Whats the best device for handheld emulation? I want to be able to emulate up to Playstation games, but the only handheld I've seen which has both the specs and appropriate control scheme seems to be the Pandora, and I'm put off by the steep price.

I'm thinking a decent controller accessory for my smartphone might work, but the only one that I've found, the iControlPad, isn't onsale any more.

>> No.572120

High end android phone with pocket bluetooth controller/gamepad.

Pandora is overpriced and shit, and you won't be able to get it for months even after you buy it.

>> No.572149

I recently went through all this myself, OP. Seriously considered getting the jxd s7300 - it seems like it really does have everything I wanted, but I had such serious suspicions about the build quality that I had to pass.

In my research I figured that the most important thing would be compatibility and buttons - to really have a good emulation device, you'll need triggers. I found almost nothing with two triggers.

To date I think the best solution is still probably a modded PSP - but it's now a dead platform without much development being done, so what you have now will be the last new & exciting thing you get.

I finally just went with a Nexus 10... ZERO buttons, and perhaps I will pay for that, but if it comes down to it I will be able to come up with some sort of bluetooth controller solution.

To you guys who emulate on a tablet/phone with a controller - what is your physical strategy in playing the game? Do you ahve the device situated on a stand at a desk while you hold the controller in your hands?

I can't imagine laying back with a tablet propped on your knees or something...

>> No.572157

Used cheap PSP with cfw is great for anything up to PSX/GBA (except SNES). And you can usually get a decent one for less than 10% the cost of the Pandora, so if it didn't fit your needs, you aren't out much.

Surely the lack of a second analog stick on a PSP causes problems in some games?

I use an S7300, pretty decent, but if you're looking for something to fit in a pocket look elsewhere. It's actually just an android tablet with buttons.

iControlPads and associated controllers are great for phones, I'd sell you mine but I'm a little too lazy for that.

PSP would be great if you don't mind N64 and SNES emulation being bad.

got myself a cheap sony xperia play to play some emus. works pretty good for me. never played on my psp and wiz since. but that's just me.

The pandora is worth every penny. I am posting from mine right now.

>> No.572767

i just bought a 1ghz pandora OP.

i havent tried any other modern handhelds so i cant make comparisons/pass judgment on them.

the pandora, however, is fucking awesome. PSX emulation, especially, is flawless and surprised me. n64 isn't great but i havent played with it much (it just came in the mail last week and i was pretty busy all weekend). SNES is also near-perfect.

the battery is truly 10+ hours, and the best part is that it really is like a miniature laptop. i travel a lot for work so being able to play games & check email, do spreadsheets and whatnot is all just a bonus on top of the great emulation.

$600 is steep, yes, but very worth it in my opinion.

my pandora was on backorder for 9 days and that was only because of the reseller.

dont listen to this clown OP, though if you dont mind carrying around a controller i guess the phone will suffice (lol)

Again, if you do end up getting it, get in from Willgoo. 6 month warranty means you can just send it back if there's anything wrong with it.

I got one and I'm extremely happy with it, price and usability are great.

Is the JXD really that comfortable? The layout doesn't look that good. It's pretty much an android device with controls, right? How big is the screen?

>> No.572918

>>572897
7 inch screen. The controls are pretty nice as long as you don't need to use R2 or L2. And yeah, it runs on Android 4.1 and has access to the google play and all that jazz.

>> No.572993

You mean use custom firmware? Of course, in fact the default firmware is garbage and I tell everyone wanted an S7300 to always swap out for something like NCCE Community firmware immediately. The things come rooted already, so it is super easy to install new firmware on them.

And the screen is quite nice for reading shit on them, I flip it vertical and I can read ebooks just fine.

By rom I meant the android's rom by the way.

I've used a PSP for a while, but I recently bought a JXD S7300 and I'm enjoying it so far. It's a shame I can't use both analogs and the D-pad at the same time, but that means I'm only really missing out on a couple PS1 games and the N64, and I couldn't give a shit about the N64.

Fair warning, if you get an S7300, put the NCCE custom firmware on it, the stock emulators and firmware are terrible.

Five star post, son.

Bitches be hatin' on this machine, but I too have one and its fuckin' boss. Also use it for SNES, MegaDrive, GBA and MAME emulation, not to mention the games that actually came with it.

It even has a PSP emulator available too, not to mention its actually got proper fucking controls built-in.

I uploaded the one I used. It also includes the plugin for your PSP. As I'm also running 64-bit Win7, it should work for you. If it doesn't, then we'd have to pinpoint what you didn't do (or maybe what you did do, but done wrong) or install when it came to you trying it out before you posted here.

so what exactly do i do with this again? which file do i move where on my psp, and then how do i make it run? the site i had used before to try and figure it out only had instructions for 32 bit windows os.

>> No.574875

The prx file goes into the seplugins folder on your PSP. The rest stays in its own folder like any other program's stuff.
In your seplugins folder, there should be a game.txt.
Open that up and add the line
ms0:/filepath to the plugin in said folder 1

For example:
ms0:/seplugins/RemoteJoyLite.prx 1

Then hold R on your PSP and turn it on to boot it into Recovery Mode. In that mode, check your plugins and make sure the RemoteJoyLite one is enabled, then restart the PSP. Load a game you want to test, then connect your PSP via usb. Then start RemoteJoyLite_en.exe.

If you don't get a picture feed, then something went wrong when you were originally trying to install it. Note that you will not get audio. Only video. For audio, you'll need a male-to-male audio cable to plug your PSP into your PC's Line-In.

i don't have a seplugins folder on my psp...where should i make one and what exactly do i call it?

>> No.574910

>>574884
Wait a sec, does your PSP even have custom firmware on it? But to answer your question, it goes in the root, and is literally just called seplugins.

If you don't have CFW on your PSP, you're going to have spend some time at GBATemp, as you've got shit to learn.

>> No.574938

>>574910

alright, i did all that, made sure the plug in was enabled (i copied your ms0:/seplugins/RemoteJoyLite.prx 1 line into game.txt) and then i started up a game, plugged in the cable and started remote joy lite. it said it was installing the drivers, but then it said that failed...not sure what to do.

I had a 1000 from launch that saw use off and on over the years. It was on its last legs (I had to open it up and do some soldering to get it to charge) and weighs more than a handheld should these days, so I picked a Go up on a lark. Been using it to revisit PSX titles and have been supremely happy with it.

Any JXD or Yinlips device. I own an S5110 and an S7300 and they both work great, good build quality and they run smoothly too. If you're looking for something pocketable they have the 4.3" models too. Any Android/iPhone will get the job done as well. I'm hearing the GCW Zero is pretty good but I've never tried it and I'm not as familiar with naked Linux, but some people prefer it over Android.
