>> No.5639608

I'm struggling to think of a worse one. I wonder if it's possible to edit just how much brighter it makes the enemies, if it made them really stand out or gave them like a red overlay then it'd be marginally worthwhile, but it just bumps it up by such an insignificant margin.

Stand in front of enemies and flick it on or off. It literally just makes them a little brighter, even if they're standing in the dark. I mean fuck if you were playing with the brightness turned way down so you can't see anything then it would be useful but otherwise it's pointless.

This really is it. But even this massively overstates its use because I'm using invisibility (to keep them in place, otherwise they move about and so are more easily seen anyway) AND it's one of the few dark areas of the game. In normal gameplay you would never need to use it.

I'm not sure, I think I'll just have to download the ost somewhere else and place it on the valve directory, but I dont know if xash supports .ogg format

It's something others have identified before it seems.

Honestly, it will probably be easier to use WinQuake. It still works on Windows10, and it's almost the same experience as DOSQuake.

>> No.5639695

I can't get WinQuake to work on x64 Windows 10. I even bought the Steam version and tried the free downloadable one online but neither would do it. Tried it on an older 32-bit laptop and it worked just fine.

>> No.5639697

You're in complete control over the cycle speed in DOSBox so have you been messing with the config files?

>> No.5639703

Still worth playing, there's source ports for it. Interestingly, despite using the Quake engine, it's NOT monochrome brown.

>> No.5639704

It should be in the mega, under Quake.

>> No.5639707

The reason why I'm not accepting that answer is that it used to work just fine. I could mount the CD image to the get soundtrack and everything. I tried the game for the first time in a long while this week and the speed is all over the place.

What do you want? It wasn't a Windows update. So you either changed your DOSBox config file or you "updated" DOSBox. Sometimes an older version of DOSBox works better, so use that. My DOSBox isn't giving me that problem with Quake.

Not quite sure what the issue may be. I'm running x64 Win10 myself, and WinQuake booted up on the first attempt, without any tweaking. Maybe it has to do with graphics drivers? I'm running an Nvidia GPU.
Used this version of WinQuake, though this seems to be the most common one, so it's probably what you used as well: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/idstuff/quake/wq100

Right. There has to be some setting that I've accidentally changed. There just aren't that many settings in DoxBox and I can't seem to locate the problem. The ini is relatively short.

>> No.5639721

So go to AppData>Local>DOSBOX and delete your DOSBox config. Then run DOSBox again and it should make a new, default one. If that doesn't work, look into using 0.73 or 0.74 versions of DOSBox and see if that fixes it.

If all you want is the cool slowed down dying animations, which WinQuake also has enabled by default, there's ways to enable that in the source ports.

Are you aware that GLQuake and WinQuake were made and released alongside DOS quake by the same people? It is vanilla Quake, but for Windows. Both are "official" engines of the game, not really source ports. This was 1997.. Only difference is GLQuake has faster death animations, though I think you can change this, but WinQuake is about the same as the DOS version, terrible resolution and all.

>> No.5639812

If WinQuake doesn't work, try Quakespasm.

Make a batch file with this to start the game:
start quakespasm -fitz -game id1 -listen 8

and add these lines to your autoexec.cfg in the id1 folder, if you want it to look like software, rather than GLQuake:
gl_texturemode 1
r_particles 2
r_lerpmodels 0
r_lerpmove 0

>> No.5639814

i don't really save unless im like 'stuck' if you know what i mean. otherwise i think of that like savestate abuse if your saving like every room and shit or after you kill a room of monsters
i find the games sound effects very entertaining, always have to be honest. theres just a feeling of 'fuck im running out of ammo. am i seriously gonna have to mike tyson some shit' or 'that room down there sounds kinda scary' and hearing doom guy grunt as i get pelted by fucking chain gunners that drop 10 freaking bullets.

>> No.5639815

Actually just ignore me. GLQuake was made by ID but I'm not quite right in what I said so it's explained along WinQuake here:

tl;dr WinQuake is pure vanilla. GLQuake was made by ID and released January 1997 so it's pretty "vanilla" too but technically not. Software-rendered version is the way to go, sorry for the misinformation.

>> No.5639816

Did you hit some uncap hotkey by mistake? Dosbox probably has something like that.

>> No.5639825

Running out of ammo in Doom 2? Oh wow. Been a long time since that happened to me. There's a ton of it! Feels like I wouldn't need any secrets to get through it these days. Should give that a shot. Hm.

Are you playing on HMP or UV?

>> No.5639826

My first time playing through these games I always feel like I have to abuse the saving. No idea why. Then after that every time I re-run through a level I never save and it's more fun.

>> No.5639836

Alt-F12 unlocks the framerate but it seems to have no effect. The strange thing is that with a PC as powerful as mine, nothing in a game like Quake should really be able to slow down an uncapped game, but when I uncap Dosbox, the game still has inconsistent speed based on the circumstances.

>> No.5639838

I keep trying to like this fucking game and finding myself pissed off at how fucking slow this game seems to want me to play. The level design is rife with low-supply levels where you're supposed to whittle down spongey enemies with a shotgun or something at a leisurely pace or cramped hallways where you're supposed to whittle down a horde one at a time, but the game is a fucking BORE playing like that. All of the rep doom has is that it's super fast and aggressive even compared to modern shooters but this game I've been playing over and over is a dungeon crawler with guns.

Should I just jump to Quake?

>> No.5639840

>Should I just jump to Quake?
Uhh Quake is notorious for all the things you just described while still being a great game though. Way way more so than Quake.

>> No.5639842

I mean way more than Doom. Quake's enemies are way spongier than Doom's, there's less of them and you will find yourself running out of ammo often in Hard mode.

>> No.5639845

Doom is famously easier the faster you play it. Meaning you can either jump through the levels like a madman as fast as you can or you can crawl through them killing everything very slowly like you said. Prepare for people here to tell you to lower the difficulty if you're doing the second one though.

>> No.5639850

Sounds like Quake is adjusting its speed to a variable CPU clocking.

Maybe you altered the settings of the CPU clock the game measures its speed through. maybe you set it to something like "auto" or "dynamic" so that it gives you better performance, while jumping allover the place?

Play progressive then, keep the stuff you find in the last level and apply previously scavenged firepower later.

In Doom 2 you can find a rocket launcher hidden in the first map, giving you two rockets, but there's fuckall worth using that ordnance on in that map, playing progressively means that you can use that nice little reward for something more serious later on.

>> No.5639890

You can do that, of course, and that's fun, but my point is that there's only some greenhairs and imps in Entryway, and they're pretty simple to handle with just the pistol and shotgun, or the chainsaw even.

>> No.5639891

But then you find every weapon super early, the progression each map clearly intends you to follow is gone, and the start of every map where they expect you to have a pistol and a shotgun at best is pathetic.

So the dilemma is either play the maps as they were actually balanced and intended or play the maps as slow dungeon crawlers until you can get something beyond the shotgun which can't quickly kill anything above an imp.

IMO as someone playing doom for the first time and having very mixed opinions on the gameplay, some of the modern lighting options and stuff in zdoom just don't look right. I tried out chocolate doom and had to go back because zdoom is just too convenient, but I much preferred the vanilla look.

Dated visuals are just part of the appeal of old games, frankly. There's a PC version of MGS1 and despite looking better than the PS1 version the whole thing just feels worse without the omni-present jaggies and fog of the console version.

that's the problem, pistol start in UV on this map is just a grind, and if you die you start all over again, I don't mind dying but I hate grinding out monsters, it's not fun, it's why I like Sigil so much, reasonable level length and no grinding out of huge monster rooms

It just feels more like circle strafing and making sure you grab health packs more than it feels like skillful planning and execution

"Intent" is meaningless here - they tested every map in pistol start, but they also programmed the game and ordered the maps to play continuously and have pistol starting only happen as a punishment if you die or if you hop to a level with a cheat. Both are valid ways to play the game.

I play everything pistol start, but if you're not having fun with it, just play continuous, especially because it sounds like this is your first time playing. It's truly not as game-breaking as you imagine it, especially in Doom 1 where you lose your weapons at the beginning of every episode. All it will do is let you have more choices immediately as opposed to finding those choices only through scouring for secrets, which seems to be what you're looking for.

It's like saying that Mega Man is meant to be played with the P-shooter only because they let your do it. Yes, you could, and people who have played the game for a long time do, but the game is designed to let you carry weapons over for a reason.

Are there situations where Berserk's after effects will inevitably kill you? I'm starting a map at yellow health because of ~40% burns and ~20% treated wounds. In fact I haven't seen anything that is even remotely similar to Castle's and Iwakura's visuals. The layouts are shaped in an 8 form, that means you always progress in a linear way but often reenter previous areas from different angles. It isn't even a universal thing to "vasyan" things, as that's a derogatory nickname for people who make and clamor for badly put together High-Definition mods.
There's still a bunch of Russians who make and play more normal Doom things, and they've put out some good maps over the years.
Epic 2 I think even was nominated for a Cacoward back in the day.

Some of the totally vasyan stuff you see in Russian modding and indie communities are ironic though and made as just complete shitposts.
If you look at Heroes 3 modding, some of that is shitposts, and a lot of the other stuff is pretty experimental, varying all over the place in quality (some stuff looks like garbage, some is so well made and authentic visually that you'd be mistaken for thinking it was official).
Also Vasyan as posted here is a troll persona, don't take his bait, just report.

No because you spawn on it. However, falling down makes it a point of no return.

>> No.5641965

Not particularly.

Make their behavior different somehow:
>maybe the monster run faster
>maybe he's got the +ALWAYSFAST flag, so he'll do ranged attacks very often while you're in his line of sight (this would make the basic shotgun baldie more dangerous than ever, for instance)
>maybe his ranged attack is homing
>maybe his ranged attack bounces against surfaces
>maybe his ranged attack is a moving projectile, but it's really fast and you need to be very proactive in dodging
>maybe his ranged attack is a +RIPPER
>maybe he teleports away for a second on his pain state
>maybe this type of monster cannot be tricked into infighting
>maybe he's highly resistant against bullets and shot and you need to use an explosive weapon on him to really damage him
>maybe he has some dangerous effect on death, such as exploding, and you need to run away when he does
>maybe he can't be killed unless you gib him (xdeath)

Not all of these at once, obviously, but there's some simple things you can do to make a monster a different kind of challenge. Having a decent chunk of health doesn't have to be a bad thing, but don't give a monster too much health, and don't rely on just his health value and damage value to make him dangerous.
Also I strongly recommend against using the +STEALTH flag, because it's difficult to make this kind of monster good and not just fucking annoying.

I never liked the nightmare variants of monsters from the console versions. Felt like a boring way of introducing tougher enemies.
Hell Knights from Doom 2 were fine, because adding in a weaker variant of the Baron allowed for more varied usage in encounters. Barons just simpy flat out had too much HP, likely due to the fact they were meant to be bosses for Doom E1.

The pain elemental can become a real bastard if you let him, but if you can get close enough to touch him you can block his spawns and make him absolutely helpless ("bully them and abort their children").
That said, the meatball is designed as a nuisance monster and sometimes he can really be one, you don't always get the luxury of being able to reach and block him, because he does fly.

I agree with you a bit, and while I'm a Doom 3 apologist, I also recognize its flaws and I think the game approached horror really badly.
The game relies way too much on jumpscares, and about an hour into the game there's been so many that you become used to them and expect them, and they become boring.

Going for a more horror direction wasn't a bad idea, but Doom 3 just didn't do it in a good way, and gameplay suffered for it.

I like the PE too. The largest area of player decision making in Doom is movement, with every enemy requiring a certain kind of movement pattern to deal with. Because you can stop the PE from spawning if you keep close, encounters with one in the mix can force the player to instantly sprint right at it, which is a movement that no other monster calls for and can throw the player into a more dangerous situation than how they would ideally take it. If they can't reach it, then it takes almost immediate target priority because any time wasted is time it can spawn more souls. They're like archviles in that they're a sort of wildcard monster where the player has to rethink an encounter as a whole because of the unique complication they bring - PEs are basically a timer that's added to each fight.

Another thing from a different anon: graphic fidelity should be universal across the board.

High res textures do not look good on low polygon surfaces, same as low-res textures look like smeared shit on high-poly models.
Unless they are highly stylised (some N64 games like dr Slump and MML)

In case of BethFallouts/TES texture mods usually go hand in hand with better models and other graphic overhauls.

Models literally can't look good in an engine designed for 8 rotation sprites, unless the actors themselves are completely rewritten to accomodate the models.

The fact that animators of the models suck cock and can't grasp the concept of weight behind movement, you end up with shit like moonwalking floaty pinkies, skating zombies and all that kind of trash.

You may covere a low effort turd in a glitter of special effects, it will remain a turd anyway.

Everyone acts like playing Blood in DOSBox is so bad but if you configure everything correctly and patch it with all the improvements available exactly like you're supposed to when setting it up it plays perfectly...mouse aiming is fixed and everything. Except the glitch with the saving (can be fixed as well though).

When it's setup correctly (use BuildMFX instead of bMouse it's better) correctly I'd bet most people wouldn't be able to tell if they were playing a "modern" source port or the DOSBox version. Unless they want dynamic lighting, ambient occlusion or other shit in which case they shouldn't be complaining about Fresh Supply being so different.

Anyways, I have few thoughts on the weapons themselves but I did also open up the pk3.
>separate your decorate files because having one big file is awful
>your english is a bit iffy, maybe have a native speaker look over some lines
>you seem to value DPS over rounds/sec in balancing, which isn't the best. More shots = more pain chance rolls. The pistol is arguably better than the slot 4 replacer for this reason
>SSG is so blatantly better than the shotgun it's not even funny

>Also your 6th slot weapon is pretty badly misaligned, making it look like it shoots sideways
>judging purely by the decorate, the BFG is going to be very weak, especially vs cybers/masterminds

I don't think it was four years though, the recharging sword meter automatically giving the sword back for free wasn't added until last year with the big v1.0 update. A4Tech XL-755bk
9 programmable buttons (advertises 10, but 10th is a mode switch)
5 modes with customizable DPI (up to 3000), poll rates (up to 1000hz)and separate sets of scripts for each buttton
The script language can be simple for basic tasks, like repeated;y pressing on several points of the screen in successsion, but can also be quite robust with cycles, "ifs" and some basic math.
Scripts stored on board, so they will work even on a different PC.
Has a good braided cord.
The build quality is on the cheaper side, obviously, but cleaning its insides once or twice a year will make it serve for quite a while. Mine served me for over 6 years already.

There's also X-755bk version (without L in XL) - it has non-braided cord and worse DPI. Slightly cheaper (22$ for X vs 25$ for XL)
