Have a few concepts, but not content with any of them. One of them was a cube, with different levels and each level was supposed to be harder than the last, but I have no idea how to fill it with content.

I know everybody is crazy for HUH, but I wanted to post a small map I made over the last days.
It originally started as a shitty empty box for testing stuff because I got annoyed by MAP01 having to either run around or noclip to the backyard, so I made something I could load for testing.
That was too boring, though, so I added stuff. Since I hadn't mapped for a few years, I just added stuff as I got back into scripting, 3D floors, portals n shiet, so basically there's everything of everything.
I still have another idea, but I thought someone might like it.

Does the Vita even have gyros? Either way, no. Just stick aim. They all run at stable 60 fps though which is pretty impressive. Some even have mod support and server browsers but I wouldn't do multi on a handheld with shitty stick aim.

I've been tinkering around with GZDoom Builder trying to get this to work and I have no idea what's going on. I've been following tutorials on how to get Monster Closets to work, yet despite following it to a T, the doors never actually open despite me grabbing the red key (which I made as a trigger) to cause the monster closets to work. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here? I am new to mapping and a brainlet and I don't want to stop just because of something easily solvable.

They play differently from Doom's, so trying to use them like that is kind of a waste of time.
The Shambler may seem like an Arch-Vile slot at first, but then you remember he's a big meaty melee machine too, and can take a serious pounding, further resisting explosive damage, so at a glance he's got more like one foot in the Arch-Vile square and the other in the Baron Of Hell square, but there's a bit of Pinkie and Cyberdemon in that equation too.
The Fiend seems like he'd fit as the Pinkie, but he's actually a lot more vicious, just he's never used in as large numbers.

At best, the Scrag figures sort of like the Caco, but less round and smug looking, and the zombie grunts kind of are like the zombiemen, except their shotguns don't hit you very hard, compared to the baldies in Doom, who actually hurt pretty bad, so barely that either.
They have their own synergies, they just do not translate 1 to 1.
Quake's own zombies can maybe be looked at as 'ghost monsters', in how you need an explosive to deal with them.

I cannot imagine a scenario in which comparing quake and doom enemies even makes sense. They're stylistically and functionally different in almost every single way. The soldiers are the only real overlaps and even then, they function very differently between the games.

its hard to say without a picture but you could be:
-using the wrong linedef (make sure its a walk linedef (W1/WR))
-using doors that are raised from the floor instead of lowered from the ceiling
-linedef is facing the wrong way (shortcut F to flip while in line mode)
-door IS going up but is stopping at a nearby low ceiling
-testing in wrong format/sourceport
-untagged sectors/tags in the wrong place

I still unironically believe that it might turn out that NuDoom actually is not just an alternate universe, but also D:E goes further and states that the demons of "hell" you've been fighting are in fact inhabitants of a realm in the Universe known as Otherspace. The technoangels you briefly see in the more recent trailers are Aliens from another part of the galaxy that is closer to the center (basically they are from the galactic inner rim), and they not only have mapped much of the galaxy and several parts of interstellar space, but they are currently in a centuries-long war against the demons. "Hell" turns out to be one of many lower planes of space that can be called "otherspace"

I'm surprised you played it so much without playing on UV. DOOM1's maps are all pretty easy, Thy Flesh Consumed excluded, I wouldn't be concerned. You should play DOOM2 and Final DOOM after this playthrough on UV too. Might have to go back down to HMP for Plutonia specifically.

I've been thinking about extending the deadline, but I'm not sure how that would affect most people, some will get some much needed breathing room while others will always leave it hanging until the last possible moment no matter what you do (been there before)

It's what happens with most community projects, contests, jams and such, a number of people will always drop off for different reasons, they gave up, they are busy with work/school or their computer decides its the perfect opportunity to stop working.
I'm a bit worried this may encourage people to just try to reach for the stars and burn themselves out before finishing their stuff.

Maybe I'm worrying too much, I dunno.
I guess we could take the plunge.

yeah every linedef needs to connect to a corresponding sector through a tag (except Door linedefs but ignore that for now), what youve done is tagged the linedef on the door so the action isnt being received by the door so go into sector mode and right click the door and tag it 2
also your trigger linedef is facing the wrong way, it will probably still trigger but it will be more responsive facing the other way
finally I would recommend making a full circle of triggering linedefs around the key as you could avoid the trap altogether by tiptoeing around the green linedef

Arcane Dimensions and Func Map Jam X (Insomnia) have both had broken triggers for me where I've had to restart the level and then they work. In both cases it was a door that was supposed to open not opening, which makes it impossible to beat the level without Noclip. I'm using Quakespasm.

Is Quakespasm the problem here? For Insomnia, it was the room in Filtration Station where the silver keycard is.

Finally go around to playing Wolfstone to see how it is. Turns out they removed all the swastikas from the maps because the game takes place in a resistance base instead of a Nazi castle. In some cases, the maps were replaced from the ground up because they were made out of nothing but swastikas. Like Map53.

Okay, wtf is going on with myTrenchbroom? I just put the regular zip release on my laptop and copied the other folders from my desktop.

I think needing an arrow to tell the player where to go is a sign the map isn't perhaps the greatest, and if you find yourself about to put in an arrow to make sure the player gets where he needs to go, maybe you should consider revising that area.
Doesn't mean one would have to scrap the entire map (the rest of the map could be fine, even great), but it suggests there's a problem with that location in particular.

That'd be a fun subversion actually.
Optionally, arrows can maybe be utilized as part of a sequence of secrets, rather than the normal progression of the map.

Just finished Master Levels. I really like Dr. Sleep's levels, and having gone back and replayed E4M7 it is really obvious he was the guy who made it (if for no other reason it's because of the super-fast doors with monsters behind them that open up to ambush you, which are in like half of his Master Levels). The rest were super hit and miss. I don't know what to play now though. I kind of feel like playing some of the classic vanilla megawads, before the engine was made open source and people still had to deal with all the vanilla limits, but don't know where to start. I've heard of some wads like Memento Mori but I know that wad was made with multiplayer in mind, and I don't expect to find a server hosting something like that without Complex DOOM and a million other addons.
Or I could play Heretic and Hexen since I never tried those.

Just wrapped up playing all of Wolf3D on Death Incarnate.
I'd rank the episodes overall as 5>3>4>6>1>2
Episode 5 is just really pleasant. Well-balanced maps that aren't too long or too hard, topped off with a decently threatening boss. 3 is almost as good, but E3M6 had a really shitty maze that drags it down. 4 is mostly good, but there were a couple parts with so many enemies that the engine couldn't even draw them all. 6 is a mix of interesting ideas with horrible sadistic designs. E6M1 and E6M3 used secret keys sort of like an early implementation of switches that open secrets elsewhere, but they're downright painful to play otherwise. E6M6 is the best level in the game by a long shot, and E6M8 is an intense final exam. Episode 1 is friendly and basic to the point of being unmemorable. Lacking a medium-strength enemy between guards and SS really hurts the combat dynamic. Mutants were a fucking mistake, though. To its credit, E2 does its best to compensate for how bullshit they are with generous secrets and extra lives. E2M6 was the only map where I almost ran out of lives, but E2M7 saved me with most of the map being a secret area loaded with treasure and lives. Still, mutants are just the worst and that's why E2 is at the bottom of the list.

Really, it's a pretty repetitive game, so if you're not the sort to play through it all, I'd say just play E5. It's got all the enemies and minimal bullshit in its designs. Everyone should play E6M6, though. That map was goddamn great. Every type of enemy attacking from every direction with a lot of interconnectivity in an age of mazes and linear corridors. Made it totally worth the slog through the episode's early maps.

It is fun. But you have to try it for a few levels and try Fresh Supply to ease yourself into it.
It's one of those games that's only fun when you're good at it. But once you're good and it feels natural you start to love it.

Is there any reason to play Vanilla Quake now that Copper Quake exists?

It seems that it nails everything wrong with Vanilla and fixes it. I was always turbomad that explosions wouldn't gib zombies if they were lying down in vanilla.

Also, if I make my HUH map with Copper loaded in Trenchbroom, anons playing with just vanilla won't have any problem playing it right? Since it doesn't add new assets

not sure, but in normal gameplay the only time it really gets annoying is with rotfish, who have a super fucking long death animation and who you generally want to get around as fast as possible because you're underwater
i know a lot of mods change that, but IMO with most enemies it just makes them feel like paper mache instead of making your own guns feel meatier, especially the shotguns which turn into mindless hallway-clearers again instead of buckshot spewers that will do heavy damage up close, but not overpenetrate an ogre's shredded arse

I meant more the fort structure in general. The tower is kind of just a combination gatehouse and uh, I guess guesthouse or something (the house in the back is where I keep my stuff and where my tunnel down into the center of the earth is).

I'm slowly adding some little buildings outside, and my plan is to have a small village around the center keep, and to wall that in as well, make it a little citadel.

Also, to change the flow and to force the player to change his tactics.
It means you HAVE to seek out an explosive weapon or a quad damage, and it means you HAVE to make sure you're able to deal with a specific threat.

I think it's a great idea. Like how the Arch-Vile in Doom, no matter your playstyle, will absolutely force you to use cover and force you to make him priority number one.
