Last few ladders I had to finish early due to obligations and now I don't feel like running with another MF sorc or javazon or whatever cookie cutter build there is to farm wealth.
Maybe if I do make up my mind I will play BO / tank as a barb for groups, beat Hell normally afterwards, and then just craft or buy a 300% ED weapon or two and play whatever I want, hoping to trade in enough PGems for cheap gear.

When is the last time you played? The bots are not bad at all anymore. There was a time when they would join any game and spam a shitload of ads, covering the screen, then leave. These days are over, they are all banned/not enough players to make it worth it.

There are still bots playing, but they keep to themselves unless you join their baal games or whatever.

So I think the idea of "botnet" at this point is not what people have in their heads. Things have changed.

You should play right when the ladder resets. 5pm pst this Friday , this is the time that everyone is most active. Also, everyone starts from the same starting point, noone has better gear than anyone else when they start. You will also easily have 8 players in your game, which is very fun.

Don't use the CD to install the game. Register it on battle.net, then download the game directly from battle.net. You will probably get a new (longer) CD key on the website.

If you still have issues, try installing in compatibility mode for XP or some shit. If you still can't figure it out, uninstall Windows, install linux, and run on wine. It works out of the box.

I've only played Path of Exile before, how does multiplayer work in this game? I find in PoE the strongest person in the group will kill 80% of the enemies and the rest of us just trail along and kill the scraps. Are there more co-operative elements for D2, also you have to continually buy and chug pots in this, is it as bad as it sounds?

The whole reason D2 is as remembered as it is is due to the multiplayer, the whole fucking reason PoE exile even exists. You're denying yourself one of the greatest gaming experiences ever by not playing it and it's sad you won't experience it during it's golden era.

D2 has builds for every class that can work as support in one way or another, team work can help out more than in poe and ones of the best parts of D2, the part that poe still sucks dogdick at, is that it doesn't have "nuke the screen" brainlet skills, at least nowhere even close to the god awful level that poe or D3 do.

It's really not as bad as it sounds. It easy enough to keep your health up with lifesteal, and mana isn't too difficult either, enough pots drop to keep you full the majority of the time and you can refill at the shop with a single click.

If you're autistic enough, which desu if we're playing diablo or poe, odds are you are, singleplayer alone can be enough fun. I would recommend using either PlugY or Gomule depending on your version of the game, which gives infinite stash space. Though I wouldn't use them for your very first playthrough.

What class are you thinking of starting with? Most people go with the sorceress as she's the most powerful end game and has an honestly overpowered movement skill, but all the classes are still quite fun and varied too. They all tend to play rather differently.

In answer to your query neither that nor the stealth is very useful to the merc. Obtain 1 more io rune or Lum, then go to Fara in norm a2 and get 3os or 2os, and make either a lionheart or smoke.

I was super excited for revive, and had been waiting to max skeleton mastery before I skilled it, but holy shit are they lackluster. I could handle the short duration but it's the fact that they really suck at following you and just despawn if they get too far. I guess it's really not a great skill until you get an Enigma.

Anything that's a nasty melee monster like balrogs, urdars or frenzytaurs. Urdars in particular have crushing blows on nightmare and hell and make good support for bossfights.

Boss minions keep their cool stats, urdars and the like have crushing blow, depending on the boss you're fighting monsters with slow effects or high immunities are great e.g. pit lords against diablos fire.

and yeah teleport makes it 10x more usable, you don't need enigma tho, just buy a tele charge staff/amulet or use Naj's Puzzler.

Bnet is probably only worth it if you intend to play with people you know, but then again you can always use a service for that like Hamachi or a private server.

The only people who really play on Bnet's ladder every new season are those active on d2jsp who are intimately familiar with the item trading scene and use customized sorc bots to run farming routes while they're not actively playing. You'll get plenty of fun public games (with 90% sorceress characters) in the first two weeks, but after that it rapidly dries up after everyone retreats into their own private bubbles to farm for their Tristram runs. This all goes 10x if you're playing hardcore.

tl;dr - it's fun at first, then you're basically alone again without the benefits of SP mods.

Any modders here able to help me out? Just started playing with the modding tools a few hours ago and am very confused with one thing.

All I'm trying to do is re-write the skill description text. I've extracted the string.tbl file from d2data.mpq and changed a single character from an a to and e in a skills description, just for testing/learning purposes. I re-add the .tbl file and the game now crashes on launch.

No, you'll eventually get to the point where they drop frequently enough/you don't need to use them as often. You can also cube 3 health pots+3 mana and one gem to make a rejuv. As well as doing 3 regular rejuvs into one big one.

Are you using an infinite stash mod? If not then just wait a little longer, you'll get the cube soon and can fuse them together to make stronger ones.

Revives for the merc and repairs get expensive later on. You can also gamble.

Use either PlugY or Gomule depending on your version. 1.13 for plugy and 1.14 for gomule. Infinite stash for singleplayer.

Go with what you think looks interesting/fun. It's your first playthrough, just enjoy it without immediately being a meta faggot. Though telekinesis, teleport and static field are all decent for a quick recommendation.

Blade fury doesn't require gear, because virtually all of your damage comes from the skill itself. The physical damage it adds adds directly to your weapon damage, without the penalty it says it has (making it about the same as 1/4th of a Grief). Also, remember to never use two-handed weapons, blade fury has an invisible penalty that makes it deal half damage with two-handers.

What is a conversion mod? I'm going to assume you mean mods with significant changes. If you mean total conversion, then Back to Hellfire, The Black Parade, Netherworld Rises and Le Royaume des Ombres are your only picks.

Has uberquests, but they are very refrained in comparison to most mods. Still follows a completely normal Diablo 2 story, just with Touhou names replacing things.

If you're not using the infinite stash, then nah, just sell em. Later on you will be able to re-roll them to try and get a better stat, but you need it to drop in the highest difficulty and off a strong boss, not worth hanging onto them right now.

Runes you can fuse together to increase them to the next rank, I'd look up the runeword list and see if there are any early level ones you like, then see if you are in range of getting them. If you're getting like 5 eth runes or whatever in your stash, just sell/drop them.

Tip for ya, you can press enter and type in "/players #". Replace the hash with a number from 1-8 and it simulates having that many players in your game i.e. it makes the monsters harder to kill and more powerful, but they give more item drops and more XP. Most people turn the number up to where it doesn't change your kill speed much, but gives more reward. Quite useful when you find yourself overkilling enemies.

There are always rare items that'll increase your efficiency at all stages of the game but I've finished the game on all difficulties with items I've picked up.

If you want to do it faster, but your map has the waypoint a fair walk away, you can go into "other multiplayer", "tcp/ip" and host a game, then quit that and open singleplayer again. This resets your maps so you can jump through the waypoint again and hopefully it's closer to the tower. You can get them right next to eachother if you're lucky.

Items dropped is more complicated. Basically every monster has a chance to drop no items, 1 item, 2 items etc etc. Every monster has a specific cap on the max amount of possible drops, but the player setting decreases the chance for a no-drop for each theoretical item. Regular enemies e.g. the 'white' ones drop more the higher the player count, super uniques, uniques and champions will always only drop 2, 1 and 1 items respectively. So it doesn't effect them. For act bosses the no drop chance is gone at players 5 and almost gone at players 3. You can look up the specifics for each boss as they're slightly different depending on their level.

Sometimes it's not worth the effort when you could just rush through an area of shit enemies i.e. ones that take ages to kill, or move around all the time, so you can get to a better area faster. More efficient.

Like I try to burn through act 3 and 4 as fast as possible, because 5 mins into act 5 there is a guaranteed boss pack spawn right next to a waypoint, they're all melee and easy to deal with. Crank it up to players 8 and grind out levels real fast. Can take you from level ~25 to 40 in no time at all in normal.

Early on it's often worth spending time figuring out just how much you 'overkill' an enemy, like if say fireball kills an enemy by doing 450 damage, but the enemy only has 100 health, then you incur basically no downside putting the game up a few player counts.

You can set up a fairly convincing kicker build by gambling for boots or twinking out something like War Travelers. Kickers are good at stacking crushing blow on stuff. You can also hybridize that build with Death Sentry for some additional AoE.

Phoenix Strikers can also be pretty fun. Really, a lot of stuff can beat Hell difficulty, so if that were your threshold of "viable", then PStrikers will work well.

Yeah this. I turn down to players 1 for shit zones (arcane sanc, maggot lair, act 3 sewers, outdoors act 4, all the tunnel areas of act 5) and crank it up for nice, wide open zones to gather a huge pack and aoe. Cow level is good for exp too.

You enter game and want to find high runes. That is why it does not happen. The game knows this and agitates you.

You must play game for fun and not focus on anything. Then you will get surprised when Griffon or Shako drop in one month of play out of the blue while fags like Dbrunski and Llama wait for it for over two years.

My merc is getting wiped out in act 1 hell. I just barely killed Andy w 9 max skeles, 4 Mages, 4 revives, and a half max clay.
I replaced his upped Rattlecage w a slightly better curiass. Still only 700def w Tal helm though.

Quantity is difficult, you just have to wait for them to drop. One way to do it is find a massive group of weak enemies and aoe them, the fallen camps in the cold plains should be easy.

Upgrading the gems is easy though, there are shrines called "gem shrines" that spawn randomly, they pick a gem randomly in your inventory and upgrade it to the next level. Best place to farm for those shrines is in the cold plains or stony field via save-quit and running through a waypoint to check the nearby shrine/s. Each time you save and quit, shrine types are reset. Except for wells, health and mana shrines.

You can crank out perfect, or whatever rank gem you're after, fairly quickly.

But desu m8, eventually you're gonna have more gems than you need. There's not much point farming them unless you REALLY want or need them.

Honestly just save 2 of each chipped as you'll need those in NM when you start upgrading mid runes. Unless you're checking chests and graves in NM (even then) chipped don't really drop. Next I'd cube up until I had 1 of ea perfect. I'd also save all topazs until you have 2-3 perfects for your helm for increased magic find.
By the time you need anything else you'll be able to farm them quickly.
Also w gem shrines if you don't have any gems in your inventory (cube doesn't count) it drops a random chipped. Which can be helpful in NM if you need one. I've gotten lucky.

Get TortoiseSVN, an explorer shell extension, make a folder for kolbot and run SVN checkout on the link in the picture. Of course corroborate that link on google as the kolbot repository, don't just blindly trust anon's pictures. There is a similar SVN repository for Etal, but I prefer Kolbot's pathing and AI over Etal's when it comes to characters that walk. Etal is fucking great as long as you have nig.

To get everything set up you will usually need some java, more time, and a lot of patience. Note PlugY and bots do not mix (unstable and dangerous), so it's also finite stash, mules, LAN games, and standard rules from here out; some simple -direct -txt modding required to activate ladder-only runewords is possible. Honestly I recommend you just run plugy unless you are fiercely committed, but there you are.

This might be silly to ask, but maybe instead of anticipating the need to spam Andy/Meph, maybe just don't put that in your gameplan at all?
Just do the solo self-found challenge with whatever build you want, there are servicable untwinked builds for every class.
I burnt myself out on MF Sorceresses years ago so I don't make them for that purpose anymore, I never play the same class twice in a row, I also can't be arsed to farm Meph/Andy.
D2 endgame is player-definable anyway, after doing the ubers you have nothing else to do outside of PvP anyway (and PlugY ubers are really easy compared to their cbn equivalent, you can beat them with a smiter wearing Normal and Nightmare uniques), and any character can be a "grailer", too.
Just try going from start to finish and kill Hell Baal with solo self-found on a class you like and only do bossrunning when you feel like it, imho

play a Bonemancer. Bone spear plays pretty similar to Lightning, and you'll have shit like bone wall and curses for crowd control.
Or play a Fire or Wind druid. Dump points into Fissure and just lololololololololol straight through Normal and Nightmare. Do a reset to a windy druid build because Fire druid kind of drops off towards the end of nightmare.

For your merc? Just cube sockets into a Voulge or Bill which gives you a 50% chance of 4 sockets. They're found in NM cow quickest.
I just went w an ethereal 4os scythe I found in the NM durance (chest drop I think) that will allow you to clear act 1 Hell and search for a Partizan in the jail, cloister, or tower (kill all goats, avoid wraiths) and cube and hope for 5os to make an Obedience.

Sorc yes, but not fast, as for everything else? Partially with some builds, but not the whole thing unless you count skipping half of the enemies.

P8 hell is pretty intense even with decent gear sometimes, it's quite the jump from norm/nightmare p8 and even p1 hell.

I have heard that the summoner can do it naked. But I don't really find that build all that exciting. I remember I did a godly bowazon via hero editor and tried out p8 hell. I got very, very lucky with my windforce, got it within a few months of starting my grail. Dropped in worldstone keep level 2 or 3. Was nice cause it's been my favorite item since D1.

I've also dropped a 40/15 jewel and a 39/15 jewel, put one in the windforce and one in guillaumes face.

Because every other game puts the loot part too far ahead of the the actual game part...and I'm not just talking about gameplay either. Not to say that the gameplay wasn't great for it's time, but music, atmosphere, dialogue. No one puts in as much effort anymore in those areas for a game like this. Yes compared to today, D2 feels kinda crap to play, but accounting for time it still blows everything else out of the water.

The devs of today have assumed that overpowered feeling skills, "fluid" gameplay and much more consistent dopamine drops are what people want....and you normies prove them right every fucking time by eating that slop right up and asking for the next one.

D2 had a fantastic balance of decent feeling gameplay, rewarding loot and a great story/world to hold it. Diablo 3 has incredible feeling gameplay, but dogshit loot depth and a below mediocre story, plus the wow influences on the artstyle fucked it too.

Path of exile has great loot, middling world, but god awful feeling gameplay.

Grim dawn feels pretty good, has great loot, but no one gives a fuck about the world or characters, and it's kinda generic in that aspect too.

After all these years I'm beginning to think either the audience doesn't exist to necessitate this kind of "has everything" game...or the industry literally cannot make it and D2 was a fluke for it's time. It's possibly both.

maybe I've just spoiled with the LK layout on my sorc with 2 of the chest areas, so on p8 I generate so many items per run that there's nearly always a gem of some kind. they're also both very close to the waypoint so with teleport it probably takes less than a minute to pop the chests, kill a champion mob or two and then move onto the next game.

I did some runs as a test and timed myself to see how long it would take before getting a specific flawless from LK chests on my current map setup. I picked ruby before starting out. the first run took less than a minute. by the second I already dropped a flawless emerald and sapphire. In about 3 and half minutes, I managed to drop a flawless ruby from one of the chests in less than 5 full runs.

repairing the odd durability stays pretty low across most of the items you're gonna end up using. The highest repair cost you're likely to come across in a casual playthrough is repairing charges.
For something on the end of the scale, like a Fortitude in a superior elite armor with increased durability, it's almost impossible to keep up with repair costs unless you're constantly selling things for max gold. a single durability point lost costs thousands and thousands of gold to the point that it's easier to just wait for it to break entirely and repair it with a Ral rune.

I am pretty sure this is my final screenie of the 8 grenadier sins unless something really odd happens. I am getting towards the end of nightmare, and immunes are starting to appear regularly. To deal with FI, they have to resort to their second maxed skill, Shock Web (which actually puts out quite a few caltrops because the synergy effect of Fire Blast increases them).

But the damage on both the shock field and the grenade are getting pathetic, even though I am continually ticking synergies to both. They simply are not keeping up with monsters' hp and resists. Probably going to have to respec to trapsins before the end of nightmare if I want to keep this team going. Kind of looking forward to lighting up the display with traps though. 40 Traps. That is as many as four tens. And that's terrible.

Don't use a diadem. They are a unique case where the affix level is always over 90 no matter the character. You can imbue diadems with new characters and get anything.

High level imbue gives huge odds of staffmod skills, so anything with staffmods is best, which include the class-specific items but also scepters, wands, and such.

Some uniques have the stat a bit higher than most, too. Like gladiators bane rolls up to 20, gerkes sanctuary to 16. Combined with a bit of % reduction, good block chance and a bit of HP investment you can make a near unkillable paladin, even without taking lifesteal or resistance into account.

The stat is also useful in pvp, where damage taken is already reduced by a significant amount, to 17% from memory and % reduction caps at 50% of that. So any flat damage reduced is quite powerful from that point.

in pvm there is poison and mana burn to worry about; mana burn, which is bugged, always depletes the entire blue orb. But outside of these, you will indeed be invulnerable to all the rest of the pvm content

some sets are great, especially in early levels and for easy ways to get certain stats like Magic Find and attack rating.
Angel's Amulet and Ring give a nice early boost to attack rating.
Arctic hands/belt and vidala's feet/amulet can be worn for a quick and easy 90% MF. Vidala's full set also gives 50% chance of piercing attack really early which is nice for Bowzons.
Iratha's crown is just nice by itself for resistances. 30% fire 30% lightning in a lvl15 helm is fucking nice. Stack it with Iratha's gloves for 20% IAS as well and 30% cold resist.
Sigon's shield gives a nice early +1 all skills. Helm gives nice attack rating boost per lvl, body gives 30% Lightning resist, gloves give 30% IAS, boost give 50% MF and 40% Cold resist.
Berserker's gear is a nice melee weapon (+50% attack rating is sick), +barb skills, +fire resist.
Civerb's amulet is 40% regenerate mana which is a lot on just 1 item. stacks nicely with stealth runeword.
Cleglaw's set has 30% crushing blow, 50% Deadly strike, 30% boost to attack rating. Nice for melee characters.
Hsarus boots give nice fire resist early too.
I use Tancred's helm on my merc for the 10% damage boost until I get him something better. Boost and amulet stack together nicely giving 78% MF, resists, faster run walk and regen stamina.

In general a lot of good low level starter gear that'll blast you straight through to end of Nightmare without having to worry about checking blues and yellows that have dropped or without having to load vendors over and over to get a stat you want. if you do it right you can mix n match multiple sets and a runeword or two at once to get some nice boosts to resists, MF, IAS and attack rating.

Some sets straight up suck though and very few sets are viable in Hell or endgame. Tal Rasha's, Aldur's, IK are good endgame.

Mav's Diadem (G-face is better, but I am a guy who goes for looks when I can)

(I forgot my second ring, I think I swapped it for different things)

Then you max kick, venom, death sentry, and shadow clone (good tank), and get a lot of one point wonders. I think the kicksin used the most spell keys of any of my characters that I've used.

You dragon-talon (teleport) onto something you want dead, kill it, lay sentries, and continue to kill and have the sentries corpse explosion for massive AoE damage. You'll want to use burst of speed sometimes, but mostly Fade for resists and damage reduction.

This build can also kill ubers if your gear is perfect enough and you have really good charms.
