Every one of my optical disc playing systems are modded to play burned discs. Failing that, there's emulation. And not a single one of my authentic discs is afflicted with disc rot.

Yeah, you know, back in the day, downloading emulators wasn't a thing.
The fact you're younger and weren't around in actual /vr/ times doesn't turn people who were actually alive back then into "buyfags" or collectors all of a sudden. We just didn't sell or throw away our stuff and still have them.

Being a person who has like 5000 CDs lying around, I can confirm disc rot is a myth. I don't have a single CD(!) with disc rot.

That's why they're bringing out optical disc emulators for consoles likes dreamcast, saturn and ps1 with more to come.

That's emulating the transfer of data the exact same or faster than from a cd which will not change anything, though I'm sure some of you dunderheads will confuse it with cpu emulation.

Yes, I fully relate except once a DVD did spontaneously turn to static one day. It was stored properly with the rest of them and hadn't been touched in months at least, so it had to be disc rot. Also I own some Laserdiscs, and air getting between the two sandwiched platters that are glued together causes "chips" or bits of static, like a worn out tape on some parts on some discs.

Disc rot is not even a thing for digital mediums

Disc rot is a term that is being misused, it's only a problem for poorly-manufactured laserdiscs

You can see examples of actual disc rot on youtube. None will be CD, DVD or BD. Because when digital doesn't work, it doesn't work at all. With analog, you get errors but can still watch the shit.

>> No.5670726

Why does anyone care if discs are rotting? It's a digital format, you can back them up and never worry about losing the information. I'm a bit of a collectorfag myself, but it's silly getting yourself worked up over the inevitable, especially when there's really nothing on the line except a bit of sentimental value

>> No.5670731

>>5670720
You're just using different terminology then, the process is the same. CD/DVD decay is still called disc rot, and it is very much real. One of my Dreamcast games developed pinprick-sized holes despite looking brand new.

I live in the North East where it can get really hot (over 100 degrees F) in the summer and very cold (-10 to -50 F) in the winter. As long as you keep your games/other CDs out of the attic or your car and in a place where the temp is comfortable they should be fine. Extreme temps can destroy CDs though and encourage rot. The hilarious thing is that I remember when they first introduced CDs. They said they would last forever and were even unscratchable when they first came out (not kidding) then the Milli Vanilli on stage incident happened.

yes and no. disc rot is a combination of poor storage conditions and poor manufacturing processes.

if you store you discs properly: away from sunlight, away from extreme levels of humidity, they should be fine, IF the manufacturing standards were high. If the plant that pressed the discs was shit, your discs will rot eventually, no matter what you do.

bit rot is real too, but your optical media is likely to fail before your cartridges flip so many bits as to be unplayable. either way, this is all boogeyman bullshit. don't store your discs in a damp cave with the sun blaring on them and you'll be fine.

bait thread.

The burned one was always in a binder and the original stayed in the gem case on a shelf.
I have some disks that are just as old or older which are in much better condition, this is why I think it has to do with cheapness of materials used in production.
