Shinobi has a slow, deliberate sort of strategic gameplay. Ninja Gaiden has a completely different action and platforming approach

Literally the only common feature is the ninja theme. They are as comparable as a Mario to a Sonic Mario is better though

The problem with sonic is as fun as the core gameplay was it was hard to expand on because there's not much that works with running fast besides running and jumping. If he starts picking things up or interacting with the environment or anything now you've compartmentalized the gameplay and are slowing down the pace of what's supposed to be a fast game.

They were already grasping at straws by the time Sonic CD rolled around and so they came up with stuff like the past/future dynamic which was kind of interesting but seemed more like a diversion than an integral component.

No it doesn't, if you just keep running non stop you keep the enemy spawns consistent and can figure out good strategies to deal with each screen, otherwise the respawns can be really annoying. Revenge requires a lot of stopping and overall moves at a pretty slow pace, even by the standards of its own series.

My point wasn't that they should have kept making entire games that resembled green hill zone, the point was that trying to do something different while still maintaining the core gameplay fans liked is problematic, if not impossible at a certain point.

Franchises like Castlevania and Shinobi have had the same problem, you either become repetitive (the GBA /DS castlevnia games) or change so drastically it doesn't even resemble the original anymore (Lords of shadow, PS2 Shinobi). I think some series are just products of a certain era and are good for a limited number of installments and that's actually ok.

Strider 2 is kino except that you literally can't lose. I prefer games that most retro enthusiasts consider "too easy" and even I thought this game lacked any challenge. If you keep playing you will win, no skill required.

That said I like all the Strider games, including the remake.

3K is super fucking good, easily the best game on the Genesis, I'd actually say it's most comparable to Yoshi's Island in sheer quality

Also the only games that come close imo are Rocket Knight, Castle of Illusion, Gunstar Heroes, Ristar, and Dynamite Headdy
