it's a space age piece of shit but god damn is it fun.

This happens in professionally made video games, movies, and music as well. Your average consumer doesn't stop to look at the details. Have you watched someone on twitch or a friend play through a video game? They most likely just run through the levels to the next objective without paying attention to the environment and art. People who make maps, or other art are more likely to pay attention to the details and appreciate the work you've done. Most importantly you should be doing this for yourself.

If you’re truly starved for AFPS of any sort, it’s unfortunately your best bet. I can’t really recommend it in its current state, but you can download it for free and play as Ranger only if you want to give it a spin.
The hope is that after Doom Eternal releases, QC will stop having a skeleton team and actually be developed, but that’s a pipe dream.
I don’t think it has any staying power, sadly. It tried chasing the hero shooter trend of Overwatch and its clones, but as far as I’m aware, those ended up dying anyway.

For a retail release, 25 bux doesn't seem too much. Based on the fact it's a fully-fledged Build game from the ground up and not just a mod lacking polish plus there being what I assume to be 7 episodes (the page calls them "zones" but it could be the same thing), it could certainly be a worse price. Dusk and Amid Evil are both $20 and they're definitely worth their price.

Because they hear that the level geometry isn't actually 3D but 2D planes assembled to make something that looks 3D.

What they ignore is that regardless of how the game renders, Doom's world and gameplay is still very much three dimensional, they either forget that height is still a thing even if it's ignored in a few instances for the sake of speed, or they downplay the shit out of that and then try to weasel out a way to make themselves sound like they were actually correct.

It's not earthshattering, but it's pretty good, and I enjoyed playing it.

Imagine if Romero applied what he had learned by Doom 2 and Quake and made his own Thy Flesh Consumed style episode, if TFC kept being balls hard throughout its entirety (it does not fuck around on UV), and with a decent hell aesthetic distinct from Inferno. Has some consistent themes too, like the Evil Eye decoration being used to denote shootable switches, and those glowing red cracks like you saw in E1M8B.
Some people were upset by how hard it was, and just wanted more Knee Deep In The Dead. I don't understand those people.

I kinda wanna say that buying the physical box wasn't really worth it (mine arrived three weeks after shipping began, and people had already spread it on here in like a day), but I think the levels themselves with the Buckethead soundtrack was worth it, it's like $7 or so on Romero's site. The levels with .midi stand-ins is free.

Also, I bought the (smaller version) of the box because I had money to spare at the time, and everything you get is actually worth the price if you're into it all. The CD is all high quality songs, though none of the MIDIS which I was unhappy about, I wanted a CD packed full of Jimmy's songs. The stupid floppy disk USB drive is good quality plastic, and legitimately looks like a floppy. The box is also neat, I've been thinking of using it to keep shit in but I'm not really sure what.

I really hate the SSG zombie actually.
Maybe because my experience with them is mostly them being used as replacements in gameplay mods, where they'll throw the balance completely tits off because most levels ever are not made with them in mind.

They can easily sneak up on you because they sound like all the other zombies, and at 20 fucking pellets at once, RNG is just not likely to be kind to you.
Mind that normal shotgun baldies only hit you for 3 pellets, so that's like being hit by like 6 or 7 baldies simultaneously, which is something that'd only be likely to happen in some kind of crafted ambush or trap encounter.

I don't think anyone worships them that way. It's pretty obvious they have flaws, but just listing your complaints in a general way without describing what exactly is wrong with those things is just glorified shitposting.
I'd also argue that Blood's arsenal is much better than you think it is, and comparing it to Duke's does it a huge disservice. Apart from slightly redundant dynamite types, every weapon is unique; in addition to different damage types and effects, their mode of operation can be hitscan, thrown, missile, constant short-range stream, and whatever the voodoo doll does. Compare and contrast with Duke's 90's obligatory three hitscan weapons and however many slightly different missile shooters. I also like how they made the pistol slot not useless ten minutes into the game by making it an actually viable weapon with a mean secondary attack.

I've noticed that "Slaughterwad" is often used as a pejorative in the Doom community.

Isn't there merit to the concept of a "slaughter map"? It seems like the equivalent of boiling Doom down to its pure action basics - dodging projectiles, crowd control, pickup management, reflexes. It seems like a welcome change of pace from keyhunting, a nice crescendo if you will.

What differentiates a good slaughter map from a bad slaughter map? How do you get a feel for its flow? Are the derisive "muh slaughter" remarks coming from some place of legit criticism, or are they from people who can't git gud at them?

Thats a fucking retarded argument for multiple reasons. 6 shotguns blasts is not "nothing." It takes an annoying amount of time considering that usually there are more than 1 cacodmons at a time you are dealing with. hence why the SSG was introduced to make killing lesser enemies less of an annoyance. In Half Life the enemies that require the most shotgun blasts would be the bullsquids or the Alien Grunts which need 3 M2 blasts each on hard. Both of these enemies also rarely ever show up in more than groups of 2. Also in Half Life ammo is much less of a concern and you have a much larger variety of weapons. The reason you use the shotgun in Doom is because you don't want to waste precious rocket or lasergun ammo on lesser enemies like Cacodemons. In Half Life you have guns like the crossbow which can dispatch enemies very fast and the ammo is pretty plentiful.

Doom's pistol is nothing but a stopgap, you basically never ever use it if you have anything better.
Whittling down a Revenant's health with the pistol is a chore. In fact, fighting ANYTHING with Doom's pistol isn't fun.

Quake's shotgun is kind of a stopgap too, but it has good range with common ammo, and it actually doesn't do terrible damage, just being weaker than everything else.
Fighting an Ogre with the shotgun on the contrary doesn't take long, and the shotgun is actually useful for taking out ogres and other longer ranged nuisances at a distance.
Hell, if you want to, you can even take out a Shambler with the base shotgun in a few situations, and this sounds tedious (it's certainly not an expedient method), but it doesn't actually take THAT long given the fairly fast rate of fire, and how you're likely to hit with most pellets even at distance.

I'd say the pistol's a good way to get the player into the "mooD" of Doom, but that only works if the very first level is somewhat built around it (at least the beginning of the level).

It does decent damage against the former humans in the armor room on E1M1 (depending if you play on certain difficulties of course), and it kills them fairly quickly before you get the shotgun. Same thing with MAP01, it gets the player engaged by having them think on their feet by starting with the weakest weapon against the weakest enemies, as long as said weapon is at least powerful enough to take them down.

But then again that's prolly the philosophy of most FPS games in general.

Hexen's combat is way better than Heretic's. You wanna talk about bullet sponges? The basic Imp equivalent in Heretic (Undead Warrior) takes 4-5 crossbow blasts to kill. In Hexen you can kill most enemies in 1 or 2 shots of your 3rd weapon.

Beat both expansions to Shadow Warrior, Twin Dragon and Wanton Destruction. TD was definitely better. WD just didnt feel like Shadow Warrior - too many generic city levels and cramped, frustrating encounters. Plus some ugly enemy reskins and terrible voice clips. Alien Bastards is fun and it's weird how there's three arachno/brain enemies.
Something that bugs me about mods like these is when enemies are changed visually to fit the theme but the likes of Mancubi, Revenants and HK's still look demonic/unchanged (Besides maybe color palette) so they stick out like a sore thumb.

You could if you use the ripped versions by youreviltwin, if you can still find it, otherwise I think the Generations installer just hard loads the versions for you (Barney's arms in Blue-Shift, Adrian's arms in Opposing Force), and they can't really be overriden, and the Steam version has them where you toggle them in the options, and they'll override whatever else is there, be it the stock models or whatever you've added manually.

So, what if I told you a friend of mine managed to create a fusion of Starfox 64 and Ace Combat...

in GZDoom?
I've been helping him here and there with various things, but he's really doing the work because every time he updates it, it becomes almost an order of magnitude better than the previous version and he's just cranking these out every couple of days.

What do you guys think? Normally you'd think this would be better suited to /aceg/ but considering what it's running in, I figured I'd try here first.

Oh, and it's an IWAD with all original materials so it's standalone. We're hoping you guys can find some of the weirder bugs that might be buried in there, especially with all the new AI updates lately.

Anyway, what >>5731961 said already hits the mark. Slaughter is largely made by mappers who have played Doom ad nauseam, to the point where the traditional mechanics bore them and the only entertainment value they can get out of the game is by exploiting the system in an extreme manner. At that point what you're playing becomes a separate "meta" game (could almost be considered bullet hell), and that's not the genre most people came for.
I think that's why so many folks chafe at Hideous Destructor--aside from the steep (and arguably unintuitive) learning curve, the mod is a super sharp departure from Doom's simple-to-control high-speed power-fantasy thrill ride.
