Everything about the Gradius series is so refined too. Not sure the logic behind basically giving you one life. Doesn't even make sense from a quarter munching perspective since you can't credit feed through the game. Guess they just want you to play perfectly.

There's an easy way through that screen if you know how to do it.
>Go to the edge of the platform and jump straight up, let the soldier run under you
>Back up, the enemy in the hood on the next platform will disappear and won't return
>Jump over the lower bird (or kill it during the back up move) and jump INTO the higher bird
>Land on the next platform (or the first one if you're not close enough and jump over before the next soldier comes) to continue.

I mastered this in 1989 when it first came out. Using this trick it is possible to ALWAYS make it past this part and beat the game in under 20 minutes. I'm amazed people haven't figured it out yet. The real trick is making sure you have enough hit points saved up (the bird takes away 2 bars I think) to take the extra damage on the way to the final boss.

Having infinite ammo is worse. It removes tension and forces combat to become a chore. A big pet peeve of mine is the old RPG trope where your super powerful party gets thrown in jail by a single guard once the king turns evil. I'm not even a storyfag but that always bothers me. Anytime I'm in jail in an rpg I want to stop playing.

Also rpgs where status ailment spells are basically just hogging up space in your menu because they never ever work on enemies, especially the important boss fights.

Grind is the shittiest thing that plagues the games and it will never truly go away. Grind is easy mode. It's easy mode for player because you can't misallocate your resources - you can just grind some more. Only thing stopping you is your patience. It's easy mod for developers because you don't need to balance your game - if you make players grind they will never know you fucked up balance, they will never know you only meant for them to grind 10 hours and not 20.

It absolutely is strategic when it comes to ammo and these are not particularly hard games and there are places to store your extra items. The mansion itself is not that big, the entire game is built on backtracking as the mansion is one big puzzle with paths that don't open until you've done something on another path. Even to save you have to backtrack. The only time it's ever slightly inconvenient is when you're good enough at the game that you don't use up all your healing items and you run into a new healing item that you can't store, so you simply have to leave it there and revisit it if you ever need it. To this day I have never beaten RE1 with Chris and probably never will. It's not even a difficulty thing, it's a frustration thing. Having to keep trekking back and forth to the item box is just outright annoying and not fun in the slightest. 6 slots is not enough when you generally need 1 slot for a weapon, 1 slot for ammo, 1 slot for a healing item and 1 slot for small keys, leaving you with only 2 slots to pick up the metric fuckton of items the game barrages you with from the very start. And that's just the bare minimum. Hope you don't pick up anymore ammo, herbs or ink ribbons or you have to bring them back to the box first.

There's a very good reason that the sequels started you with more inventory space and even gave you the option to expand it a little more. I don't know who in the fuck actually enjoys games with extremely limited inventory systems, retro or not.

Sorry whoever's replying to you is acting like a faggot but really the ideal way to play is with Jill for extra inventory and put all key items away until it becomes obvious you need them (i.e. a square shaped hole for your square shaped crank) and just don't worry about it. Throw first aid sprays and whatever full heals you can make in the item box and save em for bosses if you can. Save any big guns for them too, usually the only ones you need on you are a handgun (not a magnum) and a shotgun, but later on if you have to force your way through annoying enemies, it's better to use a little bit of ammo of a powerful weapon than waste twenty shotgun shells. Try to drop off save ribbons at your earliest convenience. Keep one, maybe two healing items on you, which is gonna force you to learn how to avoid getting hit, but of course you need to inventory space. Over all it's gonna require some backtracking but it's a backtracking kind of game.

I lived with two other guys when this game came out. We had friends dropping by all the time who were trying it out. Eventually all of us got to the end boss but couldn't figure out how to kill it. After a few days of frustration I threw $30 on top of the TV and told everyone to ante up. A month later I woke up for work at 6AM. One of my roommates was sitting in front of the TV still awake from the night before. He was running around the final boss in circles while repeating 'Weebles wobble but they won't fall down, Weebles wobble but they won't fall down!' (a commercial at the time for a kids toy).
I told him to quit and get some sleep. Then the helicopter came. I couldn't believe it. And one shot later it was all over. He took the $ and danced around the room for an hour repeating the phrase over and over like a mad man. Oh, the days before the internet.

Flight of the Amazon Queen was like this. You have a baseball bat in your inventory through most of the game, and you only get to use it once even though 99% of the puzzles could be solved if you could use the bat. For example, there was this part where you have to pick up item from piranha infested water, but you can't use your bare hands. In real life you would instinctively try to pick it up with any long sturdy item such as the baseball bat, but no, the game wants you to use a very complex contraption to pick it up. I understand it's mostly about the humor and creative thinking, but sometimes it's just bad design and backwards moon logic.
