I was an early teen, so I didn't have the money or a method to buy whatever I wanted on ebay.
There were a ton of games that I've rented or played at other people's houses and I was legitimately depressed because I thought I'd never get a chance to play them again. Discovering emulation felt like this video.

>> No.5657634

It’s like gay sex. You don’t want to like it, but the second you actually try it you realize it’s actually amazing. You still hold on to your collectorfag/straight status but you can’t deny how it felt when the head of your penis entered into that bro’s anus.

Things I refuse to emulate: Neo Geo outside of MAME. Fuck that noise. It takes half an hour to boot some Neo Geo games on the Wii on homebrew.

Why the fuck are you using a Wii, at all? You got meme’d hard son. A sealed Raspberry Pi is $25 and will run that shit in seconds. Or borrow your mom’s laptop. Here’s a hint, don’t listen to Nintendrones handing out advice here.

Yeah. Right. Those can't handle Neo Geo and you know it. Wtf does "sealed" mean in relation to a Pi anyway?

Fucking around with early NESticle and playing all the games I had only rented or tried at friends' houses but never owned, discovering a million stupid hacks with dicks painted on everything, early translation attempts. Fucking with early DOS Snes9x and having to disable the transparency layer to see anything, but still feeling like we were doing forbidden wizard shit because the console was still semi-current and we were a Genesis house. MAME was similar to the NES in that we started wracking our brains looking for obscure ass games we had played once or twice and never saw again, and then getting current releases as they were dumped. Most of all I loved that I could finally play on a crystal clear VGA CRT with ultra sharp pixels and not on a blurry old garbage TV anymore

I was in fourth grade and my poorfag friend, who's dad got a computer once, taught me the joys of emulation and how to use some unpopular but rising site called Google to find roms and emulators. Emulation has been one thing that has helped keep me going thru the years, even when a year has only kusoge there's still great stuff in the past.

>> No.5657868

Discovered emulation with NESticle and Genecyst around Christmas 1997. I bought some WAREZ compilation CD from the greasy dude on our local market to play the original GTA.
Eventually got to poking around what else was on the disc, installed Genecyst with no real idea what an 'emulator' or 'ROMs' were. Watched their chiptuned up installer copying over 'Sonic.smd, Sonic2.smd, etc' and had a mix of excitement and 'Nah, that can't be a thing...' only to have my mind FUCKING BLOWN when I started it up.
Coincided with first getting internet access at home so it was a pretty short leap from there to 'eMuLaTiOn ToPsItEs VOTE FOR US TO ACCESS THE FILES' and diving down a rabbit hole.

Update your emulator because fuck yes. I can emulate Starfox 2 at full speed (the finished version and otherwise) and anything else as of last year, and I was behind.

Lies. If anything it's the only way around, but aside from that, Pi's can't even play a bunch of games without have a seizure.

I got my Wii hooked to a 1980 TV and there is no lag; I can do things that supposedly in only possible with tools, so there's no fucking lag.

Having actually measured both systems down to the millisecond, I'm not even going to bother with you. Oh by the way the emulators on Wii don't even have the latest changes which the Pi's do. Enjoy your Nintendo!

Nice, I started with NESticle as well. I remember early days of N64 emulation which was pretty hilarious. Getting into MAME and PS1 emulation in early 2000s was pretty neat. Never thought the emulation scene would be where it is nowadays.

It's still mind-blowing that we're at this point, I mean, as other have pointed out, the state we're in with emulation sounds like retarded totally radical DUUUUUDE talk of the late 80s. I remember "stupidly" saying to friends, "Man, wouldn't it be cool if you could have ALL the games on one game system (we did not call them consoles)?" /"Yeah, man! That'd be cool!" and we never gave it a second thought.

Emulation is magical, though. Anything below PS1/n64 has pretty much flawless emulation nowadays (unless it's bizarre)
