I've been considering buying the JP edition to rescan just so I can get a better pic of this cover. I think my best bet is to buy the JP strategy guide since the cover probably holds up. However if I buy a boxed set of the game, I could also scan the manual. Decisions. If I knew someone in Japan I could just ask them to find a copy of the guide in good condition for me to scan and clean.

Here's a first draft at a vertical universal case cover. I leveled the black and simply filled in the background curtain or whatever it was since it didn't look too good anyway. The tagline on the back is from the old JP Perfect Dark site. The logo is too, but it's low-quality so I had to upscale and filter it a bit. Source image is still crummy under scrutiny but it might look decent if you print it out on glossy paper and put it in a box.

The original Japanese Arc Hound/Contra Force art was going to have a badass, but tastefully reserved, action movie poster look (bottom right), but the American one looks like art for a line of edgy action figures marketed to tweens whose parents just don't understand. Don't get me wrong, they both look good, but it is amusing to see marketing's perception of the US vs the JP market.

One of the most striking, distinctive covers of all time, definitely among the best IMO. I wonder if someone really got an increased chance of developing cancer just so the art could be made, that's dedication lol

Unrelated, but does anyone else get bummed out that we don't really have game worlds like the ones depicted in many of these covers, even now? Especially today, that they could be more or less replicated, but smaller titles don't have the resources and more expensive ones can't take the risk of having a style too, well, stylized...

Both covers have something in common: they both tell a story without expressing any movement. The usual covers that tell a story have the protagonists surrounded by enemies or walking through a dungeon. Maybe a spaceship flying through the space.
In this two covers you wonder what happened before and what is going to happen next.

Are there more covers like these?

I was always kinda meh about this boxart, but I kinda appreciate how the highway where Riki and Kyoko are posing blends-in with the harbor sunset where Kunio and Misako are standing on. Kunio and Misako still look kinda weird next to each other though (like they just took clip arts of the characters pasted them next to each other).

The Double Dragon II flyer/boxart will always be the most iconic representation of the series for me. The Japanese version of Double Dragon 3 for the arcades and 1 on the Game Boy used the same artist, but for some reason they went for lame westernized covers for the US versions.

This is absolute irrefutable truth. The summed up the whole series with that 1 image. One of the most instantly recognizable images for any game from that era.

I like how the artist even kept Billy and Jimmy Lee's original arcade colors instead of the switched style they went with the console games. Most of the promotional art for the series in Japan made Billy Lee look like a poor man's Kenshiro and I never cared much for the Karate Kid headbands they wore for most of the western art.

The Game Boy version of Double Dragon in Japan used the same artist and this is the artwork she came up with.

I'll tell you what. I have a scanner, and I also like that image. If you're willing to pay $16~$25 for the soundtrack + international shipping to the US, which has this image on the cover (clean I might add), I will scan it in a very high resolution and clean it, and you can print off your own poster. It'll probably be cheaper than $50 anyway. Some of the risk comes from the fact that I have no way of knowing what condition the OST cover is in, but it looks to be in a jewel case so it can't be that bad. Drop an email if you're interested in putting your faith in a random person. It's a bit cheaper on Yahoo Auctions, however that ends in a day and it might turn into a gay bidding war or something. Plus I can rip the OST if it hasn't already been ripped.
