This post illustrates the sad state of /vr/ these days
We've been inundated by youngling weebs

I like the older pinball machines where the score only goes to the thousands
I don't dig score inflation in mechanical amusements, or level inflation in rpgs

Yes. These to me are the best pinball tables. Nothing beats an actual table, of course, but Zaccharia Pinball on Steam has a good number of old, good table recreations, and they're fun.

Judge Dredd? I think it's a lot of fun especially if you enjoy the source material. The callouts are funny, it's got the same tongue and cheek attitude that the comics have. As for the rules you definitely have to put some time into it, they rules aren't confusing or difficult but they aren't intuitive if that makes since. The rules are simple but the game just does a poor job of conveying them.

It's a bit of an arbitrary question to ask without looking at what's available. Doesn't matter if you own one expensive game if you don't like it. Same with two cheaper games. Find a machine or two nearby that you think you'll like first and then answer that question. Variety is important for owning multiple machines, too; consider something like one long-playing game and one short-playing game if you have multiple so you can go to the other for a bit if you get bored of one.

I always liked alphanumeric displays more. Some of the last DMD games to come out (like Tron and Ghostbusters) were absolutely hideous to look at because Stern doesn't want to hire actual artists to work on their games. The Hobbit is my current top pick despite its mixed reception. The theme integration is one of the best I've ever experienced, the callouts/choreography really help learning players get a grasp of the decently expansive ruleset, and IMO is probably the best use of LCD screen space with most or all of the info you need/want about your status always available with relevant movie scenes playing during book modes/Smaug multiball/Arkenstone modes. I got one a year ago and still haven't seen everything it has to offer yet.
Number 2 for me right now is Alice Cooper's Nightmare Castle. I loved the fact that it feels more like a story-driven theme than a band one. Exploring the castle and battling monsters felt incredibly satisfying.
After that my current top picks are The Getaway, Firepower, and Gladiators.

Yes, you're allowed to take pics. You pay admission to the museum and all the machines are on free play. They do have a few machines at the front that use quarters for people who only have time for a few games and don't want to pay the whole admission fee.

The Super Mario Bros pinball machines were the first mario games Charles Martinet voiced by release date.

I can't say I'm a real pinball fan, the number of times I saw (and played) on real tables can be count on two hands. Even searching on the internet, there are no places with more than 2 tables near me, and by near me I mean taking less than an 1 hour drive. So I have to resort to video game pinball.

And so far, I love Banzai Run, Diner and Safe Cracker, along with some Zaccaria tables. High Speed will always have a soft spot in my heart because I played the NES video game, even if it's not exactly the same.

If you haven't done a lot of digging yet, the twilight years of Bally Midway have probably my favorite "obscure" machines, with lots of weird layouts and innovations that were trying to keep the company from going under. Escape from the Lost World, Blackwater 100, Dungeons & Dragons, and Black Belt are all pretty cool machines.

Blackwater 100 kicks ass. Great layout, and I love that starting gate gimmick.

I love these obscure, somewhat unpopular games too. They get a lot of flack for being lesser games, and sometimes they can be kinda crap (I found a Gottlieb "Arena" recently, cool concept ruined by it being a one-shot game), but it's always a treat to find them on location. Medieval Madness and Monster Bash are certainly excellent, but I'm sure I've seen them each about 20 times. Finding a weird pre-merger Bally game is exciting.

Gottlieb/Premier games especially get a bad rap for being lesser and cheap, though they really aren't all that bad. They can be pretty fun. They're a pain in the ass to own/operate, though; you can't dig up manuals or schematics online like you can with other companies because the copyright holder protects them like a hawk. I know this from having owned a Waterworld in the past, which is ironically pretty interesting to play.
Still, I'll always play a Hot Shots if I find one on location before I play a Monster Bash. I don't think there's really such a thing as a bad pinball machine.

Playboy (Stern)

Genesis

Genesis is sort of enjoyable in the way Clue or Con Air are enjoyable. They're just really good bad movies, and Genesis is a really good bad pinball machine.

You're failing to understand that it takes a lot more than a good designer and a good programmer to make a good pinball table. Stern has proved time and time again that it's not willing to spend more than the bare minimum on art, sound, and mechanics. Lyman could be the best damn programmer on the planet, but he isn't saving The Walking Dead from looking like a third-grader's photoshop project. When has Stern ever managed to capture the feeling of getting a super jackpot in Attack from Mars and having the game scream at you? Maybe you'd laugh and clap your hands when watching Batman 66 replay clips from the TV show if you're a troglodyte, but most of us aren't.
Also, Brian Eddy has designed three games. If you consider that Attack from Mars and Medieval Madness are the same game, Brian Eddy has designed two games. Hell, I'll be the first to agree that Dialed In was one of the worst games ever made in recent years. It's an incredibly bland game that they're trying to salvage with code updates. Lawlor hasn't made a truly great game since he stopped working with Larry DeMar in the nineties. Chill out.

How do I git gud at pinball? Does it require hours of autistic practice to beat each table?

Learning flipper skills like dead bounces and live catches doesn't take too long; it's really just a matter of watching a playlist on YouTube and trying to replicate what you see, and it opens up a ton of options for you when playing. It's learning how to nudge the machine and save the ball that takes a lot more autistic practice. I'd try to hone flipper skills first and learn nudging along the way.

I'd love if they went vintage myself. I mean, Ghostbusters (original) and Willy Wonka have tables. Then again, Bayformers has a table, rather than the 80s guys.

As would I, but I wonder if there would be any licensing issues with the older stuff, or general popularity of the franchise. The only Godzilla that's as well known as Ghostbusters in the US is the first one.

Back to the Future (1990) is pretty fun, I also enjoyed Galaxy by Stern (1980). I'm not really like, a pinball "fan", I just play the ones that have cool artwork and are fun to play.

I don't know what makes you think I have a hero when I flat-out told you that nobody gets a free pass for being a good designer. You're obviously very grouchy. Until you have something meaningful to contribute to this thread, I'm going to tell you to get your diaper changed and take a nap.

Have they updated the Knight modes since the original release? Last I played, the goal in Black Knight multiball was to shoot every shot in the game over and over again, with a multiplier for the number of balls in play. It was kind of underwhelming.

Godzilla is rumored for Stern and Spooky. Spooky wanted the Tojo Godzilla and Stern outbid them. Spooky thinks the outbid was just purely to spite them, but idk. Spooky said they went to Japan and bought a license they're really excited about. Probably the anime Godzilla or something like that.

That new Wizard of Oz table is pretty good though, way better than Stern stuff

There's a company that has a plan to make more, after they make more Kingpins (another cancelled game). The Kingpin remake looks great. You can choose between the original code or a new code set they've developed. I hope they do something similar for Pinball Circus.

If that's supposed to say "license" then wrong, licenses had nothing to do with voice actors back then. They bought it through the studio, James Cameron gave them access to dailies so they could write a proper story for the machine as the movie was being made. Arnold was forced to come in and record dialogue, he swore the whole time and was spitting on everything and shit. The swear lines are hidden in the machine's code.

Terminator 2 is just a solid game. Great design, great art, great sound. It's not a terribly deep game, but there's more than enough to shoot for in a game with such short ball times.
There are two categories of games, I think. There are games that are over very quickly and leave you wanting to play one more game, and there are games that have deep rulesets and long ball times. Terminator 2 I would put in the upper echelons of the short games category.
