What are some classic games featuring art and/or designs by big name artists?

Bonus points for a)Western games (though animu is welcome and b)In-game art and not just packaging stuff

I think you will find more examples of both in-game and cover art being done by the same artist in japanese games than in western ones. Pic related probably being the most obvious example that is not a jrpg.

There is a japanese only silent hill esqe horrorgame for the ps1. Its designed by hr. Giger, the man who designed the alien movies. I dont know much about it but since its synchronised in german, which im native in, ill probably buy a copy sooner or later to try out

Too bad Bisley sperged out with utterly wrong anatomy, otherwise very cool art.

This is probably the most ridiculous example.
This Tetris logo was designed by Roger Dean, famous for his fantasy landscape artwork featured on progressive rock albums. The logo itself appears in several /vr/ compliant games like Magical Tetris Challenge, The New Tetris, and The Next Tetris.
Roger Dean also provided several cover artworks for Psygnosis, but I believe that the Tetris logo is his only ingame graphics contribution.

Let's just get Yoshitaka Amano out of the way, though I don't think enough people realize how big of a name he already was before Squaresoft. The dude was an accomplished character designer and animator for well-known anime for decades (already starting his career at age 14), so that brought some nerd prestige to FF at the time.

Peruvian fantasy painter Boris Vallejo, known for painting a ton of giant sweaty half naked barbarian people and kick-ass 80s movie posters, was commissioned to do a few early Sega covers of Westernized releases as well. Also has a hot ex-bodybuilder wife who collaborates with most of his work.

He also did the designs (and movie for) Namco’s Mirai Ninja. That, and the posters for Genpei Toumaden and Bravoman.

Yeah, she did quite a few covers by herself. Pic related may be the most famous.

Giger didn't create anything for Dark Seed, all he did was authorize the devs to copy-paste his art to create their game.

For Japanese games:

An obvious one is the Dragon Quest series with Akira Toriyama. And Chrono Trigger.

Quake 3 featured a couple character designs by Simon Bisley. and when I say "by", I mean... well I don't think they actually gave him money, or TOLD him they were using the designs, they just kinda went ahead and did how id did.

Dude always does that. In arelated note, The Biz had a sort of scandal once for putting subliminal private parts on Lobo's elbow once. He says he didn't do it, but if you look at it it's pretty suspect. Might've been an unconscious Fruedian slip thing.
