Poor OP wanted to start a comfy pce circlejerk but turns out everyone's played way too much pce these days to buy into its ole hidden gem treasure trove status anymore. Too bad, OP. Bonk's Adventure was alright I guess and some of the choppy-ass shmups had decent bosses. And of course Lords of Thunder is the shit and way above the curve for the platform.

Okay, so the PCE was primarily known for stgs, rpgs, and romance games. A lot of the visual novel games are untranslated and most people wouldn't be interested in playing them.

I haven't played much PCE but this seems to be a list of decent games that I have come across.

It's basically japanese gauntlet with good level design and rpg elements and each character has 2 magic powers. Every boss you kill gives you a permanent stat boost of your choosing and there are also items that boost stats until you die. My friend and I can both 1cc the game so one play through I was the gnome or "knome" and picked up enough agility I could actually outrun my projectiles it was hilarious. It also supports 5 players but I wouldn't recommend any more than 3 cause it gets busy

Can someone explain why the PCE's graphics are all over the place? Some games look like Master system titles, or slightly more enhanced Famicom games.

Then you get games like Rondo, that has sprites that would look fine on the PS/SS. The backgrounds a bit basic though, a bit like a 16 bit game. But few games look as good as Rondo, implying that the system had untapped power.

Dragon's Curse looks pretty neat. I like Popful Mail, and these kind of exploration games so I'll check it out.

It's an unpopular opinion but I agree with him. Higher difficulty and a much stronger focus on platforming lends to a better Castlevania experience. You lose the cool cutscenes, much of the freedom of choice, and interesting secrets that Rondo offers, but in terms of gameplay I prefer Dracula X because it isn't a cakewalk. What it lacks in finesse it makes up for with a fun challenge. Both are great games though.

Adoration for Rondo has quite dwindled after it stopped being the unaccessible holy grail. People tried to hold onto the idea that yeah, best classicvania omggg, but the reality is that when CV1, CV2 and Rondo are all equally accessible, you can tell that RoB is perhaps the least well-made of the bunch.
Despite being a very good game, Rondo isn't the best looking, doesn't have the most exploration and is not the mose nonlinear (obviously), isn't the tightest and least flawed in terms of design, and isn't even the most inaccessible and sought-after. Its only aspect that is, in my opinion, still unrivalled in the series is the soundtrack.
So we're finally able to look at the SNES Dracula X as its own game (rather than the off-brand Holy Grail of the series it always was), and turns out it's a classicvania quite equal to all the others, an original game and totally well worth playing.

Too bad it has an always enabled blur filter, it can't do 240p, and the sound effects sound as stock as can be. Otherwise it's not a bad game at all but it does manage to feel like a much cheaper production than some of the games in the series that are nearly 30 years old at this point.

I just got a Japanese PC Engine in the mail but sadly no games for it yet. I wanted to hold out until the SD System goes back in stock but they won't have them ready until after summer. I may buy the everdrive HuCard tho.
