what does /vr/ think about Ecco the Dolphin?

>> No.5646795

Drastically more enjoyable if you save scum.

It's pretty tight

Got the first two games on Sega CD. I WANT to love them, but I just can't beat them.

Got Defender of the Future on Dreamcast, it's a beautiful game. Never played the PS2 version.

A flawed classic.
Definitely worth playing just for the experience, the art, visuals and music, and concept.
The game is decent for the most part but I won't blame you if you ragequit in the last level.

It's a beautiful game, it's just not a fun one. That's always disappointed me since I want to love it so badly. The movement actually feels like you're a dolphin, the atmosphere is mysterious, and the lore is really cool, even though I wish there was more of it. But just swimming around mazes looking for crystals gets boring, and as good as the atmosphere is, it just can't quite save it. Still a stunning display of a man with a vision though.
Also, Atlantis is the best stage even with the bullshit jump, just because that's where you finally get the lore behind what's happening

Yeah, they had to craft this whole audiovisual thing and then just had to use a boring abstraction for the actual level design. That's european gamedev for you: cool concept, cool pixel art, then add some weird afterthought of a gameplay and call it a day.

It's one of my favorite games of old. Unique but wonderful controls and and good dose of challenge. I understand why a lot of people don't care for it though.

>> No.5647253

Unique and super atmospheric but not a whole lot of fun to actually play. Don't love it, don't hate it, glad it exists.

I cheated and used some code to get to the last level and still had to save scum fifty times to beat the vortex queen. It's really easy for her to instakill you if you get sucked in and you're required to go deep inside the range for that instakill move at that point because only ramming her mouth does damage.

Also I had it for real on the Genesis when I was a kid and I don't think I ever even got up to the whale in the very beginning where you keep on finding some character who tells you to find some other character.

>> No.5647903

>>5647801
You really just meet an orca who suggests you to ask the whale and then the whale tells you about the asterite who explains things.

I really enjoyed it, was genuinly unnerved by how dark it got at times but the it was visually stunning.
