5698887 No.5698887 [Reply] [Original]

Think of all the shit that would be boarderline unplayable without this team. Not only are their Virtual Boy, Saturn, PlayStation and PC Engine emulators highly accurate, some of them (PSX, PC Engine) actually surpass original hardware like higher resolutions, increased loading speed and removal of colour limitations. Mednafen is the best thing ever.

Honorary mentions go to MAME as well. Without these two, we’d be at the mercy of scalpers

is this the bullshit emulator with no UI? Then fuck it. Typing commands to play your kiddie games from 25 years before does not make anyone more intelligent or special. It's Linux equivalent for /vr/. "Oh look it's so much better than any other emulator that comes functional out of the box because setting it up takes half an hour!"

>boarderline unplayable
Can you name at least three titles that are "borderline unplayable" on any other emu than mednafen?
>actually surpass original hardware
using custom filters and plugins does not "surpass" the original hardware since emulation is all about the most accurate imitation of the original hardware.

It is functional out of the box. Customizing it takes about a minute. Being a mongoloid and needing a GUI to hold your hand adds latency too. Stay dumb

It’s a nice emulator but the lack of a UI makes unbearable to use. Not to mention having to rebind my keys each time I open it. Was it really that hard to save the last configuration? I’ll probably use it more once someone develops a good UI, but until then I’ll probably keep using other emulators for most consoles.

What I mean by boarderline unplayable is the difficulty in physically acquiring rare games to play on ageing systems. Seriously how easy is it to get a virtual boy?

Apart from input lag, some cores are pretty damn close. SNES and Genesis emulation has been near perfect for years.

You can just launch them from your file manager.
Why would you need to go through an extra hoop to play your games?

Use retroarch and just download the cores. A much nicer UI with insane customisations depending on the core.

Typing commands is not difficult. Mednafen is the best and most accurate emulator for the Saturn, PlayStation and PC Engine. Yes, it would be nice if Mednafen had an official GUI, but you'd have to be a serious brainlet if you used a worse emulator just because you couldn't type a few words into a terminal. You can also just use the Mednafen/Beetle cores in RetroArch.

It's not supposed to work like that. Set "Read only" flag on the config file to off, you dumb cunt.

It's literally just a good old drag&drop. It's the most accessible function ever.
And it does have UI, just press F1.

Does Mednafen have an actual git repository you can keep updated with pull?
The main one is just a bunch of archives.

Mednafen sold out to Polymega and took out CD support at the same time as Polymega bribed them

https://mednafen.github.io/documentation/#Section_security_includes

"CD Emulation
Mednafen can load CD-ROM games from a dumped copy of the disc, such as CUE+BIN. Physical CD support was removed in version 0.9.38."

Meanwhile the RetroArch fork will let you play games from real CD very soon

honestly its a disaster to use. the in-game options are anti-user and majority of your time spent will be editing a gigantic text file for basic options. like everyone else i use it in core form but retroarch adds more problems due to how bloated it is.

still, mednafen compatibility is amazing. it's saturn emulation can run majority of the library.

freefag opposition to GUIs is hilarious. The main "it's a waste of time and resources" argument falls apart when they spend hundreds of times the amount of time it would take to just make a GUI defending not making a GUI (and also crying about people using more pleb-friendly closed source software). Anything to get that teeny chub out of gatekeeping the plebs I suppose.

It's good design not to have a GUI. It means they focus on developing core functionality. All you have to do is use a separate frontend if you want a GUI. I use MedLaunch and it does the job quite well.

One thing that annoys me, though, is the button assignment forces you to specify a turbo button for all the face buttons. I just use the '.' key on the keyboard and assign them all to that key, but it's a bit annoying. Still, I can understand why they did it, because it keeps things simple.

In software design, it's best to keep design simple and not try and handle a wide variety of user differences. When developers try to do too much it quickly turns into unmaintainable bloatware. It's a sign that the developers have a clue that they don't package their own GUI.

I smell bullshit... version 0.9.38 was released in 2015, years before that retroblox/polymega emubox was even announced (and likely planned).

Also, based on the Digital Foundry video, the way physical CD support works on the polymega is to rip it to internal storage, likely as a bin/cue and emulate from that.
However it IS a bit clever because they said you could start playing "instantly." So they must have some kind of union filesystem set up so it can read through to the physical disc in some fashion.
Emulating from the CD directly is possible, but translating one consoles drive access to your PC's drive would more often than not be painfully slow. Like trying to play a scratched PS1 game on an old console.

>> No.5707474

>>5706572
Using a physical, optical drive to emulate CD-ROM drives from old consoles is a thing that has existed for decades now and isn't any slower compared to real hardware. I know SSF does it, perfectly, and I'm pretty sure there are other examples.
