Pic is an early look at Daytona USA for the Saturn

Panzer Dragoon. The editor didn't seem to be sold on it.

And a look at the Saturn itself, people seemed to expect it to do well in the US but were apprehensive about the quoted cost ($350 - $450) and its potentially underpowered hardware.

>Japanese buying $450 consoles like crazy, even 3DOs - but NOT Jaguars

I was still holding out dim hope of the US Saturn having Sega CD compatibility even when this article came out

Wonder if that was even possible for the hardware.

Were Jaguars released in Japan officially? I'd think they'd focus on the US and UK markets first.

No. It would have required a "mega drive adapter" that plugged into the expansion port on top and contained all the mega drive hardware.

As beloved as the Saturn is to /vr/ it should have never existed. Sega abandoned their proven winning platform in favor of a machine that was based on their 2D arcade hardware at exactly the worst time then slapped additional 3D hardware in it too late, making it both expensive and difficult to develop on.

They did, but they were.

Super Play was a pretty big part of my childhood. I still remember driving for ages with my mum to pick up an almost complete collection from a classified ad. Sadly they got lost and ruined over the years.

Doesn't the Saturn have a Motorola 68k inside it?

That's why VDP1, a chip capable of pushing 400,000 polygons a second, was in the Saturn practically from the get-go, right?

Yeah but no Z80 - I don't know if the bus is wide enough to just have a z80 on the spot that would work in conjunction with the 6800. If it was a simple matter they (or someone) probably would have done it.

I'm Europoor but I have an interest in picking up old retro magazines, any way to obtain those without shelling out ridiculous prices?

After E3, magazines would be full of pictures of so many exciting new games. Now that the recent E3 is done, here's Gamefan's coverage of E3 2000, the year of /vr/ rapture. They had a section for each publisher full of games. Unfortunately, my scanner died so I'll just post phone pics but you can get the pdf online to read ...

It starts off with the 3DO. They look like they had a lot of Army Men games in the works. I don't have any of those games, but I guess they were popular at the time.

Anyone remember Akklaim? Bust a Move 4 and Fur Fighters for the Dreamcast was pretty exciting.

Activision did bring the fire with games I had to get like Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, Tenchu 2, THPS2, and Spiderman.
