Because it is. Gunpei Yokoi wanted to make something unto itself, not simply remake SMB1 as a Game Boy game. So it takes concepts and ideas from SMB1 and reinterprets them in Yokoi's vision, essentially making it Yokoi's own Super Mario game without Miyamoto's input.

Early Gameboy games have a screen for screen equivalency to NES games that makes the sprites much smaller in pixels and I always assumed necessitated different physics while later Gameboy games have a sprite for sprite equivalency that makes the screen feel "zoomed in" but allows for more familiar physics.

I understand that it was made by a different name, but it was still made by Nintendo. Why did they have to change the names of the enemies, change Peach to Daisy, change fireballs to superballs, change the setting from the mushroom kingdom to sarasaland, etc? It makes it feel like some weird bootleg game. Couldn't they just use the same enemies and powerups and settings as previous games? Goombas in this game aren't even called Goombas. It's so bizarre.

God, this. It feels like it fell down through a god damn wormhole.
A lot of shit feels different for the sake of being different.

I still wish it didn't do that dumb bullshit where if you ran off a cliff instead of jumping, you immediately fell at top speed.
It's my only major complaint about the way the game handles.

I kinda wish it had more than 4 worlds too. Yeah, it's a portable game, but I still found it a bit too short.

That pretty much explains every other change. They were expanding the Mario universe, he was in a strange new land, just like how the portable GameBoy was a strange new world for Mario platformers.
