This is my personal DOOM starter pack. It includes the official games, the expansions, but more importantly - a collection of 168 maps and an assortment of mods suggested by anons here, pulled from Cacowards, and just stuff I like.

It comes with a README that explains stuff, so it should be safe to link to your friends who don't know squat about Doom. I tried to make it as friendly as possible, but feedback is of course welcome.

!!! DISCLAIMER !!! this MEGA I just linked is just the DOOM directory in the second mega from the OP (which includes other retro stuff such as Quake). So there's no need to add this link too, since it's already included inside there.

Excellent level design, alright weapons, a snazzy ambient soundtrack, and surprising difficulty until you get the hang of enemy behavior. Movement will feel much less 'slip-slidey' and more solid than Doom; if you've played Half-Life or any other Valve game, Quake's movement will feel very familiar. The super shotgun is not as powerful as the Doom super shotgun. Use explosives gratuitously.

You don't have to.
You can tell your gzdoom.ini (it's in ~/.config/gzdoom) where to look for your files, so if you're doing it manually you just type the name.

I felt it would be redundant, seeing as I included the IWADs and expansions by themselves - I don't know if it would lead to some sort of conflict or incompatibility with certain mods or whatnot. Is there a current wadsmoosh that also includes SIGIL, e1m4b, and e1m8b? If so could you link me to it?

I also felt it would be redundant as many of the WADs featured there are already available individually in the folder, and I typically prefer to load the one map I'm going to play instead of choosing in-game - but I'll add it as well.

Boring game with nothing but brown on grey enviroments. Like a parody of ''the boring military shooter'' except it came first.
Enemies that just kind of exist with no cohesiveness, who vary between ''why does this even exist is it even fighting back'' to ''wow whoever made this is a cunt'' in difficulty, often very sharpy.
Boring weapons that barely animate when shot with okay sound effects.
Basically, a functional shooter that lacks a soul, made of a hodge podge of random ideas thrown together into a pile.

It's almost the most fun to start on Medium difficulty.

The shotgun doesn't seem strong at first, but it's actually deceptively useful, given its tight spread, thus long range.

The grenade launcher has a weak range, but once you get used to it, it becomes pretty useful, particularly given that you're going to need explosives. Until you get a rocket launcher, the grenade launcher will remain one of your most important weapons.

Melee enemies can sometimes reach around closing doors or pillars as you dodge and weave around them, try to keep a bit of distance.

Look upwards sometimes, things may occasionally be hidden in plain view.

Why in God's name are you using Winquake? It barely even runs on most modern systems. It fucks with your resolution and display colors, requires significant config tinkering to run correctly, it can't play any of the huge amount of custom maps that need expanded limits, it can't even play the fucking soundtrack unless you mount a virtual copy of the Quake CD.

If you really want the original look with colormap-based lighting and jittery polygons, at least use Mark V's software renderer.

Newbie to Hideous Destructor here. I was watching Eric's recent videos playing through E1M1, M2, and M3 again, and I had a few questions, was hoping anons here could enlighten me

At least from my limited gameplay, blue armor seems to have bailed me out of very difficult situations that I'm not sure I would have survived with green armor, and it seems to always last me enough to find a replacement before it runs out. And even playing at 1.0 encumbrance I haven't felt it weigh me down that significantly. But maybe I'll reexamine that and try using green only, see how that goes

A related question, is armor quality a binary thing (ie it works or it doesn't) or does it decrease proportional to its durability state? If it decreases, is it a linear relation or larger than that?

It slows you down and the extra defense isn't applied often since it only counts for chest hits. It gets shredded quickly too. Almost never worth it over green armor.

The loadout I used there was intended to pack as much firepower as possible while staying under 400 units. The brontornis and select-fire ZM are a little heavier than a ZMGL, but bolts take out bosses more easily than grenades. Once I get a backpack, I can stash the brontornis and use a ZMGL for non-boss combat instead. Soulspheres also give more weight to work with, so I'll switch if I get one of those too.

My understanding is that armor works more or less the same until it falls below 7 durability, at which point it basically stops working at all. Blue armor hits that point way faster than green.

see, I'm the one to remind you and everyone who raises concern about Doom 'stealing from Quake' by mentioning that Quake 1 was the first offender by having centered weapon models, shootable switches, a double barrel shotgun, a rocket launcher, the entirety of the HUD lifted almost verbatim from Doom, half the enemy roster having parallels to Doom's, not to mention the key hunting, and the puzzle-like approach to nearly every map.

So since the new DOOM is supposedly having you fight angels, let's talk about angel enemies
I've had an idea stuck in my head for a while of this basically being a flying archvile sans revival. It would float around like a caco/pain elemental and use an attack similar to the archvile's hitscan, where you have to get to cover before you burst into flames. It would probably have to be weaker than the archvile's flame burst, but you could also put multiple in an area at once to keep pressure on the player (where their mobility would force you to get more creative with hiding spots). Is this a good concept from a gameplay perspective?

Doubt. Quake is more or less 'Doom except muddier and you can jump', or just 'Quake except you look up or down if you want to go ask your average joe. you'd have to be really fucking stubborn not to be able to draw the parallels between the two and not recognizing them getting flak for it.

There's an older version in the vrskins skin pack that's lower res, but I uploaded my full size version on The Sentinel's Playground WAD site.

Google the website and click on WADs on the left, then Filter in the top left and type in 'lacrimosa' and it should bring up a download link. Doesn't work with certain mods (like brutal doom) and engine wise I usually load it with Zandronum so dunno if it functions right in GZDoom.

Doom as an IP has a lot going for it from a market perspective. 2016 sold very well obviously, and Eternal is getting hyped up and looking to be an easy 8/10 or 9/10 sales machine that will make big bucks. On top of this, Romero finished and released his new map pack for the original Doom. Doom went from "that old shooty game boomers won't shut up about," to "Holy shit Doom is back," and basically a total opposite of how Duke turned out with DNF.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they whored the franchise out a bit by sticking the dude into other games to further the hype machine. I can't imagine any company not appreciating the extra publicity "HEY WE GOT DOOMGUY" would bring, and something like a DLC fighter in MK is just more marketing for the franchise that has extra impact on consumers that might not be normally interested or reached by the normal marketing.

No, the very very end of Monster Bait, right before you go in to fight the boss Cerberus. You just have to use a pillar, which lowers itself, and a door opens up and there is fire behind the door. Walk into the fire to beat the level. You can use a numerical rating if you think there's a sufficient powergap between the overall difficulties of two consecutive WADs in your list. If you have any experience pistol starting them, you should mention that too (if it made a big difference in the difficulty or not, for example). They're noisy, and once you know one's around they're rather predictable in how they'll act. DERPs will spot them regardless of their cloak, and you can take them out pretty reliably yourself with the slayer or autopistol. Without those, punch to get it off of you, then immediately spray the same general area because a punch doesn't keep them away for long. If you hit it while cloaked, it'll bleed, and if you kill it the corpse will fade in gradually. Kick the corpse if it wasn't cloaked when you shot it to make sure it's dead.

Absolutely disappointed and it sucks, them moving away from pre-spawned enemies throughout a segmented labyrinth and only stationary health packs and armor to this horde mode singular arenas with max 12 enemies at a time that stutter around wondering what to do when you shoot them once so you can do a glory kill and the way they kill the modding for the game just fucking does it for me.
And they are also milking it as much as they can with giving skins for pre-orders when you could have just given the option for modders to do what they want...
It blows because they didn't do a bad job with the artstyle and graphics, the soundtrack too, I'm not super into it but it's not a bad soundtrack at all.

Pistol starts are just better design in general.

Look at nuDoom, where you always keep accumulating and by the time you get the BFG every fight is the same.

Pistol starts allow you to design the map in interesting ways, in Doom2 there's a room full of pinkies and a rocket launcher, in Doom1 there's a room full of pinkies with a berserker pack - so both encounters feel different while in nuDoom they would effectively be the same.

I agree with the other anon that pistol start leads to more interesting map design. Maybe a map is entirely lacking the SSG, or the rocket launcher, or maybe it gives you weapons in a bizarre order (e.g. MAP03 of Plutonia gives you a rocket launcher and has a hidden chainsaw, and nothing else besides the weapons you can steal from shotgunners and chaingunners). It also makes the maps where they just give you every fucking weapon at the start and tell you to go ham more unique, since that isn't just every single map in your playthrough.
Playing without pistol start is alright if you're new to the game, but almost all maps official and unofficial are designed with pistol start in mind and you lose some of the experience for certain maps that intend to limit your weaponry or ammo count.

Since people are suddenly posting about both the new DE armor and general doom merchandise, I suppose there's no better time to tell that photos of the McFarlane figure have surfaced, along with a collector's statue I've never seen before.

The reason Mancubus was always such a threat was it only seemed to aim one projectile at you, with the other to your left or right, and alternating them, forcing you to dodge more carefully lest you run into the other shot. Every piece of media meant for mass consumption, be it music, videogames, movies or anything else that makes a profit by being entertaining, goes through a rigorous and decade tested series of labors to make it as "entertaining" to as many people as possible. Looking at the big picture that way, it's hard to enjoy anything without realizing you're a sucker.

The things I enjoy most are labors of love. Something somebody makes and creates a certain way because it's their creation and they feel an obligation towards presenting it as best they possibly can. The original DOOM games actually symbolize that pretty damned well. There's a good reason Buckethead did the music for Sigil, and not just because he's cheap.

Are these things inherently good? Not always, almost certainly not "better" than things that are rigorously panel tested and changed and tweaked to better fit the audience I'm a part of. But I take more pleasure in enjoying someone else's honest labor than being a sheep and just spend my time consuming the stuff I'm told I'm supposed to be consuming just because it's "good".

Say what you want about me, I'm a bitter man. Anyone who shits on you for being a sheep does so because we wish we could go back to just liking things we like.

ikr, why the fuck does EVERYTHING have to now be a glowing pickup? Like the last doom had it, but it felt way more subtle. The last doom had a really immersive atmosphere and level design, Eternal is looking the opposite. Looking at all this glowing bullshit is taking me out of the game and I haven't even played it yet.

The same reason enemies get glowy outlines you can't turn off, and why mutliplayer enemies will be eternally highlighted and glowing.

Every fucking inch of every map everywhere is way way WAY overdesigned and meticulously jumbled up so badly that without highlights things of importance would mesh and blend with the pile of chunky puke that is nudoom, and playtesters didn't like not being able to recognize an important pickup from far away, because that's a big classic doom feel. You're at 14 health and you spot the medkit across the room full of barons. RUN! But the effect worked because everything was flat and drab and it was easy to see shit. Now it's impossible apparently.

GZDoom would let you do that, and you can just leave out all the fancy bells and whistles, you can even render it in software mode.
You might want to check out the Spritefix project (fixes some stray pixels and sloppy sprite alignments iD never fixed), but other than that, I get that you want something that's more vanilla.

It's not my first choice, but classic Doom actually plays quite well with a modern controller with two sticks and the right binds.
It's not as good as keyboard + mouse, but it's a lot better than keyboard only, not just in ergonomics.

Blood feels like a joke now on Lightly Broiled. I'm still playing my first time but Episode 1 was hard, Episode 2 was ok, but Episode 3 and 4 are just really, really easy now. I'd be down for enemies like that as long as they didn't cover the entire fucking screen in fire. The fire overlay is the only reason why archviles are painful to fight. It causes way more disorientation and distress than it ought to.

I'd also love a mod/TC that has you fight an angelic invasion instead of or in addition to a demonic invasion.
