I was probably still playing on my C64 or Amiga, since these were the only machines I had at the time (and also much later since to this day I never owned a windows PC). It could've been that I already had a Sega GameGear back then, but I hardly played on it anyway, since the games were too expensive and most games on the home computers where better and more complex anyway (and of course also cheaper).

WebM kinda relevant. That's the first game I played on my C64. Despite it's from '87 I played it around '91 or '92 when I got my first computer (the C64), not counting the east german home computers (mostly KC85) that I used in school or the only east german arcade machine "Polyplay" that I played in the late 80's.

AFAIK most games were just hobbyist, school and academic projects. Some got published later in packs, but usually they were copied around and shared. Some programs even were broadcasted via radio. Beside the Polyplay Arcade I doubt that there were any actual commercial games made in the GDR. That Polyplay Arcade you could usually find in youth camps or at occasion when the GDR celebrated something. And in terms of games, as far as I remember most of them were clones of western games like Sokoban, Boulder Dash, countless Lode Runner and Pac Man clones (the later called "Hase und Wolf" (hare and wolf) here after a russian cartoon going by the name of "No Pogodi")
https://youtu.be/zTG6g-ffjco

Many of the original academic or games from school projects were usually simple Quiz games with a heavy socialist and communist edge written in Basic.
https://youtu.be/zTG6g-ffjco

I still remember getting into trouble by a teacher (they thought they lost me) since I stayed to long at the KC85 stands and the Polyplay machines at the last convention of east german youth organizations in 1988.

Some schools had stands with those typical KC85 computers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KC_85
(but the other east german Robotron computers like the older Z 9001 too) showing of their work (and of course playing games). On a sidenote. most of the east german computers (and Polyplay as well as some russian computers) used an unlicensed Z80 clone as main processor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U880

At one of the occasions at that convention I even unintentionally met our first lady (a really despicable old hag) who was visiting one of the events.

Also even in east germany some people somehow managed to score a C64 somehow (maybe an Amiga too?). But this usually did cost lots of money and you needed some connections to get one (or smuggle it). I wasn't one of them of course. But I guess to get disk drives was equally hard. But the prizes for a pack of 5 1/4" floppies were equally absurd anyway.

The whole set of KC85's at my school (not all were working btw.) only used tape decks, only the teachers computer had a floppy drive.

My family could never afford the latest system right away so I was probably still playing some end of the generation SNES games like one of the Donkey Kong Country games or Super Mario RPG.

I finally got an N64 and a PS1 a couple years later because our family would do a bowling league every year and at the end you'd get a video game system and a couple games. I hated bowling, but the day that fucking league finished up and I got a new console made it worthwhile.

What I mean is that everyone ITT is droping names of a bunch of game of the year candidates, as if that's all that existed, when the reality is that most gamers back then were more likely playing some random shit.

I didn't even get FFVII until 1999, personally. In 1997, I had a Genesis with 5 games, 2 of which were huge names, an SNES with 4 games, 2 of which were big and a PSX with the 2 "mid card" games I mentioned in my first post. I didn't even get Tomb Raider until january 1998, lol.

I know modern gaming is a huge pissing contest that's all about playing the most popular games and acting like everything else is unplayable trash, but that ain't what it was in '97. Most of us were kids who had a couple games and barely half of witch were AAA, GOTY award fodder. But we loved what we had.

That's what most people cared about, though.
>huge pissing contest that's all about playing the most popular games and acting like everything else is unplayable trash
The only difference in the 90s is that you didn't see the pissing contest because nobody gave a shit about the unplayable trash. Here's what would happen in the 90s. You'd go to the rental store, and there would often be a deal (blockbuster was rent 2 get 3rd free, other store was 1+1). So you'd rent 3 games for the weekend, one big name and then two others to try out. You'd spend 90% of the time playing the big name game then 5 minutes trying out the other two. Every so often your bonus rental would be more fun and memorable than the big name, but not usually. (And even then, practically speaking those surprise fun games wound up being semi-big names like Actraiser)
>I didn't even get FFVII until 1999, personally
Sure it's true that games remained popular for a few years. But still, in 1997 I was old enough to have my own money, follow news online, and buy my own games. I definitely played FF7 in 1997. I also remember buying Final Fantasy Tactics in January 1998 then purposefully leaving my Playstation home when I went back to school for the spring semester, and not being able to play it.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I didn't get a Gameboy until the Pocket released in 96. Pokemon came out a year or so after moved, but I very clearly remember talking to a friend about LA before that. One day out of the fucking blue I asked him if he knew the game, since I was stuck, and to my amazement he turned out to be a huge Zelda nerd. We were sorta-kinda friends after that and he'd always go to me for Pokemon advice once that game came out. The next year, Columbine happened and our school became VERY trigger-happy about finding reasons to expel kids who might shoot up the school, so I ended up getting transferred to a school for juvenile delinquents. Six months later, a teacher asked me to show a new student around. It was the very same kid, who they also found an excuse to expel. After that, we were inseparable (although mainly because the other kids in school were only interested in rap music, other than the one other nerd who coincidentally came from our school too. I couldn't stand him though).

Ah, Link's Awakening. I don't think I'd have had such a good friend without you.

1997 was a good year for gaming but not a great year because while 3d gaming was improving, 16 bit stuff was gone while the previous year you still had some decent 16 bit games. It was also still the for raycasted doom like games. It was an ok year but a little boring compared to the 2 previous, 1998 was when it really took off.

Game I remember from around that time

daggerfall
alien carnage
build engine games
warcraft 2
zoop - weird puzzle game
quake multi

Similar experience here. At the time, I had only gotten a SNES a couple months prior, except it was because vidya is prohibitively expensive in my country and it was (is?) common to be a generation behind. Pretty sure SMW was the only game I had for a while, and I didn't play on the PC yet, so...

A few years down, the deluge of retro collections no doubt hit home with him. I really liked the C64 collection by Activision that they put out on Win95.

As for the OP, my game being played was probably Mario Kart 64 or Yoshi's Story, assuming my older brother let me play. For all I know I may have been watching him play Goldeneye.

Looking back on it, I was in grade school and went to nursery school after regular hours, since my parents both worked at the time, and I pretty well remember drawing pictures in crayon of scenes from goldeneye. I wonder now if the teachers thought something was wrong with me. Chances are better, however, that they just saw it all the time. Not like kids in the 80s weren't watching movies far more graphic than what I was seeing in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if grade schoolers were drawing robocop shooting dudes in the dick just like I was drawing bond shooting russians.

It has happened so often that people argue about what year had more great releases.

Our metric of what is shit or not has also changed. Even the smallest bit of stink on a game is unacceptable.

Name one year in the last decade that had 5 mega hits in the same year, then. FF7, Tekken 3, Starfox 64, and SOTN are seen by many as the best games in their respective series, not even just amazing games.

Alot of games now are broken at release and fixed with patches. You won't even get the full game until 1 year later and all the DLC is released.

You're probably just baiting, though, but the point still needs to be made.

I didn't have a PS1 and my mom was making me hold out another Christmas until she bought me an N64, so probably random SNES and Genesis games. Earthworm Jim 2 was a favorite, as well Final Fight, Clay Fighter and Yoshi's Island. I only owned Sonic 2 and Sonic 3D Blast, so I remember renting Sonic 3 and borrowing & Knuckles from my neighbor to play S3&K. Was playing Mario 64, Turok, Goldeneye and Star Fox whenever I visited my N64 friends' houses, and Tomb Raider, GTA, and Twisted Metal at my PS1 friend's. On PC I was probably still rocking Doom and Incredible Machine, as well as a low-effort NASCAR racing DOS game by Papyrus that let you custom draw paintjobs for your cars, which was fun as fuck. Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego was pretty entertaining and is the reason I still know the layout and capitals of every state. Oh. And MOTHERFUCKING LEGO ISLAND, holy shit. It ran pretty poorly on my family PC, and even worse on the hand-me-down toaster I had in my bedroom, but goddam if I still didn't put hours upon hours into it.

Fuck. Now I'm just depressed because you've forced me to realize how much more actual gaming I was doing when I was 11 years old, even though I owned WAY fewer games and didn't have an income.

I still played my NES all through highschool so that was kind of lame. I had all the expected first party games and some third party trash I fondly remember

I lived in the hills so it was a miracle we even had the PC we did. In college my roomate had a nice accelerated one that played return to castle wolfenstein real nice with fast internet.

You're absolutely right that the floor has been raised, but I would also argue that the ceiling has lowered. All the games mentioned by the guy you quoted are mind-meltingly good (possibly excepting Tekken 3, which I haven't played), and they don't even really scratch the surface of the games released that year. Meanwhile, looking at 2018, there really weren't that many titles that I would consider in the same league. You've definitely got some truly awesome games like Spider-man or Smash Ultimate, but they stand pretty much alone in a sea of slightly-better-than-mediocrity.

Basically, gaming back then had way lower lows, but it also had way higher and more frequent highs.

It's less about "investment" and more that nintendo stuff just doesn't go cheap as quickly, and is more prone to becoming retrobait over time. Might as well pay MSRP and get it brand-new and complete vs. waiting years to often pay inflated "retro" prices for just cart-only stuff. N64 and GC are a good example, they are currently in the middle of their "nostalgia bubble" where their stuff sits high in price, while their contemporaries from other makers are much cheaper, save for Saturn, which had a host of other factors making it expensive. Put another way, are you gonna tell me that PS2 is more expensive to buy for than Gamecube right now?
