How do you feel about people who collect only to collect, and never actually play the games in their collection. I find this form of collecting to be ultra annoying since video games are meant to be played, not just look pretty on a shelf. For whatever reason, the collectors I know who do this type of collecting are among the most toxic as well.

Total and complete faggots. Hoarders lead to the artificial scarcity of many good games and they probably impoverish their families(if they have any) just to maintain their junkie neato plastic shapes habit. What they do is mindless and empty to the extreme.

^that is faggotry. Some of these mental munchkins spend good money on something that they never play and never seen again because they put them into boxes or behind stuff.

I used to "collect" things, but I got better.

I bought a ton of games and some consoles back when you could still get deals on ebay. Only ever got around to playing a fraction of it.
I will be putting most of it back into circulation this summer by selling at high prices. I hope this upsets at least some of the people reading my post. That is all.

CIB is ok to collect, in my opinion. you have more than just the game, and it looks good on display.

then you have the faggots with walls of plastic and you know 95% of it is garbage shit they wouldn't even want to play but they have it because they gotta collect em all.

The worst part about hoarders is that they are sitting on many video game secrets in the magazines that they also hoard that they do not fucking read. Oh well, the die-offs will bring most of it back out inside 20 years.

For every collector that owns games and doesn't play them, there are probably at least 100 other people who played the games as kids but don't anymore and just have the games collecting dust in their garage/attic/basement or whatever just rotting away in the dust and the humidity in an old cardboard box. I would rather a collector who actually takes care of them owns them than someone who doesn't care about them at all. Why single out collectors for the crime of owning games but not playing them?

>> No.5678169

>>5678034
Because they're the kinds of people responsible for making many retro games simply too expensive to buy for people genuinely interested in playing them, all so they could "collect them all" like it's fucking Pokemon. At least the OG Xbox and it's exclusives are still cheap to get since I can't emulate them well enough and it has exclusives I want to check out.

>> No.5678171

>>5677318
For a while I was mad because hoarders shot the price of games way up, but I don't really care anymore since I own most of the games that have real nostalgic value, and anything else I have on a rom.

I another real problem is that the retro collector scene became fashionable on social media. People would buy games just to show them on their Instagram and get likes, gain popularity, etc. It became a status symbol.

>> No.5678173

Why would anybody on "/vr/ - Free Games" care about what other people do? Everyone on this board pirates and makes fun of people who buy games anyway. Yet when you give them an excuse to yell and scream about people buying games, oh boy, nonstop replies.

>> No.5678175

Why? Collectors like that often have at least a few things that are actually rare. Why would you want it destroyed just to spite someone for buying 30 year old games?

collectors take games out of circulation, games rotting in an attic never re-entered circulation. if you remove the collector, more games are in circulation because they aren't there to buy and hoard them. if you remove the guy with the games rotting in the attic, nothing happens.

this mainly pisses off people who don't want to emulate, and is especially annoying because of the recent collector fad caused by MUH ECELEBS

I'm pleased that the interest in collecting is in part preserving old video games that otherwise would be thrown away or destroyed.

And since we are all mortal and individual circumstances will change, there is a good chance that these preserved games will one day trickle back into the market to those who are interested in owning them.

I just don't know at what point the line between enthusiast and collector is crossed.

Like, I have almost 700 unique games, many cib, anything I bought intentionally was with plans to play it. I did buy large lots early on for cheap so I could get my hands on a few wanted games.

I still play 30-50 games a year. I love video games and I collect them as well. Am I an enthusiast, or am I collector? The extremes of the argument say I'm either a godlike enthusiast or the worst kind of collector.

I think the main thing is physically purchased games, if you intend to play them, is not only an investment of capital but also time. Time is the capitalist individuals' only leverage-able resource, so to predeclare one's intention by spending money on something you plan to invest your time in is quite a luxury.

Are games collections the retirement hobby of our generation's men?

>> No.5678241

Who cares? Collectors are being left in the dust now that original game prices have skyrocketed. There are FPGAs, mini consoles, flash carts, ODEs, not to mention all the bundled collections you can buy on current hardware, fanmade reproduction carts and official reprints. There are so many different ways to play old games now. The only people who really care about owning the original copies are other collectors, so fuck 'em, let them fuck themselves financially for bragging rights.

I dunno.

I wish I didn't fucking give all of my games away to GameStop as a kid, though. Imagine all of the shit I could be playing right now.

that collection looks really cool and I hope whoever actually collects that stuff plays it. I'd be terrified of it burning down, though.

For me it depends on what kind of person the collector is. If it's some pseudo-elite shut-in who uses his hobby as a status symbol, I don't like it (I assume those make up the majority when talking complete collections). If it's someone who genuinely cares about the games they get, I can understand that.

The games I really like, I also got CIB in good condition because they mean something to me. I also still play those whenever I have the time.
Things like figures on the other hand I keep inside their box and display them like that since I don't intend to play with them and they can be displayed either way. I prefer keeping those looking as good as possible since they're display-only material anyway.
