The new OST kills the tone of the original and while the colored lighting is sometimes nice looking I feel it changes the look of the game a bit too radically as well as being too dark a lot of the time.

It was a very nice play on the original and thus a good addon to Doom's legacy.
Albeit the colored lighting is nice the 4bit textures are not. The slower frame rate paired with the pretty cool music gives it more of a horror movie feel. It was an absolute blast in coop - we were hooked to the screen for hours on end.

Gun sounds were GOD tier when compared to the original
Ambient noise & lighting was also good

Also OP it was praised for having the best frame rate at the time, having the most levels of any port at the time, and it controls very well. The OST is the cherry on top, the PC version has great tracks but when you are stuck on a level, hearing the same midi for thirty minutes gets more tiring than the ambient tracks on loop.

Doom 64 is good and all, but in the end of the day, I'd stick with PSX Doom, which keeps the original aesthetics plus colored lighting, has the same sounds, same OST but with higher quality, and has more monster types than D64.

Doom PSX was my first Doom, so I like the weapon sounds. The chaingun and plasma gun are pure upgrades, the rest are debatable. The music for the PC version suits a jacked up marine ripping and tearing perfectly, but as PSX Doom goes more atmospheric with the lighting I think the same goes for the music. I love the theme music the PS1 version has though, the title and episode ends both have a version. And damn, the episode ends having that voiceover was pure kino. Your total inability to savescum in the PS version was probably a bonus, but I feel less ongoing monster ai/no archviles/easier chaingunners make for an easier game.

Having played PC Doom I know which I'd rather play today but there's a mod to have the PS version assets, lighting and level data (there are changes based on RAM usage, some levels changed/added, that sort of thing). The Doom 64 mod does the same for that game too, but it is very much its own game.

All things considered, it's actually a pretty great port. I think a lot of people overstate the horror aspect of the port because they played it when they were kids and kind of sucked balls at it. If you know your Doom maps well, you can kill about as fast as the PC version and the spooky music feels like it clashes with the very much not vulnerable gameplay.

This is legit the best version of Doom. Especially a refreshing change after playing Doom 1 and 2 on PC, then playing this to see the major differences. Out of the vanilla campaigns; this is my favorite way to play them.
