Which retro 2D Mario game is the best?

Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 is also an option, even though it's not in the image.

>> No.5651558

smb3 shits on them all, and smb/smb2 are some hella good games to be shitting on.

MB > SMB > SMB2 > SMB3 > SMW

I like the original SMB the most because mario is fat as fuck. He's huge and you have to commit to your momentum
If I can be more specific
VS SMB > SMB > SMB2 (Japan)

They're all great, but:

1 > 3 > World > 2 > USA > Mario Bros.

3 is the best.

World was always my favorite. Also, I think Land 2 is legitimately underrated, even if it is a Mario game.

This was basically the most common answer you would get throughout all of the 2000's if you asked what the best 2D Mario title was. Did you forget that, or were you too busy in pre-K?

It's overrated, but Land 1 is underrated.

smb3 gba, but since that's not retro all stars mario 3

To everyone that says SMB3 is the best, why do you think so? I always liked SMW way better than SMB3

>> No.5652157

I always loved 2. I don't think it's the best, but it's definitely the most unique. Something about it just feels different, like it's a mario game from another timeline or something. It's less arcadey than the others, and they seem to have gone back on their decision to move mario in that direction afterward.

Mate, I thought it controlled like shit even back then. The second Super Mario Land was a vast improvement in every way.

Get used to the control.

I played Super Mario Bros on the NES first, and that game controls perfectly. I shouldn't have to "get used to" a giant step backwards like that.

Wow, you really pwnd that n00b epic style with your bideogame reference. DAE real life is just like my favorite bideogames? I bet he just stands around and lets Link break all his pots to get rupees and hearts XD Epic Win!

Better art direction, better two-player mode (fight over toad houses and cards in original mario bros, shorter levels so you don't have to wait forever for your turn), more variety in power-ups, each world is completely unique.
That's why I like it better, but that's just, like, my opinion, man

2 (donkey picnic) and 3 are the best. It's impossible to choose between them. World is also great I could see how some people like it better. I've played the games a zillion times and it feels like World doesn't hold up as well over multiple play throughs, probably because the actual platforming doesn't require much precision. But, on a first playthrough, discovering that world and all those secrets is an amazing experience.

1 and Lost Levels are also great games.

>> No.5652802

World, but I like all of them so whatever.

>> No.5653276

The first game has the tightest controls, but 3 is a stronger game overall. World was a step backwards from 3, and I like the US version of 2, but it's really its own thing.

Super Mario Maker is the best.

Complaining about the control downgrade from SMB to Land, but you're calling SML2--the game with the worst physics and control in the entire series--an improvement in every way. OK.

>> No.5653689

>>5653686
SML controls much worse than SML2

>> No.5653708

>>5653689
It controls worse than SMB, which probably has the best physics and control of any platformer in existence, but SML2 by comparison is a joke.
