So, I've pretty much always been a Sega fan over Nintendo, but I want to explore the snes more. I've played through almost all the good genesis games, both first party and obscure, and I want to give the super nintendo a try. Don't name me any of the obvious picks (Mario World, Final Fantasy VI, Super Castlevania IV etc.) I've played those before, give me some of the more weird or unknown stuff. I tend to prefer more arcade style games (the types of games that were popular on sega consoles), but I'll give anything a try.

It's hard to think of "great" SNES games that aren't popular to some degree.
If you can play Super Famicom games, play Umihara Kawase, Go Go Ackman trilogy and the Goemon games.

Earth Defense Force is good fun, it's a shmup but it's really accessible. Play with homing missiles for a comfy experience. 8 different weapons trees, so lots of replay value. Also if you like physical carts, it's like $12 or so.

There are very few hidden gems in the SNES catalog, sadly. Outside of Nintendo, Square, Konami, and Capcom, you're pretty much just left with a few shooters and some quirky Japanese titles and little else.

True Lies was the second best overhead shooter on the console. Almost no one knows about it.

Number one is of course Zombies Ate my Neighbors, but desu, it wins on creativity and the True Lies gameplay was better.

I also nominate Actraiser 2. I think everyone bought it expecting it to have enhanced sim aspects and when they learned it scrapped them they never bothered to play it. It's actually a pretty good game from what I remember.
