What are the best point and click games, especially for someone new to the genre? I've only played pic related

>> No.564925

Monkey Island Series
Sam & Max

>> No.564953

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Curse of Monkey Island, if you really want to cut your teeth. Then go back and play the first two, Secret first, then LeChuck's Revenge. Move on to Fate of Atlantis after that, Sam and Max, then play Grim Fandango, and finally finish off with some of the older games (Zak McKraken, Maniac Mansion, and Loom). I would not advise you to play Escape from Monkey Island, because it will only depress the fuck out of you because of how fucking terrible it is compared the the rest of the series.

Also take a look at some of the Sierra games. Start with King's Quest V and VI, and if you like them, move backwards to finish out the series. Also, I'd highly recommend trying out the first Gabriel Knight game, Sins of the Fathers. The second game in the series, The Beast Within is okay, but I wouldn't play it until you finish out some of the better known titles. GK3 is worth playing simply because it was fucking amazing from a technology standpoint at the time of its release.

i'd start with the monkey island series, then the rest of the lucas arts games (first maniac mansion & zak mccracken indiana jones etc..), then the sierra games. there are certainly exceptions, but sierra & lucasarts made most of the good point & click games.

pic is one of my favorite jokes in the monkey island series, which you'll only get if you cut your teeth on sierra adventure games

Journeyman Project is good.

MYST is pretty neat too.

>> No.565656

There are tons and tons i'd like to recommend but it's sleepytime.
Lucasarts and Sierra are names everyone knows and it's with good reason.
Outside of those there are great studios like Legend Entertainment, AdventureSoft, etc and lots of one-hit and one-series wonders from various companies.

Among those who've released adventure games in recent times Daedalic Entertainment really stands out in quality; Deponia 1&2, Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav, The Whispered World and A New Beginning are all worth checking out.

>> No.565941

Be warned about the Sierra PnC games because they can be the most challenging especially when you can accidentally ruin the game for yourself. The Lucasarts ones tended to just be more fun while the Sierra ones tended to be more difficult.

The Quest for Glory series is pretty easy though since it's more combat oriented than the other games and more obvious when something is going to kill you for making the wrong move.

>> No.565987

Remember Original. Director's Cut looks horrific and really shits up the early pacing with extremely easy "expanded" scenes.

>> No.566173

Grim Fandango has in my opinion the best characters out of all Lucasarts games, and the soundtrack and art direction are absolutely amazing as well. Play this game unless you hate yourself.

Curse of Money Island is much more wacky and difficult than GF, but probably a good place to get into the series. The old grogs raged over it having Disney-like graphics and just handwaving away a huge unresolved plot point from the second game. It's beautiful and a lot of fun, so fuck the neckbeards. Play Secret and LeChuck's Revenge after CoMI, then replay it on mega monkey difficulty for additional puzzles and references to the first games.

I offered it as a laid back contemplative p&c. Frankly a lot of the ones in this thread are kind of fast-paced. Myst is good to relax and zone out with. The puzzles can be a little hard though. I guess it depends what you're hoping to get out of the game as to which is the best to cut your teeth on.

>> No.566202

>>566180
Yeah playing them in order is good. That's how I did it originally. I just really liked Noir. It was a good last game in the series for me. Did you realize that they'd released The Color of Magic for C64 and Speccy back in the day? I haven't played it yet, but I'm very curious.

>> No.566213

I don't know... I'm a fan of the gabriel knight games and those sure weren't fast paced... but then again they were pretty much horror/suspense games... so that is pretty different I guess

I tend to be skeptical when I read stuff like this on 4chan since there tends to, ironically, be a huge hate for ultra-nerdy groups for no reason what so ever on this site, like I have seen a lot of hate for the SCA just because of the way members look in pictures and it's one of the nicest groups I have ever been involved with

>The majority of players could quite possibly be ugh in real life
the thing is, I have always thought it is silly for people that go here of all places to judge others this way, I know for a fact that quite a lot of 4chan users are "ugh irl", the way 4chan users look down on other groups is pathetic really, mostly because they have absolutely no right to.

Well, point-and-clicks are my favorite genre, and in the long run you should try exploring and finding out what you like best on your own, but I believe that there are a couple subsets of the genre:
>Fantasy
>Horror
>Comedy
Most of the games made are one of those three, so whichever you are the most interested in, I would try.

Also, Full Throttle is the first adventure game I recommend to friends; the story isn't too much of any one thing, and it's pretty easy.
