Seiken Densetsu 3 will forever be the real name of the game. This trials of mana bullshit is the only thing they could come up with because nintendo never wants to name something what it actually is when it doesn't make it overseas because that would mean that the people that translated it or having as the title in its series with appropriate number or romaji'd from japanese were 'right' and nintendo doesn't like doing that.

That's because Seiken 1 came out as Final Fantasy Adventure, and Seiken 2 as Secret of Mana. It doesn't make sense to make it "Secret of Mana 2", because it's unrelated to SoM1. Same stuff with Earthbound/Mother. It wouldn't make sense for Mother 3 to be "Earthbound 2".

And the series never had any official romanization in the West, except for the word "Mana". So Trials of Mana is fitting.

That's a good point. A lot of times a direct translation would sound lame or just a collection of words put into an awkward order. Something like "Castlevania" is far more creative and evocative a title than "Demon Castle Dracula"
