The original is still perfectly fine to play. Just remember one rule: the guns are inaccurate to start if you want to play the game run-n-gun style, so put your skill points into the gun class of interest, and focus accuracy mods on your favorite gun. Everyone that complains about the game seems to just bitch about "muh aiming reticle".

Thanks for the helpful response. If I may ask what kinds of things does it change I know it (moderately) improves the graphics but the whole reason I asked was cause I worried about story/game play changes.

Deus Ex should always be enjoyed vanilla first, and then given the mod treatment. Using modern launchers and renderers to improve the experience is totally fine though. If you really, REALLY can't get over vanilla or so forth, however, then Give Me Deus Ex, Shifter and BioMod all work to be "vanilla-plus", GMDX in particular overhauling the game but not trying to change what it is. Revision is a tough sell because it's like a heavily remixed version of the game, trying to follow the same blueprint but making a liberal amount of alterations and design changes in an attempt to modernize it, and for many purist fans it's just a bit too much.

I wouldn't recommend it to people who have played the original, and I -certainly- wouldn't recommend it to first time player.

Most people's biggest sticking point with the game is the aiming reticle and the time it takes to tighten early on the game. This problem can be completely negated by finding the laser sight on the first level and sticking it on your pistol.

Be warned that attaching the scope mod will cause a glitch and break your laser mod. So don't.

Thanks that's actually most of what I was trying to figure out. When I bought Deus Ex through GOG it started pushing the mod but nothing I could find would tell me what it changed and while it seemed like it was just a graphics mod I wasn't sure.

gameplay, maps, music, textures, models. It fucks with he maps in a weird way, sometimes they just add something new, most of the times they rework the map in the most retarded ways. The graphic changes completely destroy the grounded aesthetic the game was going for. Gameplay changes range from understandable to bad. Oh and on top of that, the mod makes a 20 year old game chug even on modern computers.

Shifter on the other hand, only changes a few annoying gameplay mechanics, fixes some common annoyances, and includes some basic quality of life improvements.
