The "enter pipe" sound is exactly the same as the "mario hurt" sound.

Are you sure? The game does feel kind of rushed. Especially since there are a handful of assets that don't really match the art style of the rest of the game. The rhino enemies and some of the Koopalings are the worst examples.

I'm sure a "rushed" game wouldn't have so many secrets, even a secret world within a secret world.
I believe the whole "lol it was rushed!11" journo clickbait thing was because Shiggers once said that he wanted to add more things but couldn't, but that's typical Miyamoto, he's never 100% satisfied and always has to left out ideas, it has happened since SMB1 at least.
>assets that don't really match the art style of the rest of the game. The rhino enemies and some of the Koopalings are the worst examples.
I don't get it, what about the rhino enemies and koopalings "don't match" the artstyle of the game? also, art style would have nothing to do with the game being rushed anyway. A rushed game would be short and have little content. SMW is overwhelming with the amount of content it has. People often point out how SMB3 is more variated because of the different world themes, but in reality, outside of maybe world 2 which is egyptian-themed, the rest of the worlds all share assets, it's always Athletic, Underground, Underwater, Fortress and Flying Ship. In SMW, on top of the classic athletic/underground/underwater/castle staples of SMB series they added ghost houses as well.

Take one glance at this and it's immediately obvious Wendy and Lemmy are working off a completely visual style than the other Koopalings. Also compare the boss rhino dinosaurs to the similar enemies who walk around the overworld. It feels like they decided to overhaul the art style at some point and never got around to updating some of the sprites.

>> No.5713126

>>5712980
That's because lemmy and wendy have a different boss room where they come out of pipes, but they still look like koopalings to me. If anything, Ludwig was the one who stood out the most due to having a unique boss fight (the others are all paired: lava pit moving platform, shrinking room and pipes) but still I think they all look fine.
Reznors also look fine, they are similar to dino rhinos, but like a different species of dinosaur. Don't see the issue or how any of this makes the game rushed.

It was mostly that Japanese Mario 2 wasn't impressive by the time it would have shipped in the U.S.

Being essentially a level pack, it was fine at disk system prices, but not worth buying on a $50 (in 80s dollars) cartridge when most other NES games had gotten much bigger thanks to MMCs.

Can you really not tell at a glance that Wendy and Lemmy have much, much bolder outlines than the others? Look at the top-right Lemmy sprite in particular, since its pose is similar to the others. Note that every major part of his body is separated by an outline. On the other Koopa Kids, outlines are just a darker shade of the color they're surrounding, sometimes just outright not having one.

You can see it on the Renzor vs the Dino Rhinos, too. The Renzors have the thick, cartoony outline style, while the Dino Rhinos use the "outline color matches the inner color" thing. Even Mario himself is the later, while the vast, vast majority of other things in the game are the former. It feels like the no-outline sprites were drawn up much earlier than the others, but they never got around to updating them.

>people often point out how SMB3 is more variated because of the different world themes, but in reality, outside of maybe world 2 which is egyptian-themed, the rest of the worlds all share assets, it's always Athletic, Underground, Underwater, Fortress and Flying Ship
you forgot about giant and ice world, they both have unique assets, pipe world has some too but only like 1/3. Bowsers castle is also mostly made from unique tiles too and thats just one level.

In mario world they added ghost houses, and forest/sky but latter two are really underused, the sky tileset is only used by two-three short sub-areas? And there is less than five levels with forest tileset(theres also only five ghost houses too, +1 if you count sunken ship). Theres also the switch palace tileset. But for the most game you see the same tileset used for most for the normal levels, but with some palette swaps and different backgrounds.

Mario 3 has
>two different athletic
>desert theme
>castle
>ice theme
>air ships
>giant
>pipe/muncher
>bowsers castle

mario world has
>athletic
>ghost house
>starry sky, mushroom platforms/night
>underground
>castle
>forest
>switch palace
>sky

So even counting underused switch palace and sky themes, and not counting palette swaps(so I dont count dark world in smb3 either) smb3 does clearly have more variety and world themes. And this comparison is really biased towards for SMW because snes has more colors, one extra layer so they can have more backgrounds, and much more space for graphics/assets too. Another thing about SMW is that they are really inconsistent with if sprites should have black outline or not, shading differs from sprite to sprite and some dont have anything at all(bob-ombs are flat black). SMW also uses 3bpp graphics(7 colors) when they could have used 4bpp(15 colors) instead(like all SMW hacks do) so it doesn't even take full advantage of snes hardware.

Maybe it's just because of the boss room they're in, as I said. IIRC, the other Koopalings all appear in rooms that have a black background, while Lemmy and Wendy's rooms do have a background.

Same in SMW actually. Some assets only appear there, pic related.
