This couldn't be further from what I feel whenever I saw it. Why? Because you can't skip it. Gameover screens are supposed to be just that. They tried too hard with this one. Everyone knows the game is about time travel and saving the future and whatnot so seeing it shoved in your face is almost like the gaming trying to suck its own dick. Its pathetic on square's part imo.

Right, and that's why "the future refused to change" is such a hopeless sentiment. It's not just that you lost or got killed, it's that time itself stands against you and everything you've done up to that point has meant absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. It invokes this feeling that maybe you were never actually changing anything in the first place and all your galavanting through time was always part of the plan and Lavos destroys everything regardless. Maybe you're destined to never win. That's also why it makes winning feel so good, because you have literally defied fate and time itself.

honestly I know what youre trying to say but personally I think once again its the game trying to be too attached to itself and theres a level of corny to it that you just perfectly expressed by 'feeling' its impact as implied in your post. its literally a gameover screen that tries so hard for lavos to be 'teh destroyer !1!!' but lavos isn't even much of a villain. hes just a plot device with barely any development. its not even like your time travelling through out the game means anything or gets you 'closer' or 'nearer' to your objective. literally the entire game can be summed up in:
>we need the epoch to travel to the time that lavos is still not erupted so we can stop him
>okay but we have to grind first so lets go to all these different time periods
ive never been one to agree that jrpgs are boring grind fests and i enjoy chrono trigger as much as the next fan but i gotta say after realizing alot of it, the ct storyline is honestly shit. even tales of phantasia and star ocean did time travel better then this game.

Chrono Trigger is a simple game for 10 year olds about time travel and the main objective is to save the future from a doomsday event. The game over screen is a short, simple animation that reinforces the premise and theme of the game. I really don't know how fucking far up your own pseudo-intellectual asshole one must be to criticize CT's game over screen as being "too attached to itself." fucking lol
