They're from some strategy guide. As good as Terada's art is, it's pretty ridiculous to think that Nintendo would ever reference somebody they never even worked with directly. Link's Awakening's artwork always had a cheerful, colourful, very cutesy kids anime art style.

Closest it ever got is this random dungeon artwork with a generic grey dungeon. Plus there's the whole puppet advertising. The whole idea that Link's Awakening was this gloomy, serious game all the time comes primarily from people romanticising the direction the game goes in certain moments and the melancholy from the ending and the direction of the plot after the twist.

Like anything it depends on circumstances of series, genre, etc. but graphics and art style definitely do matter a lot. Take Wind Waker versus Twilight Princess. Two polar opposite styles and feelings of what they convey. TP would not have worked at all with WW's cel-shading. Just like this remake, I'm not sure why making everyone look like toys is supposed to fit the dream world theme.

Hand drawn for me would've been the best, at least for me but then that could end up looking worse. The current look, to me, seems more suited for an Earthbound remake than Links Awakening, but I guess they needed a surreal look for the setting...
