You literally don't need more to succeed. And the above is how I used to play HoMM3 between '02 and '07 - we were just hanging out in local internet cafe for all day long, but since there were 6 of us for single PC, the actual cost was ridiculously small and we were having tons of fun.

I think the "good localisation" bit was a big deal. The same shit with Baldur's Gate and Gothic. CDProjekt did a partician job here with distribution.
Also, slavs gravitated towards PC gaming simply because consoles and console games were insanely expensive in 2000's for a typical Pole or Russian - console game prices were defaulted towards a Western consumer after all.
So now HoMM is kinda ingrained into Polish genotype - like Starcraft is for South Korea.

I read interview with a guy who did official Russian translation of HoMM3. He said it was a race against time to release it before pirates did theirs and flood virtually non-existent market with illegal copies. Heroes 3 was the very first non-pirate game widely available in jewel-case with official Russian translation - good and complete one. And it had the same price as pirate cd games (something unheard at the time). And it was everywhere in all gaming magazines. So literally every one had it.

School kids in russia (lucky ones with pentium133 at home) memorises all tier cretures in all castles - like western kids memorise all the pokemons. I think I still recall all tiers from H3 while haven't played it for 15 years.

Russian translation was really good - on the level of the best pirate translations (warcraft2 CПК, early Fargus).

They translated the cover art, translated the titles not literally, but meaningfully - it was: Heroes of Sword and Magic (to keep homm abbreviation in russian): the Breath of Death. They translated the text and a voice - with a decent voice acting in campaign videos. It was very well done, and all this for the price of a typical pirate disc (70 rubles).

And yeah - I never actually owned a proper console in my life. PC was much more budget-friendly. PSX/PS2 were insanely expensive in Poland, and trying to buy a legit console game for 200-300 PLN (only avsilable in English) in times where salaries revolved around 1000 PLN per month, was an idiocy. And on the other hand you had a shitton of fully translated PC games for 20-40PLN - HOMM3 being one of them.

In Poland it was actually quite an opposite - at least in my neighbourhood. Sure, there were a lot of kids with Pegasus - those fucking things were everywhere and available dirt cheap. If you could afford it, you most likely had a PC. The mantra was "why should I waste my two months worth of salary to by a console just for games, if I can use that money to buy a decent PC?". I myself had an Amiga growing up (which became obsolete VERY fast), later - when I was maybe 11 - circa 1998 - I've gotten my first PC. Finding a kid with a PS1/NES in my neighbourhood was like finding a two-headed cow. And even then nobody wanted the hang out with him, because we couldn't exchange games - which was how you played most of the new releases back in the days.

Level 3 of Heroes 1 campaign appeared to be more interesting than expected. The winning condition was to dig the artefact - The Eye of Goros.

Knight starts in the grass corner, in a first month I had 3 knight castles in that corner with the intention to get 2-3 weeks creatures from 3 castles (1-4 tiers, did have resources for 5 tier onlh in 1 castle) and to steamroll the map with a main hero after that.

To my huge surprise, in about 2 weeks one of the computer players obtained the artifact - immediate defeat and a guillotine animation. And the fartherst save about a week before. How does computer do this - I was sure it didn't visit at least the half of the obelisks?

The only thing I could get from the obelisk map, is that The Eye of Goros is somewhere on a wasteland terrain. So it was a nice exercise with rushing with a main hero across the map and trying to defend my 3-castle corner with minions. Got it right on a third attempt. But even after I wiped out all the enemies, it took half an hour to collect all the obelisks and to find the right spot.

Does computer just dig every square, once it get first 3-5 obelisks? I've seen something similar in Heroes 2 campaign, but computer was unsuccessful that time.

Picrelated - visiting graveyard.

I have also felt agony over the exclusion of the forge.
I never played mm7 or anything, I just know that a sci-fi splicer faction/campaign would have been way better than what AB/conflux was.
Regardless, the only way to realise this shit is through the builds and platforms we have available to us.
Lately I've been playing with VCMI, this is a somewhat stable re-build of the game that allows installation of mods without totally changing everything like WoG.
There are still many issues when you use this shit, random crashes, AI proritises attacking catapult over units and I had to grab another mod to give AI unlimited resources because it's totally gimped otherwise but I've been able to play on original scenario maps with something resembling proper forge and that has been enough for me.

Exactly. And this thread is about normies, who played half-a-dozen games in high school. Not about 1 and a half autizmos maximus from 2ch hk/cg. Heroes3 popularity here was on the level of GTA3, Stalker and FIFA. And localized Disciples were pitched exactly as Heroes3 with a dumbed down combat.

What the fuck are you talking about? PC gaming exploded in the 90s, games like Doom and Quake were gargantuan sellers which drove the market to stronger and better hardware (Quake pretty much spearheading the development of hardware accelerated 3D, people would upgrade or replace their computers just to play it with a good framerate and dynamic lights), the rate at which tech developed was completely breakneck, when PC games were ported to consoles they often had to sacrifice graphics, performance, and even content, depending on the circumstances.

It was an excellent decade for console games, but if you didn't then also pay attention to PC games too, you're just ignorant, the only viable excuse is to be a poorfag.

Not him, but it's very simple to explain:
Dendy cost pocket change when compared with pretty much anything else. Same with Polish equivalent, Pegasus. Then a lot of 2nd hand Genesis came to the market, repeating the cycle
In the same time, PC (Atari didn't count and Commodore had the reverse effect) was a status item until early-to-mid 00s. If you had one, you could claim being middle class. Fucking internet, even modem-based, retained such status till mid 00s

Here is your answer.
In terms of hardware, Polish landscape was changing almost on yearly basis and let's not forget on the profound effects the komunia between 97 and 99 had on general "computerisation" of entire nation. During those three years, THE coolest thing kids could get for komunia was a PC. Bonus points if with Win98.
By '01, PC was downgraded to "just" birthday present and by '03 if you still didn't had one, something was going really fucking bad with income of your parents or you were living on literal potato farm in the middle of nowhere.

And something very similar was going with PS1. When it first came out, it was prohibitively expensive AND it "couldn't" be pirated for like stuff for PC nor you couldn't easily access more games on your nearby giełda. Releases in Polish? Ha, good one!
In fact, having PS1 was still a sign of being from a well-off family all the way until PS2 premiered. Which is funny, because PS2 took Poland by storm around '02 and '03. Greatly helped by tech-wizards who managed to provide pirated stuff for it.

All in all, you are simply young enough to get into PS1 territory when it was already "cheap"

Turns out they were right. So fucking right they make AoE3 (same period as Cossacks for the most part) look fucking terrible by comparison.
As for the slogan, it depends on what you want to get from the game. If you enjoy elaborate armies of hundreds of units, then there is nothing like Cossacks/American Conquest (ESPECIALLY American Conquest thanks to the morale mechanics and aiming calculations) in terms of that. If you want just handful of units to control, then either AoE2 or Rise of Nations/Legends.

It really is - Gothic 1 moreso than 2. On top of it being a good game it was also fully localized into Polish - with quality voice acting and what not. So that's one reason. The other was that those games were available dirt cheap on the Polish market, so almost everyone played them. That was actually CDProjekt's conscious effort, with them releasing a bunch of really good if maybe older or lesser known games in a very attractive price and fully localized. "Kolekcja Klasyki" was essentially a proto-GOG back in 2000s. Infinity Engine games and The Longest Journey also became cult classics in Poland for this reason - good translation, quality Polish voice acting, cheap price.

The "no-patch" thing applied too much strain to the well-behaving developers. For example Bungie lost a huge sum of money because they were forced to recall loads of Myth2 cds because of some stupid mistake included there. And Myth games, like NWCs HoMM games, were the most deep and innovatory games for that time.

And 90-s consoles super strict patching restrictions didn't necessary produce better games. Instead devs were forced to cut stuff and make games more shallow to be able to test them properly before release.

No such thing, and what is wrong with having as much strain as possible, especially when it encourages them to release a proper product that doesn't need any patch or update?
It does produce better games and industry practices as has already been proven.
> For example Bungie lost a huge sum of money because they were forced to recall loads of Myth2 cds because of some stupid mistake included there
Good, thats one of the points, to discourage patches as much as possible and to encourage testing and bug fixing before the game is released and to leave a sour taste in the customer's mouth so they hopefully don't give them money again

In the sense that some games were released with bugs anyway, or obviously unfinished, I can see where he comes from.

It's not an excuse for "We'll just fix it later." or "The first wave of costumers can be our beta testers lol!", but sometimes a bug may not be discovered until after release (occasionally because the players will do something the devs never expected), and with PC games maybe the game has problems with later hardware or changes in the operative system, in which case being able to release a patch is not a bad thing.
On console this is more bothersome though, because usually the dev/publisher will be charged money for releasing a patch and it needs to be vetted, so it can take more time than normal, and there's a direct incentive against doing it (depending on how budget looks, or maybe they're just a small company, they might not be able to afford doing it).
Then there's the fact that only the dev can release a patch on consoles, it's not like on PC where fans can work out a patch or hack together a fix, even if the dev is defunct.

As I remember, the Forge was supposed to be this cyberpunk/sci-fi town that was supposed to be added in Armageddon's Blade. You know, nagas with gatling guns an cyber-goblins with lasers. Bizarrely enough, this actually made a lot of sense in a greater Might and Magic lore, where sci-fi and fantasy intertwine each other. Inferno, or Kreegan are actually aliens from other planet - with a spaceship and all that shit.
Needless to say, first concept arts and screenshots of the Forge were leaked before Armageddon's Blade premiere and fans who played only HoMM series were confused and angry as fuck - because it apparently "does not fit the fantasy tone of the game". The fan backlash rose to such a ridiculous (and completely childlish) scale - there were literal fucking death threats aimed at the developers involved - that NWC scrapped the Forge and hastily replaced it with "more fantasy" Conflux. The idea of a primitive cyborg menace arriving seems like it might be ok, just alter their aesthetics some.

It's not like the entire game would be changed to be like that.

Hah. Makes me think of how Halloween was supposed to be an anthology film series, hence why the third movie had nothing to do with the first two, but it was the 80s and tards complained it wasn't the same slasher film as the first, so we got 30 years of terrible fucking sequels wringing out Michael Myers instead of trying different horror and experimenting.

Sometimes, fans can terrible taste and judgment.

>Loynis
Prayer is one of the most broken spells in the game, and it has a lot of broken spells.

>> No.5732271

In his case, it's a spell that's attached to one of the least impressive caster classes in the game, to an individual who starts with Learning, a horrid skill. And Prayer isn't like Ciele's Magic Arrow, Luna's Firewall or Solmyr's Chain where it can reap huge dividends in the early-to-mid game; starting with Prayer is pointless because you don't have the mana to really abuse it and it also doesn't pack a decisively fight-winning oomph.

Also, Expert Water isn't high priority for most.

For these reasons, Loynis is somewhat pointless; Prayer is a good spell, but not broken; early on Haste will let you do most of the same things but without bleeding your mana pool. I'd take Terek over Loynis any day.

Loynis is hardly main hero material for these reasons; compare him with Jeddite/Alamar, who can possibly score a superfast Expert Earth and abuse Mass Slow AND Resurrection, and Alamar also can likely become a Scholar to teach everyone else the spell. That's way stronger.

Solmyr getting to have Chain Lightning when starting is why he and the Tower faction is my favorite.
Also helps that their tier 1 cannon fodder can be upgraded to shooting stacks, and that their tier 7 assfuckers are shooters as well

that kinda depends to be fair
there are quite a few mages that are main hero worthy depending on circumstances
and in those long epic XL single player maps you usually want an intelligence specialist as a secondary hero
but most of the time yes

Pole here. What this anon writes
>>5702690
is spot on. Just adding my 2 cents here.

Generally speaking, while the UK, France, Germany etc. have developed over the last two decades and are still doing great economically, Poland has truly undergone a transformation. You have to remember that the game was not only released 20 years ago; it was released in a completely different reality for us here in Poland.

>Can run on potato

Very important. Your buddies couldn't laugh at you for being too poor to play a great game since most computers could handle this game and you could just have a good time together. This is connected with this:
>Hot seat can allow entire pack to play

>Gets decent localisation in Polish and Russian from the very start

Important but as kids we didn't give a shit since there was a lot of cooler stuff than the story to concentrate on. Still, it was always nice to get a Polish version of a game. BTW at some point some *really* good movie actors were hired to work on these. They probably don't remember doing that at all when they reflect on their careers.

>No need for PC, since you can just go to internet cafe and all put pocket change on the table to play all day long a match against each other

Exactly. CS 1.6 used to be the go-to game for everyone back in the day so I don't remember playing HOMM3 like that but I can definitely imagine kids spending their entire summer in those places.

Fronczewski is always genuinely baffled when people keep asking him to do the one Baldur's Gate voice line. He acknowledges it and sometimes does it when asked, but has no feelings towards that particular line of work since he is computer illiterate.

If you never played a HoMM III game with 4 buddies during a sleepover, while hiding yourself and the PC under the blanket so they can't trace your moves, while at the same time being trolled by them to get you to make a mistake, you don't know HoMM.

He's baffled why so many young people like him and why he keeps getting invited to do voices in vidya over and over again in general. He legitimately does not realize he's a (positive) meme.
Also, playing through Polish version of BG2 is a sad experience, once you realize how many of those actors are already dead.

So I got 1 2 and 3 on GoG the other day. This is like the third or fourth instance of me owning 2 and 3. I like the optimization gog gave me.

First thing I did was launch 2 and start a game of dominion. Switched it up a bit, played orange whiz (I usually play Yellow warlock). Is it just me, or is purple (barbarian) the last foe standing every time you play that map? Every fucking time he dominates the other players until I come in and its just me and him. Why is barbarian so OP on that map? The whole point of it is to be fair and balanced. Hell, Id say hes the worst of all since he has to traverse that desert for his resources.
All in all though, best map ever. Wish someone would port it over to heroes 3.
