Any theory on why Killer Instintct was never brought to Japan?
Mortal Kombat was released there, despite the gameplay being way more clunky and different from the usual Street Fighter-like stuff, which KI followed more closely.

probably because its not that great a fighting game. its cool, yea, but in terms of intuitive fighting game mechanics its a failure.

Yeah but there's a lot of bad western fighting games that got localized in Japan, even shit like Rise of the Robots.
All things considered, KI is one of the best western fighting games (if not the best, actually). It's fairly intuitive too, plays a lot like CPS-2 Capcom fighting games, with air block and all the typical Street Fighter motions (as opposed to the more clunky MK and other western fightans).
I find it really weird that Japan didn't got this. They also got all the other Nintendo-Rare games, too.

The combo system is interesting, but it ends up being done in by both combo breakers and damage protection. Shorter combos do more damage and are less likely to be broken (giving you opponent an advantage in the process). Spamming regular attacks was also more useful for racking up damage than combos. And then there's the horrible balance with Eyedol and possibly Cinder being god tier. Even without them, Orchid and Riptor dominate everyone else.

Also, the first 2 games never had air blocking.
