Not retro, but Cuphead obviously. Darkstalkers 3 does look really nice though.

Nearly all Western animation looks like puke. In the West it seems to be an artistic avenue that draws mostly terrible artists since the Disney and Warner Bros. golden eras. Cuphead succeeds because it's a throwback to when Western animation was good.

Many decades ago. Now western animation is Flash shit.Ok, I known that the Japanese use some cheap techniques too, like 3D models, but even the worst anime isn't bad as most current western cartoons.

West entertainment is not even relevant anymore.
I mean, what is Mickey next to Pokémon? What is Batman next to Anpanman?

Akira the film is really only impressive solely from an animation stand point, it is mind blowing though. The plot os an absolute mess, though its understandable since the source material is just way too massive of a story to adapt to a single film. I really recommend the manga, I read it after enjoying the film and find it much better. The plot males far more sense there and it has tons of major characters and other plot points completely cut from the film.

>> No.5700707

But western animation made exclusively for theatres (like the case of most early 20th century stuff) is also not representative of most western animation. Stuff made for TV is always cheap and tries to cut corners everywhere, especially weekly stuff.

It's not even up for discussion: Japanese animation is usually awful.
Just so you know, artstyle =/= animation. Akira has wonderful animation, Disney has wonderful animation. But a lot of animes are literally the character moving just their mouth and nothing else during conversations.

OT: I was really surprised with SNK's animation, so I would go with Garou too. I really enjoyed SNK vs Capcom.

I think you could say that TV animation is usually bad, be it japanese or western.
Then again, you have TV stuff like Batman Animated Series or Cowboy Bebop that break the mold.

Akira is literally the only piece of anime animated on ones.
Western animators animate on ones if they can, twos if they need to really cut budget - while Japanese TV anime is almost always made on threes. That's fucking trash.

The fuck are you talking about? There's low budget TV animation and High budget film animation both in the west and east, and there always has been.

Dragon's lair looks so good because it's short and the makers figured they would make the money back in quarters (they did), the entire point of that game was that you were playing a movie, DL also reuses a lot of animations for Dirk and has repeat scenes.

Any anime TV show will cut corners wherever it can for the sake of time and money, and anime movies look good because they have time and money on their side, literally the same as in the west where TV shows (see pic related) cut corners and movies like The Lion King do not.

Darkstalkers is certainly up there, as is Third Strike, but a lot of KoF games are up there. XIII isn't retro but damn if it isn't some good sprite work

>> No.5704094

Dragon's Lair's footage adds up to about 21 minutes give or take, going by the laserdisc. Plus they charged twice as much to play the game. Decent animation ain't cheap. Plus the whole thing is a big QTE so it's sort of cheating to put it on the same playing field as a regular game. Then again, people who would sing the praises of Dragon's Lair as an arcade game are the same people accusing modern games of being interactive movies.

>Then again, you have TV stuff like Batman Animated Series or Cowboy Bebop that break the mold.
Another clear illustration of the gap in quality between post-70s Western and Japanese animation. The West hasn't been able to compete in decades.

I actually don't find 3rd Strike very impressive. The heavily-rotoscoped animations clash with the cartoony art style. Granted this is a bigger problem with certain characters than others, such as Elena and the twins.

The best-looking Capcom fighting games are, in my opinion, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Capcom vs SNK Pro.

>> No.5707848

>>5706185
You don't know what rotoscoping is. You don't know how sf3's development process precludes rotoscoping as a possibility. You're too blind to see things as obvious as Elena's tits dangling about clearly different from your supposed live action source.
Why do you even post?
