How do I into going fast in Quack 1? I've tried the strafe jumping business but I feel like I must be doing it wrong, because I don't feel like I'm going any faster.

I got spoiled by DUSK allowing me to do it too easily, I suppose.

So I uploaded backups of the OP videos to Bitchute just in case copyright bots decide to strike.

Not entirely familiar with this site really, the quality looks like crap and I'm not sure if its because they are still processing after all this time or if its playing them at lower quality by default.

In any here are the backups:

you have to unzip the UDOB map pack in the copper folder, careful not to put the whole thing inside the "maps" folder
then you load it with a shortcut with the -game copper command like like Arcane Dimensions

If you are using Mark V you can select maps from the menu but they need to be in the copper folder, not on id1

https://mega.nz/#!v18kCQyB!ZmM6I4KYnG4VBYwPC2A1fWXwNyMfBXAQhygehKDkZOE
So this is mainly just for the people who like to unzip stuff. I've added a bunch of commenting to a bunch of files, but I'm a bit stuck on monsters so I sort of just cheaped out and decided to upload this unofficial update. If you have interest in modding, or are a modder, and want to take the time to go through the code of my mod and see if there's something that needs explaining but isn't explained, please do. Also if you play it and it crashes please reply.
Just be warned, some of the code may give you panic attacks, suicidal or homicidal thoughts, hair loss, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, and the urge to reverse the industrial revolution.

It would help if you bunny hopped, strafe jumping is a Quake 2 and 3 thing.
Basically start off with a circle jump for initial speed, then let go of forward and hold left or right while gradually looking in the same direction with the mouse. Too slow and you'll barely gain any speed and too fast and you'll kill your momentum, it takes a while to get a feel for it.

They just unload themselves when you quit the game.
If you want a quick setup for a mod, just make a shortcut to GZDoom and add the filename of the .wad or .pk3 you want it to load on the target path. You can even add multiple files to a shortcut, like a gameplay mod and a map pack.

Here's a shortcut I put up to run Sigil with Immoral Conduct:
>C:\Games\Doom\gzdoom-bin-3-1-0a-x64\gzdoom.exe icd-se.wad icd-zdsp-v3gfx.wad SIGIL.wad SIGIL_SHREDS.wad

This also works for running some older megawads which come with a separate dehacked file, and what not.

I don't know the command line option, but it's easily accessible from the options menu. It's in Automap Options -> Highlight Interactable Secctors or some shit like that. You'll know when you see it.

Keep in mind this is not guaranteed to always work, there are many secrets that don't show up in the automap until after you activate them, even with that option turned on. The secret wall in MAP02 of Ancient Aliens comes to mind.

keep in mind that with vanilla quake physics (not quakeworld), you aren't gonna get any faster than roughly double your run speed from just bunnyhopping, even if you use the powerbunny technique to eke out a bit more speed (which I don't - it requires a good bit of manual dexterity to pull off reliably)
with the vanilla quake physics, friction applies for the single frame you're touching the ground, which naturally caps your max bunnyhop speed. in quakeworld and later quake games, it doesn't, leading to potentially unlimited speed from bunnyhopping/strafejumping

this webm's with vanilla quake physics - you can definitely go faster than this, but not by much (maybe 40ups more - for comparison, running is capped at 320ups)

ACS was introduced by Hexen. Seeing that ZDoom is the only real Hexen sourceport anybody cares about, it has an expanded version of it covers Doom and friends. And DECORATE is pretty much exclusive, yes.

Otherwise DeHackEd stuff from my knowledge is what you use for less advanced source ports, and I think that's how REKKR was made?

Yes, they're gr8. I like Dissolution Of Eternity the most, but Scourge Of Armagon is still pretty good (though the start feels slightly slow).

DOPA isn't really official though, that was some guys at Machine Games going "Hey, Quake's 20th Anniversary is coming up, wasn't that an awesome game? We should make a little episode to celebrate it!" then released it for free.
I think it's a good little episode, I put in Trent Reznor's Ghost as the soundtrack, and found it actually fit pretty well.

I'll upload the soundtrack files for you guys as soon as I get off the shitter, as the commercial releases seem to lack them these days, and some cool anon on /wsg/ recut the Ghosts album to loop properly for gameplay.
The music is like between 20% to 40% of the fun of Quake, depending on the level, and y'all shouldn't be without.

Anyway, enough literal shitposting, here's the Quake music pack I promised y'all people:

One folder says "Custom NIN Selection For Scourge". I take it the author of this pack didn't like Scourge Of Armagon's music very much (personally I think it's very good), I just took this and put it in DOPA's music folder, and it sits there well.
You can of course use any of these music packs for any map pack, or even make a blend of your own for a pack.

Trent Reznor's Ghost album is open source and he encourages people to use it and play around with it, and the other soundtracks I'm supplying because it's usually missing from modern commercial releases of Quake, so I'm not doing anything wrong here, just helping some pals.

the relation between enemies and level design, and a good enemy priority scheme I'd say

DUSK misses "oh shit"-type enemies like Archviles or Shamblers which demand your immediate attention and require you to immediately change your playstyle if you don't want them to fuck you over, largely in part because of the no-hitscan rule preventing enemies from having outright dangerous attacks.

So most enemies in DUSK are easily dodgeable. It doesn't help that levels in DUSK give you a lot of space to maneuver around in unlike Quake's claustrophobic environments, so circlestrafing becomes king. The more threatening enemy types don't get used as often, and there's too much free space (nor does DUSK ever really commit to going the first-person bullet hell route which would have worked better than what we got)

AMID EVIL greatly suffers from the fact that old enemies are tossed away for ever in favor for new ones each episode (meaning every four levels), which greatly limits encounter variety potential when you don't mix and match all these enemies to create something interesting. Add to the fact that much like DUSK, AMID EVIL gives you too much free space to maneuver around in so combat almost plays out like Serious Sam where most enemies will beeline straight towards you while occasionally stopping to shoot at you. Basically the enemy variety doesn't get properly realized here.

If you think back on the enemies in Quake, all of them inhibited your movement in some way or another and required different movement patterns to avoid (Ogre's bouncy nades force you to get closer to avoid getting backsplashed, Death Knights force you to jump or micrododge, Shamblers force you to break LoS, Fiends require you to sidestep but also look behind you when they leap, and Vores are pricks, Zombies force you to put some distance between you and them so you can safely blow them up), whereas in DUSK and AMID EVIL the almighty circlestrafe and/or backpedal is too dominant.

Dusk ranges from so-so to okay. Inconsistent level design and detail density, offers very little challenge on any skill level. Feels weaker than many Quake mapjams.

Project Warlock is shit. Flat, wolf-tier unispired level design (with pointless elevators thrown in, that connect 2 completely flat areas), 4-6 textures per level, enemies with no rotations, absolutely no balance at all - the moment you upgraded one of your weapons, everything else becomes obsolete, and every enemy just melts down under fire.

Those two are lacking in pretty much every regard.

I get that chaingunners make people mad, but hitscan enemies are necessary and too many of these imitators don't understand how important they are to good design. If they absolutely must follow a "you can get through every level without taking any sort of damage" rule, then delayed hitscan attacks like the Archvile's should be used.
Maybe even just give a Chaingunner clone a distinct wind-up noise before he starts tearing you down.

I think this is not a big mystery. The grand majority of people who bought them probably never would bother setting up a sourceport and playing Doom/Quake/etc, even if it's a very simple process. So playing nu-retro games is the next best thing. So their overwhelmingly positive scores are not *just* for the game they're reviewing in question, but also the baggage of the actual retro games it's based on that they remember from their childhood / or that they never got around to playing but know are "cool".

I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I liked DUSK. I'm just saying I think it's easy to explain if you take nostalgia and peoples' laziness into account.

Both of those games are very different than Doom or Quake, opting to be a first person Smash TV clone with large open environments and a huge amount of enemies and projectiles. For a game where each encounter is more intimate, something like hitscanners are good for prioritization. When there aren't a hundred enemies chasing after you, it becomes too easy to circle strafe forever.

I guess if we're talking about old-school shooters then sure, though I was rather referring to how FPS games at large don't require hitscan to be good.

Hitscan is a highly effective tool for creating threats, though I feel DUSK's identity stems from the fact that a one-hit kill difficulty like DUSKMARE is even viable, so hitscan in the traditional Doom sense would ruin that and potentially make it harder to distinguish from the crowd.

If anything I would have liked it to go further down the bullet hell route with enemies which can actually discourage circlestrafing, or at least make better use of its slide mechanic by having projectile types which can only be dodged by sliding under them. Hitscan is tried and true, but I would like to see shooters trying to break out of Doom/Quake's mold to try and be more experimental. It's kind of upsetting to me that the only half-decent recent FPS releases in a decade and a half take so strongly after Doom/Quake instead of trying to do something unique like Devil Daggers did.

This is why I suggested a hitscan attack that can be prepared for and force the player to act in a different way than just jumping circles around every enemy.

Does that mean that I can get free reviewing copies like my favorite youtuber Civvie11 and gggggmanlives? or do I have to visit my closest piramancy site???

I wouldn't say hitscan is bad, but I wouldn't say it's near-essential either or that the lack of it is why some of these new shooters fall flat. Inhibiting your movement has been accomplished without hitscan before through level geometry and good enemy design. If you think about it, Quake barely relies on hitscan for 85% of its combat outside Shambler encounters (not counting the human enemies who only appear at the start of each episode which are rarely used in custom maps and deal little damage to you anyways), which works because the level geometry is so claustrophobic and the enemy designs effective to make good use of the environment.

Though a hitscan enemy like the Shambler/Archvile is usually always welcome in games where the levels aren't always open.

I think this more than anything shows though that people are happy to play these sorts of games, and they're more than ready to play one which is a cut above the others.

A lot of these games flat out just list every fucking 90s FPS they can think of, regardless of if it's all that relevant to their own game.

On Steam, Project Warlock mentioned Doom, Hexen and Wolfenstein (not 3D?) in it's summary alone.

Also if you check out their old Greenlight page (the one they kind of dicked over when they got a GoG timed exclusive deal), they mention Hexen, Blood, Quake, Wolfenstein 3D (correctly for once) Doom, and even go off the rails to mention Fallout.

Seems like all it's really in aid of, is hoping to tie people's nostalgia to a game that only very shallowly resembles the games they're actually nostalgic for. Sure would explain why people carried away by hype for Proteus are proclaiming it as 90s FPS games done the way they always were.

I played through his maps in Doom 2, and I felt he didn't know what he was actually doing. The levels felt like he didn't really enjoy the new enemies, and the theme in general. Gotcha, Industrial Zone and Abandoned Mines are really substandard works by his standards. The point where I felt he found a new groove was The Living End, which level seems like an early prototype for E4M2/M6 first, then Sigil.

Then going onto putting spins on it in E4 levels, Wizard's Manse (as well as some other Q levels of his) from shotgunstart, the entirety of infamous Daikatana's ep1 (from what I gather, fanpatch actually rebalances it, toning some encounters down), as well as, yes, Sigil.

It may actually have been too complex gameplay-wise. I just played it for a bit and after some extremely basic early levels, it's almost like Hexen on a prototype Wolf3D engine. There are teleports, destructable walls, four key colors (that I found, and they're single-use unlike Wolf3D or Doom keys), the enemies are fairly sturdy and numerous, demanding a lot of clicking or slow charged shots, and I just wandered through a series of teleporters to find this scroll giving me a hint about a maze in some other level that I haven't been to yet.

The real reasons I'd assume it wasn't a major success like Wolf both stem from its publishing. It's one of the games id made under contract to Softdisk, who had some fairly strict limitations on hardware requirements for their games. Hope you like EGA graphics, PC speaker sound effects, and one single short loop of music taken from Keen 4. Also, because it was published by Softdisk, it wasn't so widely available as id's later Apogee- and self-published shareware titles. You could find a copy of Wolf3D or Doom's shareware anywhere, but as far as I know you could only get Catacomb 3D if you had a subscription to Gamer's Edge magazine.

D44M is a modern game with modern audiences in mind. The start of the game really isnt all that action packed compared to the rest of the game. While its cool to have a demo in modern day, the content of the demo is the part where its telling new players what the game is but in a slow and inviting kind of way. Its not like Plutonia MAP01 that just goes all out the moment you start. D44M is a good game but its understandable for a veteran to be skeptical. More bossfights, Trent Reznor voicing Ranger and doing music, a booming Super Nailgun. Also some way to make the axe useful, perhaps allow for a quick swing, ala Duke's mighty boot, or maybe the occasional melee finisher when under the effects of Quad Damage (it would have to be quick, of course).
Mostly copy or play off the basic gameplay of the original, but maybe add some new things here and there, a couple of new weapons and items, some new enemies.

I would also like the grungy and gothic aesthetics, with the muted palette and darkness and all.

The laser gun was sort of cool, but I seldom felt I got any use out of it, first time I got it, I blasted off my ammo dump into a large warehouse section, to bounce the lasers all over the place, and that was actually incredibly effective, dusting almost all the badguys in there, but I didn't really find myself in a spot like that again.

Also, the way you recharge the hellstaff is hilarious. Since it's a demonic weapon, you have to pick up demonic runes and read them, causing you pain and recharging the staff.
Corvus is apparently a religious zealot, so the runes say things that would specifically ire him.

>Corvus, having been cursed by the Serpent Rider D'Sparil upon the latters death, found himself trapped in the Outer Worlds. He would spend ages wandering through them, hoping to find a way home. All his former weapons had been rendered inert, save for his single staff. Eventually, while in the midst of a battle, Corvus' Tome of Power was able to create a world ripple back to Parthoris. Upon his return, however, he found himself in the middle of yet another conflict.

I don't think he liked Heretic that much, and couldn't come up with new monster behavior, saying something along the lines of the roster being "diverse for diversity's sake," meaning that a good chunk of the monsters were arbitrarily made, or were made redundant by other cast members. It was advertised for a while, then silently dropped.
It's a damn shame he abandoned it, because Heretic is considered "fantasy Doom," and I would've liked to see a fleshed out "fantasy HD."

While these people are wrong, and the work of Romero, the Casalis, or the NRFTL pair are much better than the work of the latest glorified userwad, in the case of McGee they are right.

McGee's maps are really nothing special. They have no style, no soul, just one of the many average mapping of the time. The same goes to Willits, Green, and all the Master Levels/TNT shit.

One week sounds reasonable since Trenchbroom is surprisingly easy to pick up, so the deadline would be Sunday 30 maybe 23:00 GMT
we can extend the deadline if really necessary but get your shit in time

since a lot of us are going to be newbies It would be best to stick to vanilla

Why did this get so many mods? It's one of my favorite games, but I never played it and though "man, I wish this had a billion mods for it like Doom". All marines have a backup pistol and at least a single-shot grenade launcher. Greens have a ZM, blues have a Hunter, greys have an SMG, and browns have a full-blown rocket launcher. The only variant that you'd want to fight in close quarters are the browns, because they can only use melee and their pistol if they're too close for rockets.
