Let's talk about the TurboGrafx-CD, BY FAR the most heavily supported console hardware add-on ever and the very first CD-ROM based home video game console hardware. It's mostly famous for Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, but it had hundreds of other games. Supposedly something like half of all TG-16 games (between American and Japanese combined) were CD releases.

Favorite games? General thoughts? Anybody own one of these things?

Absolutely not, especially considering a NGCD is barely less expensive than an AES. The load times are a constant pain, and you don't get Garou or Samurai Shodown V Special. The only upsides to the NGCD are being able to burn your own discs, and use standard s-video cables.

Spend the extra $50-100 on an AES instead. Even better, go with a PCE DUO-R, they're the most reliable model and cost about the same as a NGCD, but with way more games. The only issue I have with mine is composite-only unless you mod it.

Only on ebay champ. I was hoarding them in hopes that guy would come through with his RAM upgrade and they'd b worth something. He didn't and they're not. And now that we have a decent flash cart it's unlikely they ever will. Never paid more than $15.

>>5718061
Yes. The chinkshit on ali works well. And works with multicarts, which has been a problem with adapters in the past. Unless you're somehow poor and already have an AES your best bet is still an MVS.

My opinion is that it's a platform that had so much promise, but so much shovelware and dissipointment.

The highs are sky high, but rare. The lows are abysmal and numerous. But 90% of the total pc engine library (standard and CD add on alike) is just mediocre junk. And I say this after trying almost 200 different games.

I know this opinion won't be received well here, but it is what it is.

I will say that a lot of games look better than similar SNES games, but looks ain't everything.

90? that's being far too generous. the entire library is garbage. hard to blame the developers though, as the hardware they had to work with was a total joke.

As someone who owned a TG-16 growing up and badly wanted this but never got it, the real problem with both this and the Sega CD was the whole add-on concept was off-putting to consumers. People didn't want to buy their consoles in installments.

They somehow thought it would seem less costly to allowing you to upgrade your existing console than just sell you an entirely new one but the CD add-ons cost as much as the original console or more anyway so it hardly seemed like a bargain. And since not everybody adopted the add-on there was this weird transitional stage where they were still trying to sell the old consoles but all the cool new games were being designed for the add-ons, which again, a lot of people didn't have. So they basically created two separate console generations within a single console, which is a terrible thing from a marketing and development standpoint. Like, if you put all your efforts into the new CD add-on, you're basically making it mandatory, but first people have to buy the old console, which is a hard sell since you've essentially abandoned it. This kind of half-in half-out shit kills consumer confidence, as Sega especially would come to learn.

If they'd just skipped the add-on phase, gone 100% into next gen and marketed the duo as a successor with backwards compatibility it would have seemed like a much sweeter deal.

I don't understand why they can't just put Japanese and English versions of every game that was released on both regions. I can sort of see why for games that were licensed in one region, like GUNHED, New Adventure Island and J.J. & Jeff, but there's no reason they couldn't fit PC Genjin 1-3 and the Bonk trilogy at the same time.

Basically the Super CD-ROM^2 is an addon whic like the TurboDuo, where the system 3.0 card is not necessary as it is built in, while the TurboGrafx-16 and PC=Engine will need the upgrade card to play Super CDs. The categories of RAM needed are based on the upgrade card used with the CD-ROM
-CD-ROM^2
-Super CD-ROM^2
-Arcade CD

Off the top of my head, there's the Ys games, Legend of Heroes games, Emerald Dragon, Cosmic Fantasy games, Exile games, Far East of Eden games, etc. There quite a variety of genres represented on the system, I even can think of a few fighting games I liked on it.

Odd question but, since the PC-Engine had an 8 bit CPU, does that mean that everything that could be attempted on the PC-E could potentially be attempted on the NES?

Could a game like Rondo of Blood be possible on the NES minus the CD music and graphics were toned down to be 8bit and for this example, the cart had the capacity of a CD?

How exactly does the 8bit cpu limit the PC-E, and by extension the CD addon?

>> No.5746802

>>5746480

the 8-bit CPU means it can only deal with a 8-bits (256 values) of information with any instruction. It's hard to quantify exactly how much it limited games because you can't really know how much 16-bit math a game might be doing under the hood.

In any case, the CPU runs at 4x the clock speed of the NES, has extra instructions to make certain things faster, it has 4x the work ram and 32x the video ram. It's a huge jump in power even if it's still 8-bit technically.

The more I learn about the software about the PC Engine, the more I'm excited for the Mini. Only learned about it recently, but the TG-CD was everything I wanted games to be as a kid, but instead I had to play shit like The 7th Guest and other crummy lookin' FMV games.

It's a real mystery to me that people aren't more excited by the PC Engine Mini. Maybe it's games are too hardcore for normies who think retro gaming means sticking Mario stickers on their Xbox 360 or maybe it's the age-old stigma of it being the perverts console.

>> No.5747003

PC Engine CD is pure kino but it's unfortunate that the ratio of god tier to meh/shit is not as great as the SNES and Genesis. This is a fact.
PCE CD is good for what it is though, and it's the only console I'm literally excited to have real games/hardware AND to play them until they're fully enjoyed. I personally like the selection of shooters, and maybe one day I'll finally learn japanese to play the great RPGs that can rival their Sufami counterparts.

>Maybe it's games are too hardcore for normies
I'd describe the games more as not very good than hardcore. I want to like the PC-E and CD; I've got a CoreGrafx and l love the look and formfactor of the console and cards, but I can never find anything new to play on it that isn't just alright. Rondo's top notch, Dragon's Trap is great, and Final Match is the best tennis game ever made, but I think that's it. There are some alright shooters, but I'd always rather play something like Layer Section, Einhander, or Battle Garegga. Ninja Spirit sucks, Splatterhouse sucks, Legendary Axe sucks, Gradius and R-Type are better on other platforms. Why anyone cares about playing digital pinball is a mystery. The of Thunder games aren't great--though the Blade series is alright. And I think that Ys and Neutopia are overrated, especially when games like Terranigma and Zelda exist.

I bought one partly on the strength of Dragon's Trap, its aesthetic, and online praise and it's been a real disappointment.

I dunno if any of the releases have it written in Roman letters on the box, but it's clearly meant to be a parody of Dragon Quest, with two words, Bodycon Quest.

Pic related is the Famicom version box, with the phrase 究極のボディコンパロディ! ("The ultimate bodycon parody!") written on the right side.

Here's a Japanese Youtube account that splits the title into the two words:
