Name 5 PS2 games that were directly influenced by OoT. For that matter, name 2 Dreamcast games, or even 1 nintendo game of any gen that isn't a zelda itself.

Meanwhile, Alone in the dark influenced dozens of PS1 games, at least a dozen PS2 games and the influence is still felt today.

Games like the Resident Evil series, the Silent Hill series, TRAG, Martian Gothic, the Fatal Frame series, haunting ground, kuon, fear effect, galerians, parasite eve, even resident evil 7 and REmake 2, literally every survival horror game made in 25 years, including technically starting the genre.

OoT took a bunch of existing ideas and put them together. Invented nothing and became irrevelant within a few months of release. Only nintendo fags, who play far fewer games than other fanbooy types, stress any "importance".

Tecnhicallu, OoT owes a lot tonother games. It owes Megaman Legends, Dragonquest 3, and Mario 64 just to name a few. These are more important and more influential games at the end of the day.

Yeah, that's why I found so many other games so much more fun that year, yet found OoT boring and derivitive. I quit out of boredom 3 hours into OoT.

Yet games of all other genres, and on multiple platforms from that year and earlier had me riveted.

The problem is that OoT represents the earliest example of a modern game. So younger people play it and think it's just better than everything else from baxk then. Because it's closer to what they know.

So arguably, any retro gamer who gushes over OoT is a contrarian faggot.

Ok, so let's say that's true. In my post I gave examples of lots of games that were influenced by a single game. Up to and including modern, popular games.
IMO, OoT was a lot less influential than that, because aside from other Zeldas, I can't personally think of any games that actually rip off OoT in any way.

So by the terms I set forth, AitD is more influential than OoT. And according to you, AitD's entire genre is irrevelant.
So (stay with me, kiddo) put these ideas together and: OoT was so irrevelant, that even a nothing genre like survival horror had more influence on gaming over the past 2 and a half decades.

Prove me wrong. With examples, instead of just being a flippant fucktard.

It's been called overrated so much by contrarians that the new contrarian move is to now say it's not overrated. It keeps swinging like a pendulum like this. Fixed that for you. Unless you take a look at a few e-celebs and people who parrot them you barely see enough opinions about Ocarina of Time, whether it being one of the best or one of the most 'overrated' games.
It doesn't help that vocal minorities are even louder on this board than elsewhere because of reasons that have nothing to do with retro games.

As for myself, I don't love it as much as I did 20 years ago and I wouldn't call it one of the best games ever or even my favorite N64 or Zelda game -I'd take Zelda 2 or Blast Corps over it anyday of the week- but I still like to play it occasionally and I feel that its presentation still holds up despite it feeling more dated because of the low framerate, the combat that could've been fleshed out just a little more and its cutscenes being such a slog that it's actually even worse than a lot of later games or even FMV games like 7th Guest or Myst. The way the sub areas are set up and the compositions from Kondo are reason enough that I'd recommend newcomers to at least try it out for a while. That being said, I never bothered to complete the game for 100% because by the time I get to the shadow temple or the sun temple I just want to get it over with and move on with a different game and it's not like you get any useful rewards to find the skulltullas or anything.

>> No.5673652

It's a decent game, not amazing, not shit. While it did not invent certain mechanics, like locking on to targets, I think it did inspire at least third party 3D action based RPGs and made them simpler. Early titles in that category had awful combat mechanics.

Sure, but name 5 games since then, that aren't zeldas themselves, that clearly drew inspiration from OoT. And be careful not to name games that predate OoT.

The point I'm trying to make here is that OoT is popular, and that's all. It's not super influential, or "important". It's popular, and well liked and why can't that be enough for fanboys?
Why does it have to be the best thing ever that literally invented every single gameplay mechanic ever that's also super important and better than everything sony ever did combined?
It's just a well liked game that a lot of people find fun. Get the fuck over it.

>> No.5673676

I'd be generally surprised if Piranha Bytes or CD Projekt RED games didn't take some inspiration. Or the Fable series, for instance.

However I don't know why you have problems reading my post, I just said it didn't invent stuff and it was an ok game, not the best thing ever. That reaction makes it look like you're the one that needs to get the fuck over it, my man.

Anyways, I always felt OoT caused such a big impact because of how well they transported the Zelda elements and mechanics to 3D, and not necessarily because they brought many groundbreaking innovations.
It was an impressive game for the time, but it was quickly surpassed by many others in the genre, including its successor, Majoras Mask, which improved 3D Zelda on every aspect.

Beyond Good and Evil, Okami, Dark Cloud 1&2, Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, all of these owe lots to the cinematic 3D action gameplay of Ocarina. But even the 3D GTA games aren't too dissimilar, playing the role of Tommy Vercetti in Vice City is not that different from playing the role of Link in Hyrule.

Ocarina itself owes a lot to the Mario 64 engine it was built with, but so much more care was put into the story and atmosphere, how well a player can sync with Hyrule and imagine themselves living in the games settings, interacting with other characters and playing not just for fun but to advance the game's plot and see what happens next in the story.

I agree Megaman Legends is absolutely underrated and deserves way more recognition.

It is one of the most influential games ever and at the time there no game like it. But it's a victim of it's own success. It's formula has been built upon and improved by many games that have come after it both combat mechanically and puzzle/adventure wise.

So it is undeniably a very important game. It's not overrated, it's outdated. Unlike say... super mario 64 where no action platformer ever really outdid its mechanics. In my opinion the best way to define the argument that a game has 'aged' if im going to use that unholy term, it would be to look at the games that tried to build off of it and see whether or not those games improved on it, or failed to live up to it. I can say with confidence that there are Zelda games post OOT that i've enjoyed more than it.
